Chapter 41: Boomsday 3000

Mina had never seen so many swords, daggers, knives, shotguns, blades and pistols in one room before. Housed inside cases of rectangular glass was ever weapon she could imagine. But that wasn't what drew everyone's attention. Rather, it was the enormous detonator the size of a block of cement lying on the floor. In explosive, orange and red lettering, it read, "Boomsday 3000."

"Yep," Officer O'Law said with a confident head nod. "Just as reported. The same kind of bomb used to blow up Ms. Goode and Business Park's chance of becoming a lawful city again!"

Monty Banks gave a congested gasp as if he was choking on his own spit. "Oh my gosh!" he gasped. "Thath isn't mine!"

Rita raised her eyebrows on her otherwise smooth forehead. "Didn't you say that all these items in your room were lawfully purchased and belonged to you?"

When Monty stifled another gasp, Giles the butler offered a clever smirk. "Indeed he did say that. So I guess you can say his business is booming! Oh ho ho!"

Rita slapped her knee. "I could tell you wanted to say that for a long time, Mr. Butler. And thanks to you, Monty will be behind bars, awaiting his trial of destiny."

With an effeminate "Oh my!" the soon-to-be convicted butler ran screaming to his mistress. "Oh Georgia. Oh sweet Georgia, my sweet peach! Promise me you'll save me when they post my bail!"

Mina could tell from the vacant expression on Ms. Georgia Peach's face that she wasn't going to be much help. Her words in her countryish drawl reinforced that.

"I'm sorry, Monty, ma darling. I know nothin' bout legal procedures!"

"Well then, pleasth!" Monty begged and lisped some more as he was being handcuffed. "Pleasth call my lawyers!"

Slightly empty eyed, Georgia tapped Mina on the shoulder. "Howdy doo! Can y'all help him, Miss and Mista Lawyer?!"

Mina was still shaken by the blast of knowing that Mr. Banks possessed an identical bomb. But...still, she didn't buy the truth even if it was currently half-off. Instead, she raised two hands and pinched her fingers together. Much to everyone's surprise, Mina responded with a loud 'ommmmmm'.

Rita shook her head. "Raven? Has your protege gone mental? What on earth is she doing?!"

"My sidekick," Raven grinned with his hands behind his back. "Is a bit psychic! She does this when she wants to think about something big."

"Good," the chief officer responded. "Because she's a little too young to be doing yoga!"

Mina continued to 'ommmm' loudly in their faces. Deep within her, her brain and her gut waged war. Her brain wanted nothing more than see Monty Banks behind bars for all the crooked things he did and how he would most likely win another two year term now that Greta was gone. But there was an unruly feeling in her gut that wasn't simply from all the Greek yogurt she ate that morning that Monty was...innocent. The reason was standing right in front of them.

She opened her eyes and dynamically threw her hand forward. "Connection!" she shouted. "I have a connection!"

"Make it quick," Rita muttered. "I've been waiting twenty years on the force to put this man behind bars."

"Monty Banks wasn't the only one who had access to this room, it was..."

She caught a squinted sneer from the butler. Mina immediately closed her lips and gave an awkward smile. "Umm..."

"Spit it out, pinky," Rita shouted. "Was it Colonel Ketchup in the conservatory?"

"Actually," Mina said, her hands on her hips. "I will save that answer for our day in court!"

"Wait-a-minute," Monty Banks exclaimed. "You're really gonna defend me in court? Even though I totally whipped Mrs. Goode in our Town Hall debates?!"

Mina shook her head, and pointed right at Monty. "First of all, Greta the Great had you totally owned last week. Your answer to everything was "orange soda fountains in all municipal buildings!"

"Second," Mina added. "I'm not defending you because I like you. I'm defending you because you're innocent!"

"He is?!" Rita exclaimed, nearly dropping her truncheon.

"I am?!" Monty exclaimed stupidly.

Georgia Peach took her fan and knocked him upside the head. "Of course you are, you ijit!"

"I believe," Mina said confidently. "From all I witnessed from the behavior from everyone in this room, including you, you're innocent, Monty and that somebody set you up."

"Great..." Monty grinned sheepishly. "Why exactly would anyone do a thing like that?"

Mina's grinned boldly, but her eyes slightly crossed. "I don't know...but you can bet your zowie I will find out!"
