The undead are a little harder to kill than goblins, but they are easier to distract. As soon as Nived and I get close they all turn to focus on us, this takes the pressure off the town. At least on this side of the town, there are thousands of undead surrounding the town.
After about twenty minutes Raindrop comes riding back around to where we are. When I look over at her she shakes her head at me, they didn't find the leader. That means it is smart enough to be hiding somewhere nearby, that makes things more difficult.
For now all I can really do is keep killing the undead as fast as I can and wait for the leader to show itself. Luckily, since the walls are repaired the undead don't have a way into the town. If I hadn't paid for the walls to be fixed then they would have probably been inside the town before we showed up.
In fact this kind of army is almost completely useless against a walled town. Which tells me this was planned based on the walls before they were repaired. That would mean the enemy had information about the town but not the fact that they were recently repaired.
It makes me wonder if the leader isn't around because of the change in the situation. Maybe when it saw the walls it left because it knew the current army would be useless. If that is the case why leave the army here, unless it plans to come back with a way to deal with the walls.
If that is the case then it would make sense to leave the army here to keep the people contained in the town. Just then I have a horrible thought and quickly look around for Raindrop.
"Raindrop, head up the trade road real quick and check for more undead!"
Raindrop says "Sure!"
Nived says "Do you think there are more on the way?"
"Yeah, I think the leader left to get something that could bring down the walls."
Nived says "Okay, what should we do?"
"We need to kill as much of this army as we can before backup arrives."
So the two of us seperate so that we can kill more undead faster, on my side lighting on his fire. I'm sure the people standing on the walls are getting quite the light show. I am kind of disappointed that despite how much I have used it, Lightning Wave still hasn't leveled up.
By my best guess we are a little short of having half the army destroyed when I see Raindrop riding back. She is heading straight for me and she has a worried look on her face, guess I was right. I quickly cut my way free of the undead and head over to meet her.
Raindrop says "You were right! Undead ettins are coming down the trade road!"
"Ugh, this is my fault for not cleaning up the corpses. There should be around two hundred or so?"
Raindrop says "No! Thousands!"
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
"Thousands?! But how? Nevermind, it doesn't matter right now! How long do we have?"
Raindrop says "Well, they are moving slowly so maybe five hours?"
"Okay, help us clean this army up then we will plan for the next one."
Raindrop says "Sure!"
Raindrop starts riding around and picking off the zombies, which makes sense since it is hard to kill a skeleton with an arrow. With her clearing out the zombies all I have to do is smash the skeletons. So I sheath my sword and just use my fists, each punch easily destroys a skeleton.
Since the skeletons can't really hurt me I don't bother dodging and just focus on destroying them as fast as possible. The zombies I am a little more wary of, after all I have no idea if they are like movie zombies. I don't really want to let one bite me to find out, especially since I have no idea if I would be immune or not.
With Raindrop's help I clear my side of the town a lot faster than Nived does his side. So I am working on the back side of town already when he finishes clearing his side. When he is close enough I yell to tell him the situation that is coming so he can save some of his energy.
From what Raindrop says we should have about two hours left when we finally finish off the last of the undead around town. After yelling up to the town's militia to keep the gates closed I head up the trade road with Raindrop and Nived. It doesn't take us long to find a hilltop where we can see the approaching army in the distance.
From how clean the ettin skeletons are I can tell they must have come from the mass grave I saw. The problem is that ettin skeletons will be a lot tougher than normal skeletons. Especially if they won't be destroyed until both of their skulls are broken.
"Any ideas?"
Nived says "Not that will work against these kinds of numbers."
Raindrop says "Only if we can find the thing that created them."
"For something to create this many undead I am not sure I could defeat it."
Nived says "Well, we have to do something. The town's walls won't stop those guys!"
Raindrop says "Maybe we can block them with something?"
"If this was the mountains, we could cause an avalanche, but this road is too open. There isn't even a good bottleneck."
Nived says "So we have to fight them?"
"It looks that way."
Raindrop says "There are too many, even for you!"
"Okay, Raindrop, ride out, find Zimmy, and have her bring the mercs back to defend the town."
Raindrop says "I can do that. What are you going to do?"
"Try to delay these things as long as we can."
Raindrop says "Alright, be careful!"
She rides off right away, Nived and I need to buy at least a few hours to give the mercs a chance to return. As I head down onto the road and walk towards the ettins I take out Rocksplitter and load it. When the first ettin skeleton is in range I take careful aim and fire off a single bolt.
The bolt easily shatters the skull but the skeleton doesn't go down, it just slows down. When the next bolt shatters the second skull the rest of the skeleton collapses. As I reload I take a few steps backwards, Nived stays right by my side.
Nived says "I don't suppose you have another crossbow?"
"Nope. Afraid not."
Nived says "Do you have enough bolts for all of them?"
"Not even close!"
Nived says "What do you want me to do?"
"I don't know. I am making this up as I go."
Nived says "That doesn't sound good."
"That's why I didn't say anything before Raindrop left."
When I fire again, the first bolt shatters the skull of an ettin, but the second bolt shatters the skull of a different ettin. The two ettins that now only have one skull each slow down and force those behind them to slow down as well. I quickly reload and shoot two more ettins to slow them down as well.
