This makes me think that these ghosts aren't normal, at least as far as I understand ghosts. Normal ghosts should be created by someone dying with unresolved issues. Those kinds of ghosts should be unwilling to pass on until their issues are resolved.
At least that is what various anime and manga have taught me, but maybe it isn't true. Although, what Krenocia has said about ghosts would seem to agree with it. There is no way everyone on these ships had unresolved issues, which is why I think they are strange.
Also, the number of wrecks in the area is suspicious, especially since there shouldn't be a lot of traffic here. It makes me curious if there might be something special about this area. Maybe this area is cursed somehow, that might explain the high number of ghosts.
That is actually what I am hoping for, because a curse should be something Albion could deal with. At least, I think that a curse should count as a type of corruption that he can purify. There is no use worrying about that until I find out if this area is actually cursed.
It could be something else, or it could be nothing at all, just a big coincidence. Besides, there is a chance that I won't even be able to find out what is going on. I don't have all that much time that I can spend here, so it will depend on luck.
I do a quick scan through the wreck, picking up some gold and some other metals. Once that is done, I leave the wreck and swim towards the next one. I use my mana scanning and detection as I go, looking for any hints about the area.
I have no idea what kind of energy a curse would give off, but I am not sensing anything unusual. When I reach the next shipwreck I repeat the same process, only stopping when I need to pray. This wreck doesn't seem as old as the others, yet the ghosts all accept redemption.
However, with it being a newer wreck, there are more materials for me to take. There are even some chests that haven't rotted away yet and they are full of materials. Not that I really need more materials right now, but there is no point in leaving them here to rot.
As soon as I am done looting, I leave and swim towards the next wreck. I thought that this was going to be the last wreck, but before I reach it I detect another two wrecks. That just makes this area even more suspicious and means this will take longer than I thought.
I arrive at the next wreck and start clearing out the ghosts using redemption. I notice that one of the ghosts is much brighter than the others, it is probably stronger. I use redemption on it, expecting it to refuse, but it accepts like all the others.
To be honest, I am slightly disappointed, I wanted to try fighting against a ghost. However, I am not going to try fighting unless I find a ghost who refuses the redemption. I don't want to take away someone's chance to go to the afterlife since I don't know what happens to a defeated ghost.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
For all I know, defeating the ghosts might destroy their souls and I don't want that. I still haven't found one that refuses the offer even after clearing the whole wreck. I do a quick loot job and then head for the next one, praying for a refill as I go.
"Krenocia, you said you were talking to the souls of the ghosts, right? Have they said anything to give any hints about this area?"
Krenocia says "No. All of the ships that you have cleared so far were sunk by demonic beasts. Nothing unusual about that."
"Could the demonic beasts be the reason all the crews turned into ghosts?"
Krenocia says "Doubtful. If the ships had all been sunk by the same group of beasts, then maybe, but they weren't. One type of demonic beast having that kind of power is possible, but multiple types having it is practically impossible."
"Alright. Then there must be something else going on. Oh, by the way, what happens to the soul of a ghost that is defeated?"
Krenocia says "It is destroyed."
"Alright. Let me know if any of the ghosts I redeem say anything interesting please."
Krenocia says "Sure thing."
By the time I am done talking to Krenocia I have arrived at the next shipwreck. I start casting redemption on the ghosts, but I also keep scanning with mana. This whole situation is starting to drive my curiosity crazy, I need to figure out the mystery.
This time I am trying to watch for any kind of reaction as the ghosts are redeemed. If there is something causing this, maybe it will react to the ghosts somehow. At first, I don't notice anything, but after about twenty ghosts I do see something.
When the ghost is redeemed there is the tiniest fluctuation in the surrounding mana. It happens every time that a ghost is redeemed, but even though I was looking I almost missed it. It makes me feel like I need some kind of microscope for looking at the mana.
Unfortunately, I don't currently have any ideas on how I could make something to work like that. So instead, I quickly redeem a couple of more ghosts so I can study the fluctuation. Now that I know what I am looking for it is a bit easier to spot it when it happens.
The first thing I notice is that the fluctuation only occurs on one side of the ghost. At first I think it is random, but after redeeming a few more ghosts I notice something. It isn't random, the fluctuation always occurs pointing in a specific direction.
As I redeem the rest of the ghosts on the wreck I am able to determine that they are pointing north-east. The two additional wrecks I detected are in the same general direction. Since I was planning on going to them anyway, I can continue to investigate.
I quickly loot the wreck and then move on, continuing to scan for fluctuations as I go. It is a long shot, but there has to be something out here that is reacting to the ghosts. If I am lucky, the fluctuations should be pointing towards whatever is affecting the ghosts.
I quickly swim to the next wreck, redeem a ghost, and look for the fluctuation. Not only is it there, but it is pointing more towards the north than the east. Now, if only I had a map I could plot the directions and get a general idea of the location.
Unfortunately, paper is pretty quick to degrade underwater and I haven't found any maps or charts. Without that, I am going to have to try and plot it out in my mind. I won't be able to get a precise location, but I should be able to get pretty close.
