95. Power of WIL

-Vol 4: To The North Pole!-

-The Power Of WIL-

After loading his spoils into the car, Kenshin came around and sat on the front seat again. The journey continued. They don’t have a specific location in mind, so they are moving all over the place.

In the end, after a full uneventful day, they finally decided to stop for the night. In these snowy places, nights were extremely dangerous as the visibility was very low. There was no telling what kind of accident they would run into if they persist in moving at night.

Vera parked the car near a hollowed out cave and decided to spend the night there.

Kenshin did a round checkup around the cave to find out if any monsters were lurking nearby. After giving the green signal to Vera, he finally relaxed. That night they had the bear meat cooked and ate it for dinner. Kenshin never knew that monster meat was edible, he always thought it was for some other purposes. But he had to admit, it tasted excellent.

That night, they decided to take turns to watch over. Vera’s turn was for the first two hours.

“Kenshin, wake up!” it was only one and a half hour before Kenshin was nudged wake by Vera. Groggily waking up, he tried to see the time but was stopped by her.

“Don’t switch-on your watch’s light! We are surrounded!” she spoke in a hushed voice. Hearing this, Kenshin was instantly alerted, with his sleep long forgotten. His right hand moved and grabbed the covered handle of his sword.

Squinting his eyes, he tried to see who was surrounding them. Due to many factors and his high stats, Kenshin had an excellent vision. It was so good that he can even see in the dark. As he scanned the surroundings, big furry dog like creatures greeted him. Their purple-ish eyes were glowing in the dark, giving off a demonic vibe.

Snow Wolves!

They are some of the fearsome creatures in these northern areas. They were not threatening alone but is they came in a pack, your life would end even if you are stronger than them. The most fearsome fact was that these wolves clearly had some form of intelligence and would often choose to retreat when the situation was dire. Then at a later time, they would strike back to take revenge.

It was often circled around in hunter’s circles that if you killed a single snow wolf then you have to kill the whole pack or else you will be endlessly pursued by them. Even those strong hunters didn’t mess with them without reasons.

Why such fearsome creature was finding trouble with them in the middle of the night?

“It might be because of this cave! It seems we are intruding on someone’s home!” Vera whispered. Although she was whispering, Kenshin didn’t find a trace of fear in her voice, its as if she wasn’t afraid of them.

In actuality, she didn’t fear them. If it were her alone, she would just have to release some of her aura to make them retreat in fear. But she wanted to see what Kenshin would do in this situation. From the starting till now, she was testing him bit by bit, in different cases, they faced so far. She had a haunch that Kenshin wasn’t just another hunter but one of those ‘blessed’ ones.

She met one of those ‘blessed’ ones and the aura she felt was not something she could describe. From her close observations, this Kenshin also had that aura but in a very repressed manner, as if it didn’t belong to him.

From childhood, Vera had a special talent to distinguish people’s worth according to their aura. Later it evolved into a skill that allowed her to read other’s aura and deduce their capabilities. By using it, she had scouted many talented hunters in her country, increasing the DCB’s power as a whole. For this reason, she had a very distinguishable status in DCB association.

And with that skill, she could see that this Kenshin wasn’t just a typical hunter. He was different. Even different than those ‘blessed’ ones. This was why she had purposefully selected him to be with her. There was also another reason; when she pressured everyone in the room back in the camp, it was only from Kenshin that she felt a little resistance. It was minuscule, but it was able to stop some of the percentages of her pressure.

It made her exceedingly astonish. One has to know that, this pressure wasn’t physical but psychological. A mental attack! It can’t be stopped by any reasonable means, even if you have a holy shield. Only someone whose WIL align towards ‘Shield’ or some specialized skill could counter it. If Kenshin has any one of the two, then it was worth nurturing him.

If Magicians were the cream of the crop, treated like royalty by everyone, then people with the above two skills were the pure golds. Magic could be countered or evaded, but psychological attacks neither be blocked or avoided. They could kill even the strongest of the monsters with just a thought.

She was one of those ‘chosen’ people who held this ability. Now that she found another one with the potential to learn such knowledge, how could she leave it?

Although, DCB and Guilds were all competitors and have their own view. But they all fight for a single goal. In the time of need, they always band together to fight. That’s why there was never an all-out war between Guilds and DCB. The appearance of a strong hunter or skilled hunter was always a good thing no matter where they appear.

“What will you do?” she asked while discreetly observing his facial expression.

Unknown to her intention, Kenshin was analyzing everything in his own way. He was comparing everything with what he could see and what he couldn’t with the map. At the same time, he was trying to come up with the optimal solution to get out of this situation.

He came up with only one way, to fight head on.

It was not because he was dumb. He merely lacked experience in this matter. Until now, he was limited to Mito only, that too to a level 2 dungeon containing low levelled zombies and other spectres. He had never honestly encountered intelligent species, that’s why he didn’t know the optimal way to deal with them.

In the end, he only came up with one solution, to face them head on and kill as much as you can. Hopefully, they would be afraid of persisting after seeing the brutal kills.
