They look to be heavily injured, but they did buy enough time for the new god to get back up. The new god looks enraged as he charges back into the air to attack the fire god. Unfortunately for him, the fire god meets his attack with an attack of his own.
The body of the new god is sent shooting down to the ground where he lands on the avatars. The impact causes a huge crater to form and I can see the two avatars dissipating. They turn into white particles of light and start drifting towards the sky.
Before the new god can recover, the fire god swings his ax and sends out a wave of flames. However, it is not aimed at the new god, it is aimed at the remaining avatars and the angels. It turns out that the two avatars are not strong enough to stop the wave on their own.
The two avatars only suffer severe burns from the flames, but the angels are not so lucky. All eight of them have their wings burned away and go plummeting to the ground. Those that survived the flames don't survive the fall, with that one attack all eight angels die.
When I see that their bodies don't disappear I start thinking of ways to get to them. Even if their gear isn't useful to me now, it is still made from materials I don't have access to. However, I can't be sure how the fire god might feel about me looting his kills.
As a god, he shouldn't really care about the angel's things, but that isn't for sure. It is a gamble and I am willing to take a chance, but not until after I grab the gem. I don't know why, but I really want to see what that gem is and what it does.
However, with that last attack he took another step, if he moves a little more I will go for it. The new god finally gets up and notices that he only has two avatars left as backup. To say that he looks displeased would be a huge understatement to say the least.
Fire God says "Well, are you going to call your friends? If not, I am going to end this boring farce."
New God says "I don't need any help! I am the God of Purity and I will be the one to purify you!"
Fire God says "Idiot, you think you can purify flames?! Fire is what purifies other things! Here, let me show you!"
The fire god creates a ball of flames above his hand, but then the fire starts to change. It cycles through a few different colors and then it turns into a pure white flame. Even to me, that flame feels somewhat dangerous, which is really surprising.
Luckily, it isn't aimed at me and even better, the fire god steps forward as he throws it. Instead of watching what happens to the new god, I dash over, grab the gem, and throw it into my pouch. Then I return to where I was, like nothing happened, and look over to see the results.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
The god of purity is covered by white flames and he is screaming as he burns. After a few seconds, he turns into a beam of white light and escapes into the sky. The two remaining avatars watch him go and then they also return to the heavens.
The fire god watches them go with a snort and then turns to look at where he was standing. He only looks at the spot for a second and then instantly turns his gaze over to me. He has an amused look on his face as he looks at me, but that isn't very reassuring.
Fire God says "First you refuse to become my new body, then you bring me back anyway, and now you have stolen my gem. I am really confused as to what to do with you. I am tempted to punish you, but I would have to get pretty serious to actually hurt you."
"The point to focus on is that I did bring you back. Compared to that, isn't everything else kind of unimportant?"
Fire God says "I suppose so. Besides, you are amusing. Now, I have a world to explore. I imagine a lot has changed since my time."
"Um, before you leave, I have a question. Based on where I found your gem, do you know anything about the Maker?"
Fire God says "The who?!"
I quickly realize that there is no reason for him to recognize the name I made up. So, I describe her, how I found her, the undead she controls, and how her powers work.
Fire God says "That is the Goddess of Undeath. Wait, are you saying that she is free?! That shouldn't be possible! My opposite, the God of Ice, gave up his life to seal her!"
"Um, unfortunately, yes she is free. How she was freed isn't important. Why did you seal her instead of killing her?"
Fire God says "We couldn't find a way to kill her. I personally burned her to ashes a dozen times, she just kept coming back! If she is free, then this world is in trouble. It will take someone with the powers of an ancient god to seal her again."
"You mean someone like you?"
Fire God says "Similar to my power level, yes. The problem is that I never learned how to seal things. I only know how to destroy things."
"Ugh! Alright. I will just have to hope I can get strong enough to deal with her before her powers recover."
Fire God says "What do you mean before her powers recover?"
"Her powers are nowhere near what you described just now. I am guessing that being sealed for thousands of years has weakened her."
Fire God says "Thousands of years? Has it really been that long?"
"I'm afraid so. At least from what I saw of where she was sealed."
Fire God says "Wait, you found my gem and saw where she was sealed. You released her!"
"Uh, nice meeting you! Got to go now! Bye!"
Without giving the fire god time to react, I turn and fly straight into the lightning storm. It isn't as strong as before, but there are still hundreds of strikes happening every second. The fire god chases after me, but I managed to get a few seconds head start.
I don't have any control over the storm, but that doesn't worry me since it can't hurt me. Since we are flying, both the fire god and I attract a lot of lightning strikes. For me it feels really good, but from the sounds of it the fire god doesn't fare so well.
When I look back I quickly notice that the fire god is falling behind, which I didn't expect. I was sure that he would be faster than me, the lightning must be hurting him. He only follows me for about a minute before he gives up and turns back.
I am sad that I couldn't get the angel's corpses, but I am glad I had the storm as cover. I don't think the fire god is mad enough to kill me, but I don't want to take that chance. I am hoping that he will head east and cause problems for the Maker.
