Ep. 687 The Sacred Spring Part 6

When I manage to identify the enchantments I end up really confused. The ring is somehow enchanted as a weapon, but I don't see how that is possible. So I put the ring on and play around with it for a while before finally figuring it out.

When wearing the ring if I shake my hand a certain way it morphs into a dagger. In its ring form it is completely undetectable as a weapon, making it a perfect assassin tool. While I might not be an assassin, I can easily think of situations where it would be useful, so I decide to keep it.

Brightfire says "What's that?"

"Just a new toy. Are you ready to go?"

Brightfire says "What are we going to do with the body?"

"My pouch is almost full at the moment. I was only expecting to find a spring, not a big beast. I will have to come back for it."

Brightfire says "Alright, because I would love some armor made from it! So, how are we leaving?"

"Once I take some water, we will fly out."

Brightfire says "Okay!"

With Brightfire watching, I take four empty casks out of my pouch and fill them with water. Once I have put them back into my pouch I shapeshift into the giant eagle. Brightfire jumps on my back and I take off, then I spiral upwards to get outside.

The grotto is deep in the mountain and it takes several minutes of spiraling to exit the mountain. Once I am in open air I turn east and start flying towards the elven area. It is a cloudy day but we are flying above the clouds currently, that's how tall the mountain was.

A lot of the mountains pierce the clouds so I am fairly confident of being able to find my way back. However, Brightfire complains of having trouble breathing so I drop down beneath the clouds. There is a slight drizzle of ice cold water, my feathers protect me, but Brightfire is miserable.

Brightfire says "Can we please land and camp until the weather passes? Otherwise I am going to freeze to death!"

Turning my head to look at her I find her skin is turning blue, so I look for a place to land. Since neither one of us brought a tent, that means I need to find a cave, she needs shelter. Luckily, with an eagle's eyesight I find a cave fairly quickly and fly towards it.

As I land right outside the cave and drop shapeshift I catch Brightfire in my arms. She is unconscious, which is a bad sign, so I hold her to my chest and rush into the cave. Luckily, the cave is small and uninhabited, so I put Brightfire down and wrap her with my hammock.

Then I rush outside, grab the nearest tree, and rip it out of the ground. I carry it back into the cave and easily break it apart to make a large fire. Just a little bit of mana dries it out and lights the wood, soon the temperature of the cave is rising quickly.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Once the fire is going strong I drag Brightfire close to it and start rubbing her limbs to warm them up. At the same time I throw a healing spell at her, hoping to undo any damage caused by the cold. As soon as she shows signs of waking up I pull a bowl of hot soup out of my pouch and feed it to her.

Between the warmth of the fire and the soup she soon wakes up fully. However, she is still groggy and shivering, so I force her to drink another bowl of soup. After that the fire in her eyes returns and I feel I can stop worrying about her.

Brightfire says "Thank you! It would have been stupid for me to die from the cold!"

"True. Sorry about that."

Brightfire says "It's fine! If I was dressed for the cold it wouldn't have been a problem!"

"Next time we go on a quest you should probably bring some!"

Brightfire says "Is there going to be a next time?"

"More than likely! Even once we leave the island I don't plan to just sit on the ship all the time."

Brightfire says "Great! Next time I will be properly prepared!"

"Sounds good. For now, get some rest. We will head out in the morning."

Brightfire says "Okay!"

Brightfire curls up by the fire, using my hammock as a blanket, and quickly falls asleep. Instead of trying to sleep I go into my meditation to recover my power and mana. While I didn't get hit during that fight, I basically used up every type of power I have.

Although, I will admit that the fight was fun, it was almost like I was a mage. The only bad point was how quickly I ran out of power, but the wyvern had a lot of health. It would have gone better if I had more variety of spells, or more powerful spells.

If I can continue finding ways to increase my mana pool then I will be able to improve my spells. Then I can play around with adding sacred power into the mix and see what happens. Of course, I should probably wait until the goddesses aren't paying attention before I do that.

After all, I don't need another lecture about how dangerous my experiments are. Once my powers are fully restored I exit my meditation and put some more wood on the fire. Brightfire is still fast asleep and it is still a few hours before dawn so I curl up to take a nap.

When I wake up the sun is up and the rain has stopped, but Brightfire is still asleep. The fire has died down and the cave is fairly cold, so I add the last of the wood and get it going again. Once the cave warms up a bit I try to wake up the sleeping Brightfire.

Brightfire mumbles "Five more minutes!"

"Okay, then no breakfast for you!"

Brightfire says "Breakfast? I'm awake!"

Laughing I start taking dishes out of my pouch and share them with her. Once we are done eating I clean everything up and head outside, it is still cloudy but not raining. I shapeshift into the giant eagle and take off as soon as Brightfire is on my back.

As I head east I stay below the clouds, I don't want a repeat of last time. The sun is shining down through some breaks in the cloud cover and it creates some very pretty views. However, they don't distract me enough to miss the sudden attack that comes at me.

The attack comes from above, it is a flying beast that was apparently hiding in the clouds. When I get a look at it, it looks like a flying lizard, kind of like a pterodactyl. With a quick warning for Brightfire to hold on I snap a roll to dodge the diving beast.

The pterodactyl gives up after it misses, but it has friends and they launch their own attacks. Brightfire screams each time I maneuver to avoid an attack, she doesn't seem to be enjoying this. However, I am not about to let us get hit just because she is scared of fancy flying.
