Chapter 99: Brobots: Now and Forever

Chapter 99: Brobots: Now and Forever

Mina's mind rolled through her mental evidence like filing cabinets. At last, an idea like a pistol in her ear. She opened her eyes and smiled, finally knowing a way to get this cagey robot to show his heart.

"Todd..." she said at last. "One final question..."

"Yes?" Matinee asked, his pink heart pulsating above the scale. "I 'ope you will finally show me some sweet merci!"

Mina shook her head. "We can have a 'sweet merci break' afterwards. Right now I'm gonna get right to the heart of the matter."

Todd swallowed loudly like he had just the crust of a stale piece of bread.

"Mantron," Mina asked. "How much do you care about your robot brother, Ladbot?"

For once, Todd glared at Mina without his normal smile. His cold gaze froze her to the core. "Clearly, mademoiselle lawyer, you are not a fan of zee funky mechanical duo...DeFunkt. Eef you knew our musique, you would no 'ow I feel about Christian. And zat eez all I'm saying."

Todd crossed his arms in a grumpy pout. An equally cross expression on his face. His silence was truly deafening.

Suddenly, it was like the darkness wrapped its thick fingers around Mina's pale thin neck, attempting to throttle her. There was a claustrophobic feeling in the void and she could not escape. Indeed, she was more just a casual fan of DeFunkt.

Dancing at the prom to Get Funky was perhaps the highlight of her knowledge. That song was as inescapable that year as Taylor Switch was nowadays. It was their biggest hit and yet, it said nothing about the digital duo other than they A) Liked to get down and B) They liked to get funky.

Mina covered her face, wanting to scream. "I'm in a funk too..." she muttered. "But hardly the funky kind."

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Her phone buzzed loudly in her pocket. She quickly snatched it and held it up. Like a light in the darkness, the caller ID read, Trudy Cumberson, the biggest fan of DeFunkt she knew.

Mina thanked the great dog above for throwing her a lifeline. She picked it up and answered, "Hey Mina..." Trudy asked in her deep but bubbly voice. "They are having a sale on kumquats at the Fresh Rinse produce store and I wanted to know if you wanted some? My mummy says they're good for your eyes!"

"Never mind the fruit with health benefits, Trudy!" Mina screamed. "Please help me!"

"Whuh?" Trudy exclaimed. "What's going on?"

"I'm in a dark place," Mina responded. "Literally! Please can you tell me some other DeFunkt hits?"

"Luckily," Trudy chuckled. "You've come to the right fan! I know every DeFunkt song in alphabetical order. Starting with Always Funky and ending with You're So Funky!"

Mina grimaced. "Are there any songs in their catalog that aren't about funk?!"

"You're asking a tough question, girlfriend," Trudy teased. "But yes. The very last song of their career. A song they did with the tuesday night r&b sensation, The Weekday was called Brobots!"

"Trudy!" Mina exclaimed. "Please. Sing it for me!"

"Mi mi mi mi!" Trudy sang, warming up in her operatic baritone.

Mina's friend then began to croon off-key. "Brobots! Brobots! Brobots before ho-bots! Always and forever!"

Mina cried loudly and thrust her finger at Todd Matinee. "CONNECTION!"

She thanked Trudy for her help and told her she would indeed like a fresh kumquat when she got out of her interdimensional void. Mina walked up to Todd and answered, "Okay Mr. Robot. I have a song for you."

Todd still refused to budge, his face frozen like an androidlike mannequin. Mina raised her fingers and sang the slightly offensive refrain:

"Brobots! Brobots before hobots! Always and forever!"

At first, the French robotman was unwavering, but suddenly, his lips quivered. A big smile spread across his face as glistening tears seeped down his cheeks. "Ladbot...non...Christian...was mi best friend," Todd sobbed loudly. "Even though we were breaking up, I would never forget zee funky merriment we had together. We were truly best robuddies and now zat feeling eez gone forever!"

Mina watched in amazement as his heart dropped onto the scale alongside his brain and miraculously, the scale tipped upwards in favor of his heart and mind.

Todd's colorless aura turned a handsome emerald green. Mina knew now he was telling the truth.
