Isabella says "That might be part of why she is mad at you. After all you are going to go off alone and do dangerous things again."
"It's probably both!"
Isabella says "It might be, she didn't say anything to me before she left."
"It's alright, I will sort things out with her eventually."
Before the conversation can continue Sarah comes up with a tray full of food for me. Glad of the distraction I take the tray from her and eagerly dig in, instead of leaving she sits down and watches me eat. The food is delicious as always and I don't stop stuffing my face until it is all gone.
Sarah says "It is a good thing you are active, otherwise with the way you eat you'd end up fat."
"No worries there, I won't be sitting around much. Oh, that reminds me, you don't need to ask about the streets. The city owns them and I've already agreed on a price."
Sarah says "Oh, okay. Need anything else?"
"Do you have time to help? You always seem really busy."
Sarah says "Actually, I have to work at it to find things to do. We don't have all that many customers in case you haven't noticed. So if you have something more interesting for me to do I'm interested."
"Well, as it turns out I am going to be a noble and I will need someone to handle things while I am away."
Isabella says "They are making you a noble? Congratulations!"
Sarah says "So, this street and the other two once you buy them will be your lands?"
"Yes, that's correct. And thank you Isabella."
Sarah says "So you need someone to manage the streets and the people while you are out adventuring?"
"That and work with Pol on his merchant enterprise and Vacker with his school."
Sarah says "Sounds more exciting than just running the inn, I'll do it!"
"Are you sure? It isn't going to be too much work?"
Sarah says "I can handle it, I can hire some people to help with the inn. If the noble stuff gets to be too much I can hire help for that too."
"Well, if you want to try it, I am fine with it."
Sarah says "Yes, I want to do it. Running the inn is fun and all, but I want more out of this life I have been summoned into. I want this life to mean something and I can't think of anyone else worth following."
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
"I'm flattered, Sarah, but you know my circumstances right?"
Sarah says "Yes, I'm aware you are going to die after the invasion. Before that you are going to do great things and that's what I want to be a part of."
"As long as you understand, then welcome to the team."
Sarah says "Thanks! So, what's first?"
"First, I need to take a hundred thousand gold to the adventurers guild to pay for Isabella's escort. Then I need to stop by city hall to pick up my noble papers or whatever so I can officially back Pol's merchant enterprise."
Sarah says "So you don't need me for anything yet?"
"No, not yet. Everything is just getting started right now."
As I start counting bags of gold I tell Sarah what plans I am setting in motion. She is going to need to know what is going on if she is going to be in charge when I am out running around. I am going to have to trust her with a lot of things, but I feel like I can trust her.
Once I have the ten bags of gold I need I drop them in my pouch and head out to find the adventurers guild. It turns out to be fairly easy to find, all the guild buildings are in the center of the city around the city building. When I enter the guild is busy, lots of adventurers walking around or sitting and talking.
Receptionist says "Welcome to the adventurer's guild! How can I help you?"
"Ah, I made arrangements with Ambrose for a quest and I am here to make the payment."
Receptionist says "Ah! Very well, please follow me! Right this way!"
The receptionist comes out from behind the counter and leads me through a hall behind the desk and up a flight of stairs. This part of the building is decorated much nicer than the common area, maybe a guest area. She takes me to a room that is fairly lavish with several comfy looking couches.
Receptionist says "The guildmaster is currently out but if you would be kind enough to have a seat and wait a minute I will fetch our second in command."
"Sure, no problem."
After she leaves I sit down on one of the couches to wait, looking around this room seems meant for nobles. They are the only ones I can think of who would like this type of gaudy decoration. My musing is interrupted by the arrival of a very harried woman, she looks like a secretary who hasn't slept in days.
Jezzel says "Hello, Ash. My name is Jezzel and I basically run this mad house."
"Nice to meet you. I'm guessing Ambrose isn't around much and leaves everything to you?"
Jezzel says "Absolutely! It's okay though, I got the quest request from him and have already contacted the team he wanted."
"That is good to hear, I am here with full payment as promised."
Jezzel says "A noble who pays on time, is that even allowed?"
"I am not your typical noble."
Jezzel says "Well, if you ask me, that can only be a good thing."
"I tend to agree. Anyway, here is the payment and sorry for causing you more work."
Jezzel says "The apology isn't necessary but it is appreciated. Nobles also don't apologize, but don't change because of what's expected."
"Oh, I will never be a typical noble. I can guarantee that!"
Jezzel says "That is good to hear! It has been a pleasure assisting you and I look forward to our next meeting."
"Thank you for your help and it was a pleasure meeting you."
As I leave I pay attention to the adventurers, they all seem in good spirits with no signs of tension. That tells me that even though their work is dangerous the guild takes good care of them. That means Ambrose is a good guildmaster and I can trust him with my people.
On my way out I grab some guild applications, I will leave them in our room for the others. I won't make them join the guild but if they want to get stronger it will be a good way. Next I head over to the city building to find out what I need to do to become a noble and fall into a trap made of red tape.
