I have plenty of imagination and am not afraid of hard work. I have already thought of several ways to make the spell work. Now I just need to test them out and see which one will work the best. Of course, since I am in a library I keep my experiments really small.
When that proves to not be enough I close my eyes and open up a soulscape. Then I test out everything on a large scale, but I can't trust the results because it is a soulscape. However, it does give me a little information that I can use in the real world.
Two of the methods that I thought up don't even work in the soulscape. That means that they were bad ideas and I won't waste any more time on them. That still leaves me with three more methods that might still work out.
So, after ending the soulscape I work on creating a spell around each method. During the process of creating the spells I figure out a few things, so I trash them and start over. The original spell isn't of much help to me, it is extremely simple compared to what I am trying to create.
The three spells I am creating are not very similar to each other, even though they have the same goal. It is more like coming at a specific point from three different directions. I think that all three actually have a chance at working, I just need to see which will work the best.
Once the three spells are complete I go back over them to look for any mistakes. I do find a few and once they are corrected I ask Lin to look over them. Only after she has approved them do I plan to test them out to see if they work.
Lin says "Three spells created from scratch, you are getting good at this."
"It's all thanks to you. I couldn't have done this without everything you have taught me."
Lin says "Maybe, but this is still impressive. Your creativity is far from normal. I don't see anything wrong with the spells. What's next?"
"We will go back to the suite so that I can test them out. Then we will have lunch before coming back here. These spells are just to test the ideas, I still plan to create another spell based on what I learn."
Lin agrees and we return to the suite so I can test out the new spells with her help. I need her help because I need someone to cast the detection spell on me. If the new spells get canceled by the detection spell then they are pointless.
I return to my normal form and then use the first of the new spells to shapeshift into a human. Then I give Lin a nod and she casts the detection spell that I made for us to use. The reason for using that one is that it is the better spell and it is a better test.

Unfortunately, the detection spell breaks the shapeshift and forces me back into my normal form. On the plus side, I can feel that I can't shapeshift again for a while, meaning the new spell works properly. However, since I create the new spell it is easy enough for me to remove the residue that prevents shapeshifting.
Lin says "Looks like the first one doesn't work. Do you know why?"
"Yes, it is because it doesn't count as natural shapeshifting. That is the hard part and why I created three different spells. I just hope at least one of them works."
Lin says "What are you going to do if none of them work?"
"I will take what I learned from these spells and use it to try a different way. There are other ways to achieve what I want, I am sure of it. In the end, I might end up having to make an item to protect me from the detection spell."
Lin says "Can you do that? Does that mean you can fix the choker so my disguise won't be broken?"
"Yes, I already did that. You were busy reading and didn't notice."
Lin says "When were you planning on telling me?"
"I would have mentioned it at some point."
Lin says "Assuming that you didn't get distracted and forget about it, right?"
"Um, yeah."
Lin laughs and gives me a kiss, then she steps back so that I can try the next spell. This one also works and allows me to shapeshift into human form, but it hurts. The pain isn't that much, but the fact that I can feel it with my pain resistance means it is pretty bad.
That probably means that there is a problem with the spell itself, but I still want to test it. After I give her a nod, Lin casts the detection spell at me again. This time I am not forced back to my original form, but I still feel like something went wrong.
Lin says "You form wavered like a heat haze. It is better than the first one, but I think the spell needs some work."
"Agreed. It also hurt during the shift which isn't supposed to happen. This one is also a failure, but I still learned from it."
Lin says "As long as you learned something then it was worth it. Well, one chance left. Shall we give it a go?"
"Yeah, let's. Um."
Lin says "What's wrong?"
"I can't change back."
Lin says "Is it from the detection spell's residue?"
"No, I already removed the residue."
Lin says "The spell didn't actually change you into a human, did it?"
"No way. The spell isn't powerful enough to do that. Even if it is possible, I wouldn't be strong enough to cast a spell like that."
Lin says "If it was possible, would you want to be a human again?"
"No, not really. I like the way I am now and I doubt I could get this powerful as a human."
Lin says "It is good that you are happy with who you are, but what are we going to do if you are stuck like this?"
"Give me a minute, let me see if I can figure it out."
Lin stops talking and waits patiently as I scan myself to figure out what went wrong. I quickly figure out that the spell is still in effect, that is why I didn't revert to normal form. It seems that I made a mistake in the spell and that is preventing it from being canceled.
The solution is actually simple once I figure that out, I simply dispel the spell. As soon as I do I return to my normal form, but again the change causes some minor pain. Although, that does mean that I can create a spell with a continuous effect to counter the detection spell.
With some improvements I can probably get rid of the shimmering and the pain. However, that will be a last resort, I want to find the proper way of doing things. With that in mind I cast the last of the new spells and shapeshift into a human.
