Ep. 409 Captain's War Part 19

Since I already killed all of the death knights I am not expecting anything to happen. However, to my surprise something is summoned, but it doesn't look anything like the other death knights. It is at least eight feet tall, a little taller than I am, and it is big and bulky with light blue skin.

As it appears everything around it freezes over, including the zombies. The only things that don't freeze are the summoner and me, thanks to the items Raindrop made me. Based on that I guess this must be the emperor of ice from the legends.

He is not wearing any armor but he is wielding a two handed axe that looks like it is carved from ice. His eyes glow with an intense blue light that illuminates the area around him. He gives off a completely different feeling than the other death knights did.

My first thought is to ignore him and go for the leader but I quickly decide that would be a mistake. The feeling I am getting is that if I turn my back on this thing I will die. So I think my best bet is going to be to defeat it before the leader can run too far.

Since it is a death knight I know I am going to have to destroy its head to kill it. That is going to be difficult to do quickly without getting hit by the axe. What's worse is the death knight is intelligent enough to know its own weak spot and will protect it.

??? yells "Kill him!!"

With that as the death knight growls and advances the leader turns and limps away from me. It looks like he injured his leg when the bat came crashing down. As I watch him limping away I have another idea, will the death knight survive the leader's death?

As the death knight approaches me I draw the chief's sword, the ice sword probably won't hurt this guy. When he raises his axe to attack I make a feint at his head then drop and spin to the side. As I spin past him I cut into the back of his knee, hoping to slow him down.

Once past the death knight I charge after the leader, he hasn't gotten very far. He hears me coming and turns to face me, but I don't slow down. He starts to open his mouth, probably to cast a spell, as my sword moves across his neck.

As his head goes flying I realize he was only in his late twenties at most. Turns out I was right, he was a human, and basically a kid at that. As soon as he is dead the zombies near me all turn to attack me.

Despite my expectations the test doesn't end, and a glance back shows the death knight is up and coming after me. So much for everything being over once I killed the leader, nothing is ever easy. At least the uncontrolled zombies will be easier for the defenders to handle.

This just leaves me in the middle of a zombie horde with an angry death knight coming after me. The only good thing is as the death knight comes closer the nearby zombies get frozen. As he charges at me I notice the wound on his leg is completely healed.

I wait until he swings before I step aside and take a swing at his head. Unfortunately, he ducks my swing and counters with another swing of the axe. He is fast for his size and from how fast he moves the axe I am guessing he is at least as strong as I am.

When I step back to avoid the axe I get to watch as it hits a couple of zombies. Watching them shatter into tiny pieces I am even more convinced that I don't want to get hit. The death knight is strong, fast, and skilled, I can't see any openings to exploit.

The worst part is since he is undead I can't just wait for him to get tired. In fact if I don't do something soon I am going to be the one who gets tired and ends up dead. Well, I won't actually die, but failing the test when I am so close to finishing it would feel about the same.

Since I can't see any way to win the fight normally I decide to try something foolish. The next time the death knight swings his axe I swing my sword to meet it. When our weapons collide there is an explosion of sound and all the frozen zombies shatter.

Both my sword and his axe have cracks in them after the collision. He doesn't hesitate and swings again, so I do the same, aiming for the cracks in the axe. With a massive explosion that throws me back a dozen feet both weapons are destroyed.

The explosion throws me into some unfrozen zombies and I am forced to punch my way free. In the process I get bitten a few times but I ignore them as I look around for the death knight. He was also thrown back by the explosion but he is already up and charging at me.

As he closes in the zombies freeze and I am able to free myself from them just in time to get punched. The punch forces me to stagger back since I didn't have good footing. I quickly set my stance and when the second punch hits me I am able to retaliate.

For the first time, I punch something full strength and it doesn't fall down. If anything the death knight's return punch is even stronger and I have never been hit so hard. However, I am not about to lose at this point, every time he hits me I hit him back as hard as I can.

As we trade dozens of punches back and forth I can't help thinking this fight must look epic. Unfortunately, the only witnesses are the zombies that aren't frozen solid. After dozens more punches fly back and forth I start to notice something.

Thanks to my regen and fortitude the death knight's punches, while painful, aren't really affecting me. On the other hand the death knight is starting to show signs of the damage adding up. So far he has been able to avoid any damage to his head, but his body is showing damage.

With that as encouragement I start aiming my punches better, hitting the same spots over and over. Finally, with a loud crack, his left shoulder caves in under my punches and his arm goes limp. Now he is only punching me once for every two hits I get in and he has a lot more trouble protecting his head.

After I get a few hits in on his head I notice his punches getting sloppy. Sensing that this crazy slugfest is almost over I push myself to hit him harder and faster. After hitting him in the head about twenty times I am finally rewarded with the sound of his skull shattering.

The next few punches that manage to hit his head result in more cracking sounds. The shape of his head has shifted and when my next punch lands one side of his head caves in. As the light fades from his eyes and his body collapses I drop to my knees panting.

??? says "Test Completed!"

Everything around me fades to white, which is a relief since I was still surrounded by zombies. I am fairly confident that even without me the town should be able to survive. I do kind of regret not being able to say goodbye to everyone, but I remind myself they aren't real.

??? says "Calculating Score! Please wait...."
