Chapter 67: Bronx Rage

"Ey, what's da matta bub?!" D. Vito, Mina's favorite cab driver asked as she gazed forlornly out the window. "You ain't said a word since you got in my cab!"

He turned around, and caused the smell of convenient store beef and cheese to waft through the air. Mina didn't mind the smell. Much like the hairy, round faced, bald man himself, the prosciutto and mozzarella had a very homely flavor that reminded her of an old friend.

But even an old friend couldn't prevent the long face or Raven's loss…or Blind's possibly fatal wound.

She had no words to express how she was feeling. It hurt not telling the friendly old guy who dropped her off at the courthouse every time.

"Ya know, toots," D. Vito said, as another beef and cheese sticks protruded from his mouth like a lit cigar. "Sometimes there's so much going on in your life dat there are no words ta properly express it!"

Mina's downcast eyes looked right up. "Yesh…" she sighed. "Yesh… that's right."

"Of course," D. Vito said. "But in dat case, there is something you can do! Something I learned from ma home…"

"Your home?" Mina asked with curiosity in her eyes.

"Ya, before I relocated, I lived in da one place where you can get dis kind of attitude and moxy: Da place is called Da Bronx."

"Da Bronx?" Mina exclaimed.

Being a Cali girl, she had never wandered into that side of town…or rather, that side of the US.

"I'm sorry," Mina said, looking down again. "I'm unfamiliar with the ways of this mythical land. Can you tell me about it?"

"Well, I can tells ya one thing, bub," D Vito said as he pulled up to a stop light. "When things get too much for people in da Bronx. We make a fist, lift it to the sky and exclaim 'I'M LIVIN HERE!' and we feel betta…"

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

This crude and belligerent method fascinated Mina. "Ooh, can I try it?!" she asked. "I've never heard them use this therapy in Beverly Hills before…"

"Dats because," D. Vito smiled. "You can only learn it between 73rd and 45th!"

"Whoa!" Mina said with her hands to her cheeks. "Those people must be enlightened."

"Not enlightened…" D. Vito responded knowingly. "Just streetwise! Now give it a try since we're here."

Indeed, they had just pulled inside the emergency entrance of Clinically Awesome, the Business Park Hospital and Clinic. Mina looked at the towering building and raised her fist and screamed in her best Bronxian accent, "I'M LIVING HERE!"

Panting happily, Mina felt she had released some of her deepest woes and trauma from the last hour.

"There you go, kid!" D. Vito said. "Now wait til you have a pot belly and a fifty more years! Then you'll look the part!"

"I think I'll pass on the pot belly part!" Mina said, laughing nervously.

"Den lay off the Burger Princess burgers and fries while you still gots a metabolism!"

Mina turned bright red. "Uh, yep sure! Thank you, Mr. Vito!"

"Please," the driver said, putting a hand forward. "Call me Denny D, bub!"

"Thanks, Denny!" Mina said, with a happy nod. She was already feeling a lot better when she stepped out of the car. She shuffled into the waiting room where a cross between elevator music and hospital waiting room samba played. People of all kinds of afflictions either tried to ignore or groove along to the music

She was approached by a blond man in a white doctor's coat. With a stethoscope wrapped around his neck and an enormous smile on his face, he was handsome, but the smile made him look forcibly happy.

"Welcome to Clinically Awesome," he exclaimed, his large teeth gnashing together in a big smile, "Where everything is, indeed, clinically awesome…except for the doctor's bill. I am the super awesome Doctor Dawsom! How many I help you!"

Realizing who this man was, Mina gushed. "Are you Doctor Dawsom from Dawsom's Creek?! Ooh my mom…and I…love that show!"

"None other!" Dawsom grinned. "Except they forced me to get a license so I don't just play one on TV!"

Mina presented her attorney's badge. "I'm here to see William Justice! Is he okay?"

Dr. Dawsom frowned. "I'm afraid things aren't looking awesome for him. His outlook is rather dark, in fact…"

Mina let out a loud cry and tears poured down her cheeks.

Even if I've been busy 'livin' here,' she thought, Blind was busy 'dyin here!'
