Chapter 36: The Visor Between Us

Chapter 36: The Visor Between Us

Mina only had a split second to think, for a bullet would be even faster than a knife thrown at her by an irate French chef from New Jersey. She closed her eyes, threw up her hands and screamed at the top of her lungs.

But instead, there was the sound of bullets hitting metal and ricocheting off it. A scream filled the air.

Mina opened her eyes. Once again, Blind Justice stood in front of her, but he wasn't holding anything this time. His blindfold had two bullet holes in it.

She lowered her hands and gasped. "Willy..." she muttered. "Did he just shoot you in the hea..."

Her voice was followed by an Italian swear from the other side of the room.

"Miserable manicotti! I'mma bleeding Ragu!"

Police gathered around Lou Farabutto who now had a bullet hole right through his arm. It didn't seem he had been gravely wounded, but it was enough to incapacitate him. They quickly cuffed him.

Mina stifled a reach at Blind's shoulder and as she did, the blindfold became undone, and slowly fluttered to the ground. The rookie attorney was too stupified to talk, for when the handsome attorney turned around, it was like she was looking at another man.

William "Blind" Justice was sporting a metallic visor where his eyes should have been. It had two dents from where Farabutto had shot him.

"Your eyes..." Mina choked. "What happened to them...?"

A regretful frown spread across the handsome prosecutor's face. "That...Mina...I do not know..."

"You said my first name..." she squeaked awkwardly grasping at her pearls. "What do you mean you don't know..."

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

"I mean, rookie," Blind answered sharply retracting his first name basis. "I don't know who did this to me. But I know one thing..."

"What is it..." Mina nearly cooed, so awestruck by the man's resolve.

"I will not rest until he is prosecuted and rotting in prison. For he nearly cut my promising career as a defense attorney short."

"A defense attorney," Mina said, her jaw hung open. That revelation that he was once a defense attorney shook her more than the metal visor. "You are a defense attor..."

"Was..." the man answered curtly. "But I would never defend a man who'd throw acid in a boy's face. A man like that...deserves the full penality of justice!"

"I get it..." Mina remarked softly.

"Do you?" Blind asked. "For we are on opposing sides, aren't we?"

Mina bit her lips. The cold steel glare of his visor was even more intense than a pair of eyes.

"That doesn't mean we can't be friends or help each other..." Mina answered.

William held his hand to his mouth and scoffed. "The latter....Is what I did. For I realized at the last second that the man behind me was a scoundrel."

"What about the former?" Mina asked with hope in her eyes.

Blind was silent and turned his head away from her. "That is not something I decide on lightly. To befriend a criminal defender would be close to befriending a criminal themselves."

"But..." Mina said, trying to remain firm. "These last three girls weren't criminals and without me, they would be in jail..."

Blind turned around. He pointed his finger right at her. "Three out of a thousand is hardly evidence on your behalf. You'll find rookie, that one day you won't be defending your college gal pals, but men and women who would do what they did to me and feel no remorse. Then come to talk to me about your career choice."

"B-but...but..." Mina sputtered helplessly.

Blind picked up his blindfold and wrapped it around his head. It had more punctures than his head. He tied it perfectly. "Now if you excuse me Hawkins, I plan on dealing rough and harsh justice to the man who nearly assassinated me..."

Mina was trembling, both from Farabutto's failed murder attempt and the course words of Justice.

As he walked away, he raised a hand. "But..." he said, not even looking back. "I hope they find the monster who killed your boyfriend. When they do...he will be on the receiving end of my hammer of judgement"

"T-thanks..." Mina sniffed and she started sobbing. Immediately, Winona ran to her and grabbed her in a hug. But even a big goth hug could not console the turbulence of her emotions.
