A toadlike man wearing an enormous powdered wig and black cape came ambling down the aisle looking like a French aristocrat from a few centuries ago. He wore an enormous nametag reading, Barry Sterling, Barrister for Hire. With a wide amphibious smirk, Barry removed a piece of paper from his cape. "All rise for the respected Judge Divine Justice!"
Everyone in the court room did just that.
Divine gave a mean look from behind her pearly glasses at Mina's client. "We have gathered here today for what will surely be a climatic case in this court room. The spoiled rotten daughter of billionaire Maxine Electra, Victoria, is being sued by the family of her ex boyfriend, Brad Gart for murder in the first degree."
Victoria grimaced as a familiar man sat at the prosecutor's desk. Mina had never seen him before, but she immediately knew who he was and why Victoria loathed him.
He wore a purple sports jersey that barely disguised his beer gut. His dark hairline was receding, but he still had a handsome face and broad shoulders. The jersey depicted an orange cartoon buffalo with hair over its eyes. " Business Park Buffalos" was embroidered on the top along with the number 69. Mina immediately knew that this man was Brad Gart's father and his future after a mediocre career playing college football.
"Brad Gart Senior the First is here to testify, your honor!" Lawvis said, before the ex football player shoved his head and nearly knocked his pompadour off his head.
"Don't call me senior, dweebzilla," Mr. Gart chuckled like a school bully. "I just graduated college!"
"At forty-five?" the judge asked skeptically.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Oh it's been that long?" Mr. Gart remarked leaning back. "Feels like only yesterday I was winning matches and babe's hearts."
Mina rolled her eyes. "It probably took him til forty-five to graduate college...meathead."
The young attorney had dated another sporty guy, but her Chad was a total airheaded sweetheart. She despised athletes like Brad and his father who seemed to take pleasure in feeling superior to others. As she shot a glare at Mr. Gart, the middle aged man flicked finger guns at Mina.
"I just arrived," he remarked. "And I'm already catching the eyes of pretty young things! Whatcha doing after this case, pinky-pie?"
"Order!" the judge thankfully shouted. "I'm almost tempted to throw your whole case out with my lunch because of your demeanor, Mr. Gart. You hardly seem to care that your son was brutally murdered..."
A glint reflected in Mina's eyes. "He hardly seems to care....My lawdy, seems I already got myself a suspect!"
"My apologies..." Mr. Gart said, putting up his big hairy hands. "My shrink says my flirting is just a coping mechanism after my wife left me. Whatever that means."
He whipped at a handkerchief and held it to his face. "I can't believe she and now, my young sport are gone."
He louder blew into the handkerchief. "Also if you're wondering..." he said with a wink. "I'm just blowing my nose. Real men don't cry! I'll leave that to the ladies and sissy boys."
The judge growled. "I'm tempted to throw the book at you. Mr. Gart. A real book, that is, at your head so you shut yo' mouth."
"Yeah whatever, granny," Mr. Gart smirked. "Seems you're not just having a cow, but a whole barnyard of animals!"
"And you...sonny," Divine shouted. "Have never graduated mentally from college!"
The barrister raised his hands to ease the furious justice down. He pointed towards the witnesses podium. "Before Mr. Gart's testimony, Police Chief O'Law is here to run through the autopsy for us."
Rita O'Law approached the stand, her mom bob swaying as she placed both hands upon it. Mina grabbed her notebook and prepared to write down any details she had missed from earlier. The murder seemed pretty seamless, but as Raven had instructed her, there was always a loose stitch in the fabric, one that would tear the whole case open at the seams. She just had to find it.
