Ep. 1083 Preparing to Leave Part 5

That means that I won't be able to stop the spell, even if I want to, until the wall is gone. However, this is the only way that I can think of to maybe stop the fire god from being reborn. For all I know the fire god might be friendly, but the other gods won't be.

Most of them will probably hate me for bringing back another god to compete with them. Then again, most of them would already hate me if they knew I was working for the goddesses. It would be for the best if I can get out of here without them finding out about me.

That is probably impossible, they have probably already seen me and what I am doing. There are twelve pillars of light in the city, but there are probably more deities watching. I think if the gem hatches, I will just run away and let the gods sort it out themselves.

In fact, the fire god might just be the perfect distraction to enable me to escape. However, if I can prevent the gem from hatching, that would mean I get to keep the energy. So, I keep stealing energy to feed into my spell and wait to see what happens.

The spell is now growing faster than I can control and it will soon activate. When it does, lightning is going to rain down on everything outside the walls. At this point, I am just trying to give the adventurers time to get out of the area.

Luckily, the beasts are more interested in reaching the wall than killing the adventurers. The clouds now cover the entire sky and lightning is arcing between them. It is getting harder and harder to keep the spell from activating and destroying everything.

More and more demonic beasts are coming into sight, there are thousands of them. If they hadn't retreated, I am sure that all of the adventurers would have died. As it stands, not all of the adventurers are going to make it back to the city.

Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to help them, it is taking all my attention to hold back the spell. The worst part is, the longer I hold it back the worse it will be when it activates. There are only a few feet of the wall left, but I don't think I can hold the spell that long.

The first of the demonic beasts reach the wall and they jump straight into the flames. They are instantly consumed by the flames, but as they die the flames change. The flames take on a demonic aspect and I am no longer able to refine them back into mana.

That is probably the demon's goal, to make the flames go out of control and destroy the city. What worries me is what might happen if the gem absorbs the demonic flames. I certainly don't want to be responsible for the birth of a demonic fire god.

However, in order to deal with the flames I will need to release control of the spell. There are still hundreds of adventurers out there trying to retreat to the city. Those kinds of losses would be a serious blow to the city so I can't bring myself to do it.

Lin says "We have cleared the harbor, but Athena is nervous about the storm that is brewing."

"Tell her not to turn west and just head north. That isn't a storm, it is the spell I am preparing."

Lin says "Don't you think that you are going a bit overboard?! Are those pillars of light what I think they are?"

"I didn't have a choice and yes, they are. Don't worry, I plan to gate out of here before they get here."

Lin says "Alright, I will be waiting. If you get in trouble, call for me and I will come help you escape."

I tell Lin that I love her and then I cut the communication and turn my focus back to the spell. Unfortunately, Lin distracted me just enough that the spell has started slipping out of my control. Despite all of my attempts, I can't stop the spell from slipping further and further.

All that I manage to do is to slow it down for a few minutes before it activates. Not all of the adventurers have made it back yet, but most of them have. A couple of dozen are still in the danger zone, but there is nothing that I can do for them.

As soon as the spell activates, thousands of lightning bolts rain down from the sky. The sound that follows is so loud that I can't hear it, I feel it as it shakes my bones. The next second, thousands more bolts descend and it doesn't stop at that.

Normally, I consider lightning to be beautiful, but right now it just looks like the end of the world. What worries me is that the rate that the spell is absorbing mana is still increasing. At this point I am no longer providing mana to the spell, but it is still growing.

Luckily, this means that there is less for the fire gem to absorb, but it still might not be enough. The light around the gem has started to pulse rhythmically and I am guessing it is a bad sign. Just when I think that things can't get any worse, the light pillars disappear.

I am tempted to just turn and run away, but I don't want to leave until I know what is going to happen to the gem. If I leave before that, I know that my curiosity will drive me insane. Besides, I am also a little worried that the spell will find another source of mana and just keep growing.

If that happens, then it might really be the end of the world and it would be my fault. That shouldn't be possible, but I still can't help worrying about it. Besides, I still have a task that I need to perform and that is taking control of the flames infected with demonic mana.

At this point, there are no more demonic beasts reaching the wall, they are all dying to the lightning. So, I just have to control the demonic flames that are already here and keep them from being absorbed. However, that means that I have to fight against the gem that is trying to absorb everything.

The flames are hard to control, but luckily I have experience dealing with demonic energies. To keep them from being absorbed by the gem, I move them into the spell's path. I figure that letting the spell absorb the demonic energy is safer than the gem absorbing it.

However, just as I am getting things under control, I can sense twelve beings heading my way. From the power I can sense from them, only four of them should be avatars. The other eight feel weaker, so they are probably servants like angels.

It is probably a good thing that I don't have control of the spell, otherwise I would use it to attack them. As it stands, they will be here soon, so I need to decide what to do. I can either run away before they get here, or stick around to see what is going to happen.
