Since opening a gate in mid-air might be dangerous I fly down and land. Then I sit there and watch as the storm slowly runs out of energy and breaks down. I have always loved watching a thunderstorm, so the wait for it to end is quite pleasant.

'Oh, as soon as the spell ended I got the exp! And so much exp! I never imagined so many beasts dying. There weren't that many here, just how big of an area did the spell cover?'

Instead of gating back to the ship, I take off and start flying deeper into the demon lands. I want to see just how far the spell went and satisfy my curiosity before I go back. I am just glad that the spell didn't expand back over the city, that would have been a disaster.

In the future, I am going to have to be more careful about using unknown energy sources. Not that I had much of a choice at the time, but I will try to avoid it happening again. Although, considering how many beasts it killed, it was definitely effective.

After flying for a few minutes I finally spot the end of the blasted area. It is several miles from where the wall used to be, a lot further than I was expecting. A few miles might not be much for a normal storm, but for a spell it is a huge area.

Now I understand how the spell killed so many demonic beasts and my curiosity is satisfied. So, I land, open up a gate, and walk through into my cabin on the ship. As soon as I step through, Lin tackles me and hugs me tightly, I guess she still worried.

As soon as Lin releases me, the kids want their turn, so I give them some attention. It takes me a few minutes to calm them down and convince them that I am fine. Once I do that we move to the table and sit down to have dinner together.

Lin says "Alright, now how did dealing with the wall lead to what happened?"

I knew that this was coming, so I start explaining what happened while I eat. There are several times during my story that Lin looks like she is going to hit me. Luckily, she decides not to and just lets me finish the story before she says anything.

Lin says "So, it sounds like the fire god can be counted as an enemy now?"

"I don't know if I would go as far as to call him an enemy. He probably just wants to beat me up for a while."

Lin says "I can certainly understand that feeling! Do you think he will come after you?"

"I doubt it, he won't be able to find me unless I take my cloak off."

Lin says "You are really lucky that it wasn't destroyed along with your armor and clothes."

"Yes, I am. Speaking of, I really need to make some new clothes."

Lin says "Didn't you already make some?"

"No. What I am wearing now is made with my shapeshifting ability."

Lin says "What are you going to do about your armor?"

"For now, nothing. I don't really need it anymore. Besides, I got some ideas from the fire god's spell armor. At some point I will probably experiment with it and see how it goes."

Lin says "There are a number of different spells that create armor. Would you like me to pull the books on them for you?"

"Sure. I won't need them right away, but I will eventually read them."

Lin says "Oh, what was the gem? I hope it was something good considering the risks you took."

"I have no idea. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, I was busy running away from the fire god."

It is lucky that Lin asked, otherwise I probably would have forgotten about the gem. Now that she has mentioned it, I take it out of my pouch to take a look at it. However, the instant I do, Mulan looks at it, jumps onto the table, runs over, and snatches it out of my hand.

Before I can even get over my surprise and try to get it back, she swallows the gem. Instantly, flames erupt from every inch of her body and everyone else quickly backs away. The only ones who don't react are me and Mushu since we have nothing to fear.

The flames flare up and then curl back and re-enter her body, which starts to grow. At first I am worried about her, but it doesn't look like it is hurting her. In fact, the way she is growing probably means the gem is good for her.

Lin says "What's going on? Is she going to be okay?"

"I think so. It looks like she is using the energy of the gem to evolve."

Mulan has only grown a little since she hatched, before this she was the size of a large chicken. She has already doubled in size and she isn't showing any signs of stopping. It looks like she is going to continue growing until the gem runs out of power.

Considering that it looked like it was a fragment of the fire gem, that could take a while. However, since she is currently standing on top of the table, we can't exactly continue dinner. All we can really do is wait and watch until whatever is going on finishes.

Lin says "Just how big is she going to get?"

"I have no idea. I've never seen a phoenix other than her, so I don't know how big they can get. Do you?"

Lin says "All I've read are legends, but according to them she could get really big."

"How big is really big?"

Lin says "Um, the size of a dragon? Several legends put the phoenix on the same level as a dragon."

"If she gets that big, it could be a problem. Luckily, it was only a small piece of the gem. It should run out of energy soon. I hope."

Mulan has not stopped growing while we were talking and is now bigger than the table. The food that was on the table is now nothing but ashes and the table itself has started burning. Luckily, the cabin is highly enchanted against fire, otherwise we could be in trouble.

The fact that the table is burning just shows how intense the flames around Mulan are. As I am watching, I notice that Mushu is absorbing some of the flames from the aura around Mulan. Unlike Mulan, it isn't causing him to grow, but it is probably benefiting him somehow.

The flames around Mulan still aren't dying down, the gem has more energy than I thought. At this point, Mulan's wingspan is already over ten feet, she is big enough to carry a human. She is still growing, but I can tell that the rate of growth is starting to slow down.
