Chapter 14: Pre-Trial Jitters

Morning. 8:30 AM. Hall of Lawson, Central Street.

Mina arrived punctually in her best bright pink business suit. She waited in the lobby for the trial to begin. Normally, she'd be dragging her feet, but she was so excited and nervous to be defending one of her favorite celebrities, that it propelled her legs right to the legal building.

Raven had still not arrived, and that, coupled with a triple shot expresso gave her the pre-trial jitters. She tapped her foot anxiously and paced back and forth, attempting to wear a hole in the floor.

The gilded door opened and Star entered with Artie beside her. Clad in a dapper emerald green pants suit with yet another slick, blonde pompadour the celebrity actress looked rather dashing.

"Looking sharp!" Mina said, flicking a finger gun at her.

Star tried to play it off cooly. She rolled her head backwards causing her pompadour to flip to her other side and she gave Mina a relaxed grin. "Thanks babe. Though the woman I really want to impress today is the justice. Tell me? Is she easy to woo over?"

Mina thought back to her time in front of the harsh scowl of Justice Divine Justice. "Er....umm...No...but maybe she's a secret fangirl of Venus Warrior From Mars?!"

"Ziggity Zap!" Star said, thrusting a finger gun forward at Mina. "I hate that catchphrase, but maybe if I play up my celebrity role, it will win the judge over. Maybe I could autograph her gavel..."

Mina shook her head causing her long hair to whisk back and forth. "Just be yourself, Star. The judge looks for good character and since you are a good character on your show, it will no doubt help her see the truth."

"You're amazing babe," Star winked. "If this all works out, I'll take you out to dinner."

"Wowie zowie!" Mina exclaimed. "For real?!"

Star winked again and blew a kiss. "If you're into that sort of thing, of course!"

"Fancy, smancy food yes!" Mina said nodding. "But I'm still figuring out if i want it to be a 'date' date!"

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"Take your time!" Star said as she walked towards the courtroom. "Unlike me, girls like you usually take a while!"

"What's that suppose to mean?" Mina shouted with her hands on her hips. "I'm not that wishy washy!"

"Oh I beg to differ," said a cool voice that made her jump.

Mina turned around and was greeted by the handsomest prosecutor in the building, William "Blind" Justice. His shiny locks of brunette hair hung free except when they were tied back with a blindfold around his head.

A blood red streak crossed Mina's button nose. "I'm...not wishy washy..." she barely managed to mouth in his presence.

"Judging by your body heat around me," he said with an icy demeanor. "I'd say a real date with your client is out of the question!"

"What are you talking about?!" Mina asked. "Body heat?! How exactly do you know that?"

Blind shook his head. "I may be blind, but when you lose one sense, you gain many others...either organically or with a little help from a machine."

Drat rats...Mina thought, her heart racing. Maybe he's some kind of bionic cyborg man. That makes him even cooler!

"But the point I have come here to make..." Blind answered. "Is do not tarry. Go all out with all your evidence because I won't hold back...even on a rookie attorney like you. That is not the way of Justice, which is unyielding and always seeking of the ultimate truth."

"You're so cool when you say such big legal words to me!" Mina said slightly drooling.

"And please don't get your spittle on the floor of my grandmother's courtroom!" Blind snapped as the others started to arrive. "She just waxed the floors and likes them drool proof!"

Mina did not respond, but she sighed. "Even if he's a grandmama's boy," she thought, "he's still so amazing."

The clock chimed and Blind nodded at her. "See you in the court room, Rookie."

As he turned to go, Mina murmured stupidly. "See you in my dreams, hot stuff!"

"I swear," Justice said to himself. "They'll hand out a lawyer's degree to just anyone these days."

Mina felt a hand on her shoulder and it made her jump. "Heya kid!" a familiar voice squawked.

Mina turned around to find Raven dressed in his legendary purple tux. Mina had to admit, between her pink suit and his purple, they made a pretty swell, color coordinated team.

"So just to go over the evidence!" Raven said. "We don't have much. Just the two guns with finger prints and Dirk Lord's diary thats conveniently missing a page."

"Right..." Mina said with a polite head bob. "I'm sure the big jerk who took it probably had something to do with the case! But uh...Rave?"

"Yeah?" her mentor asked like a loud bird.

"Is this really going to mean anything when the prosecutor has a few witnesses who have seen everything including the murder?"

"Well..." Raven said, placing his arms on Mina's shoulders and cocking an eyebrow. "Here's a brand spanking new lesson for you, kiddo: Sometimes there's a fine line between witness and suspect."

As the bell tolled them again. Mina bottled those words in her head. They were the only offense she had!
