Chapter 162: "I Know She Did It!"

Tragedy fell like the rain that stormy night. Mina couldn't keep her eyes off the news as it reported on President Louse's freak accident. Immediately after trouncing Maxine, the president suffered a thunderbolt out of the blue. It was unbelievable.

Her friends couldn't believe it either, expounding about it in their own unique ways. Trudy had finished her pizza and now took to pounding a large fist into her opposing one. "You know, there's a one in one millionth chance of being struck by lightning! Or winning the lottery...or me finding the perfect boyfriend."

Winona dreamily put her head in her hands staring at the catastrophe with her heavily rouged eyes. "What a way to go..." she sighed. "A thousand volts straight out of a gloomarvelous blackened sky."

"He's not dead," Blind answered. "He's just in critical condition."

Winona sighed again. "You know us goths. We always anticipate the sweet end. The more dire the better."

Blind faced his girlfriend who continued to remain transfixed on the television. He jostled her. "You okay, love?"

At last, Mina snapped out of her hypnosis. "I know she did it."

"Huh..." Blind said, seemingly amazed by her conclusion.

Mina saw her own face reflected in Blind's metallic visor. It was a strong and determined face, the first time she had seen resolve on it in months.

"You think Maxine struck him with lightning?" Blind asked. "How is that possible? I know she's a multi-billionaire, but I highly doubt she's a demi-goddess."

Mina shook her head. "No. I think she manufactured that lightning bolt. It was as fake as her face."

"Manufactured lightning?"

Mina took Blind by his shoulders. There was a wildness in her eyes. "I saw something when I was in the Empire Electra Building. A schematic. For a large gun."

That got her friends' attention too. "A gun?!" Winona and Trudy both asked.

Mina held her fingers together and created a finger gun. "A thunder gun...Krackow! And I don't mean the capital of Poland."

Both Blind and Trudy looked on her with disbelief, but Winona smiled widely. "This sounds so crazy, but much like my favorite author, Mr. Poe, there is truth in this madness."

Mina nodded. "I'm glad someone gets me! Even if its a deranged drug addict who married his own cousin. Just watch me. I'm gonna prove that this bolt was fake."

Blind's concerned face eased into a smile. "Even if we need more evidence for this case, darling. I must say that the motive of our suspect is completely believable. There's nothing Electra hates more than being below someone. And I didn't need eyes to see her get humiliated tonight by an overly talkative politician."

Blind brushed his hair back and offered her a debonair smile. "Just provide the evidence and you will have your checkmate."

Mina squealed with delight. Even her skeptical William was starting to believe her. Even more surprising, Blind's E-Phone started to ring in his pocket. It played a baroque tone fit for a classic symphony. He removed it from his pocket and switched it on speaker phone so everyone would hear.

A woman's voice resonated from the phone. It was professional sounding, yet a desperation seeped though. "Is this the famous prosecutor, William Justice?"

Blind's eyebrows lifted above his mechanical visor. "Yes..." he said, even if he no longer worked as one. "Who is this?"

"Sherry Louse," the woman said, "the First Lady of the United States."

Mina gasped. Why was Blind received a call from the president's wife? Could it be that...

"Mr. Justice, I am calling you because we are in need of the top prosecutor in the country."

"Why would you need me?" Blind asked, seemingly in disbelief himself.

"Because...we would like to try presidential candidate, Maxine Electra in a court of law!"

Mina's eyes widened. This was her chance. They could bring down Maxine for all of her wicked crimes.

Only one problem. Blind wasn't a prosecutor anymore...
