54. The morning after the Night

-Vol 3: Enemies in The dark-

-The morning after the Night-

With the morning came a new day.

The hunters and the military were fighting all night non-stop and were dead tired. Last night was a test of their endurance and strength. Each one of the hunters was outnumbered by 100 to one. It was only because of the military's support that they were able to limit the advance of the undead with few casualties.

When the morning came, many of the monsters instinctively returned to the dungeon. As for them who couldn’t, they were burned to ashes by the sunlight.

With the death of the monsters, the hunters no longer had anything stopping them from sitting down. They were so tired that they didn’t even celebrate their victory. It had to wait before they had rested enough.

If one had to look from the bird's view, they would see just how much destruction caused by those monsters.

Right now, many news channel reporters and journalist were surrounding the cordoned area while relaying the news to the audience.

“Good morning! I am XXX from Xyz Channel. Right now, you are seeing the aftermath of the legendary Dungeon Break…”

“This is the place where the legendary ‘Dungeon Break’ occurred last night. The hunters and the military had to fight side by side and managed to barely avoid the tragedy…”

“From our representative here, we came to know that; more than 1000 people, hunters and soldiers alike died last night.”

Thousands of people all around the world watching it right now. They can see the amount of destruction caused to the Mito from a low-level dungeon break. A cold chill spread throughout their bodies when they thought about the dungeons in their own cities. Once again, the people of the world remembered the horror that had happened more than twenty years ago. Although compared to that, what happened to Mito was nothing much.

After seeing the tragedy in Mito, everyone began thinking this; are we the next!?

Throughout the night, the various leaders of the Mito, as well as the province it belonged to, pulled an all night, intently watching and enquiring about the regular updates about the situation of the dungeon.

They were worried that the DCB and Military would fail, and Mito would plunge into chaos. If that happens, then not only many people would die, but also it will open a gateway for the guilds to stick their noses where it doesn’t belong.

The government could no longer afford to lose any more cities to these guilds.

In a very luxurious room, there was a group of balding and white-haired old men wearing suits, sitting around a circular table with a TV in the middle. This TV was connected to the Mito’s DCB and Military unit, giving them the live updates of what’s happening.

They were listening to the updates and knew just how dangerous it was in front of the dungeon through live camera feeds. These old men’s statuses are not ordinary. One can also say that they represent the top brass of Mito.

They all had waited throughout the night watching the scene in front of Mito. It was not until the morning that they relaxed.

“This time, we barely managed to avoid the crisis,” a white-haired old man with gold-rimmed glasses said while wiping away his sweat. Even though the AC was on, they were sweating like pigs. He was the governor of the Ibaraki Prefecture, the place whose capital was Mito.

“Thank god, the military and DCB managed to control it” the one who spoke these was a bald man with a thick mustache. He was the mayor of Mito, who would usually in charge of the affairs of everything inside Mito.

He was also the first one to who Suguro had informed of the tragedy.

“Hmph! These monsters still caused this much damage. They really are incompetent!” another person with few hairs and a frog-like a face said while snorting. He was the one who was the most afraid of Dungeon Break. Throughout the night, he had many times attempted to run away. But every time it was foiled by the others around him.

“We should celebrate the fact that the monsters only caused property damage. They can be remade. What if they killed thousands of people? Can you guess how much of a tragedy that would be?” another old man with all his hairs intact said while looking contemptuously at the man who had spoken earlier. This person was the head of the Police department of Mito.

Just when a commotion was about to rise; the door was pushed open by a beautiful lady wearing an office outfit.

“Who!? You! How dare you come inside while we are having an important discussion?” an old man raged at the impudence of the young lady.

Hearing this, the lady bowed furiously.

“I am sorry, sir. But this is an emergency. Sir Prime minister is on the line and he wants to talk with sir governor directly” the lady shouted out her reasons while bowing apologetically.

“What? The prime minister? Quick, give me the phone” the governor jumped from his chair and ran towards the young lady.

“Yes, at once sir” the lady agreed and handed him the phone.

Holding the phone, the governor ran out of the room towards the bathroom. After his departure, a heavy silence formed on the room. Feeling awkward, the young lady quietly excused herself. She was very afraid of this old men as a single word from them could probably ruin her career as well as her life. She didn’t even dare to breathe a little loudly in their presence.

A few minutes later, the governor returned. Compared to earlier, his face was a mix between happiness and gloom. Whatever he spoke with the prime minister, it was probably a mixture of both good and bad.

“What did Lord Prime Minister say?” an old man asked.

The governor didn’t reply for a time before sighing. He sat down in the chair and placed the phone on the table. Then crossing his fingers, he absentmindedly played with them. Then he started to speak;

“He was asking about our side of things. After knowing the extent of damage, he was willing to provide with some help. But, he was sending a representative of his choice to this place to keep an eye on all the matters here. Up to this nothing was to worry about but the problem was the representative itself. He had decided to send her”

The governor’s words were as heavy as rocks, pressing down firmly on everyone present there.

“Her! Don’t tell me, it was that witch?” an old man fearfully asked.

“It’s precisely her!” the governor nodded and agreed.

“Shit!!” all the old men cursed at the same time. Looks like their bad days are starting very soon.
