Chapter 29: O'Law's Gambit

Winona continued to stick pins in her makeshift voodoo doll, but in a burst of annoyance, Mina seized the doll and chucked it.

"If the justice sees you with that doll, she's gonna think you're guilty from the start!"

"Excuse me, Miss Hawkins" a bold female voice exclaimed. "Watch where you're hurling potential murder weapons!"

Mina turned around. The voice came from Chief Rita O'Law, dressed in her dark blue detective overcoat and matching pants. Her face was strong, but both her shiny, shoulder length hairdo and made up face softened it a little to mom-cop-chic. She tossed the voodoo doll up and down. "You could really put an eye out with this spiny doll!"

"That's the point," Winona muttered, but Mina kicked her with her heel.

"Why are you here, chief?" Mina asked. "You do know that Raven is out of town if you wish to intimidate him."

O'Law raised her penciled eyebrows. "Maybe that's the reason he's outta town anyway. I scare him. But that's not the reason I'm here."

"Why are you?" Mina asked.

"Oh," O'Law said, confidently crossing her arms, "a little birdie told me that you know something about this kidnapping."

"Winona?!" Mina exclaimed. "Did you tell the police about Farabutto's threat?!"

"No," the chief said, pointing to her forehead. "But you did, birdbrain!"

"Derr..." Mina said, slapping her forehead. She lunged at Ms. O'Law, "but please don't let Farabutto know...He said if I testified against him and protected Winona...he'd kill Ch..."

The chief quickly shushed her with a confident smile. "Relax...you weren't even the first person to tell me. It was another birdbrain. One I've had the misfortune of knowing personally!"

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"Raven!" Mina exclaimed, grasping the air with her fists. "Somehow he's on top of everything and he isn't even here!"

"Oh he isn't on TOP of everything!" Chief Rita O'Law with in a buxom voice. "But that's between me and that birdbrain. What I need to tell you is that I'm looking into possible strongholds of the Used Gaming Mafia and you don't even need to tell anyone I am..."

"Great..." Mina said with a sigh of relief.

"But..." The chief said, leaning forward so her torso was in Mina's face. "I would greatly appreciate it if you can coax some information out of Farabutto when you cross examine him. Any lead could help us to find Mr. Cody."

"R-right," Mina said, nodding tentatively. "I'll try."

"No try," O'Law said, towering high over Mina. "You will. For the sake of your friends."

Mina turned to look Winona in her bright purple eyes.

If eyes could beg, Winona's were on their knees, Mina thought to herself.

She stepped forward with a nervous grin on her face. "Ok. I will. For you Winony. Lou may be crusading against you over some stolen merchandise, but I'll try my hardest to get him to spill his spaghetti!"

"Thank you," Winona answered, with a bow of her head. "I promise you that if you do this, light will forever shine on your tombstone!"

"Oh my lawd!" Mina exclaimed"I hope that's not for a very long time."

Winona Sumac held her hands to her mouth. "Oh don't worry. The reaper loves those who are kind to goths. It won't be for a long time!"

Mina blew out a sigh of relief. "Thank god..."

"Thank goths!" Winona said with a knowing smile. "Now Mina, let's get in there and try to get some leads!"

Mina nodded and the chief gave them a friendly salute. "Call me as soon as there is a recess," O'Law said, "If we can find out where Cody is, we can expose Mr. Farabutto as the true criminal before he can say Mama Mia!"

"Got it!" Both girls said at once.

The alarm on Mina's watch sounded. "It's time!" she said.

She looked at Winona and they both nodded, heading towards the court room. Mina held the large guilded door to the West Wing Court and allowed her client inside. She was about to proceed inside too, but something glinted in the corner of her eye. There a boy about her age standing inside the lobby with a glowing golden aura. She couldn't see his face but his physical was muscular and handsome. She immediately knew who it was, even without a gaze at her visage.

She tapped her butterfly necklace. "Please Chad," she pleaded. "Help me out here."

The boy vanished before her eyes, and with that, she went inside to face the most consequential court case of her life.
