A Curious Invite

It had been two months since the Aura's last strike. With Charlotte O'Scara (Miss Taurus) and Ritchie Lord (Mr. Cancer) and Bunting Dupree (Monsieur Virgo) all imprisoned, it seemed like the sting the Aura had in Business Park was over. Mina was thankful, as life as a defense attorney and a teenager had become a whole lot easier. Now she worried more about minor traffic accident lawsuits and dates than callous murders and framings. Speaking of dates, she had finally been on one with Mr. Justice himself, and it had been every bit as dreamy as it seemed in her imagination.

He took her to the fanciest restaurant in town, Les Schargo's and much to her relief, there was a non-snail menu for "vegans and those who think it's a bit weird to eat slimy bugs." Blind was an excellent conversationalist, and it seemed he did know things outside of law and breathing. He was an avid collector of plush and velvet blindfolds made of designer fabric, perfectly tailored to match his suits. For, "even if I am vision impaired," he said, "I prefer to be a feast for the eyes for my clients...and my suitors...."

Mina, who had been busy stuffing her face with a baguette could only answer by blushing bright red and nodding.

Blind also covered the check, which was fine by Mina as it was over 200$ and he was a perfect gentleman while escorting her to his limo. Indeed, he was an ideal gift for a girl who had not dated since her first boyfriend tragically passed...and yet, she still did not pursue a second date afterwards.

She did not know why either. Blind had been everything she ever wanted--handsome, suave, a guy with hair even shinier and sleeker than hers, and yet, she was still caught up in the events that had happened in the past...both recently and several years ago.

She was still waiting on the autopsy of those who did not survive the explosion at the MT institute. Many were foot soldiers of the Aura...but one man, his name--or alias--Raven Lockwood, a slightly older charming defense attorney with a voice like a parrot was among them. He had worked with Mina, and then betrayed her for the Aura, and then betrayed them for her. All in the course of a few short hours. Even being betrayed and confused by his existence, she still missed his avuncular sense of comedic timing and his strange pursuits involving plugging their company mascot, Harvey Birdbrain to anyone who would listen. He was gone now...possibly forever.

As she looked out the window of her second story apartment, the rain fell from concrete grey skies washing away her merriment that holiday season. She missed the California sun and the equally shining California dude who used to wrap his arms around her. She ho-hummed so loud, she almost missed the sound of the mail tumbling through a golden hatch in her door. She shuffled over, groaning intensely, and picked up the mail.

Bills...bills...bills but something caught her eye.

Written in elegant cursive, was a posh invite. It read, "Miss Mina Hawkins, you are cordially invited to a holiday party in the esteemed penthouse suite of Hotel Security, the securest hotel in all fifty states! The reason: I think you should know! We are about to add more harmony to Business Park!"
