After her loving boyfriend hinted at going steady, Mina was on cloud ten and a half. Unfortunately, as soon as she exited the courthouse, she plummeted back down to earth.
The fog had cleared and the sun had finally shown its bright cheery face on that warm February day. Mina had lost the case, but she still marched triumphantly hand-in-hand with Blind. The chief, Sparky and Divine accompanied them to Blind's limo, the first two making sure they were protected from any remaining "Himbolake diehards" as the chief said. (She didn't take into account that only three remained and one was his mother.)
But they weren't assaulted by teenyboppers, instead the parking lot was lined with reporting agency vans, cameramen and street reporters, including Business Park's very own Tim Justin from Ear Hearing News.
The normally friendly reporter had a darkened sneer on his face as he thrust the microphone in her face. He was flanked by a cameraman who got so close to Mina's head with his camera she was afraid she'd get knocked back.
"Mina Hawkins?" The reporter asked. "A word with you please?"
"Yeah?" Mina said, still feeling heavenly from her handholding. "What's up?"
The spikey haired reporter smirked. "How does it feel to defend a murderer in court?"
"Whuh...wha? What in the double huh?" she exclaimed. "Umm that's oddly forward? What gives?"
The reporter was unflinching with his microphone. "Answer the question please!"
The cameras flashed in her face and she realized that he was not being as friendly as before. She shuddered and Blind quickly took her by the hand. "Clear the way, chief..." he said. "Paparazzi, and they're out for blood."
The chief narrowed her eyes without wrinkling her Slowtoxed forehead. "Paparazzi. I hate these guys. They killed my favorite royal."
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
She looked at her diminutive blonde deputy. "Alright. Get em' Sparky!"
"Umm how ma'am?" Sparky said with a hasty salute "They aren't committing any crime!"
Rita O'Law rolled her eyes and grabbed Sparky by the back of his uniform and threw him straight into the crowd of reporters. "This is for Lady Di!" she screamed and turned to Mina, Divine and Blind. "Now go!"
The three jogged to his stretched limo, and elderly Divine remarked. "You know, back in my day, I knew a Papa Razzi!"
Blind opened the door and helped her and Mina inside. "This is no time for your stories grandma."
"No that's it..." she answered as Blind entered the vehicle. "I just knew one."
Even inside the cushy interior of the limo, Mina still had to blink the flashes out of her eyes. Even worse, the normally friendly reporter's fixed grin was burned in her brain like his body housed some hell demon.
"Why are they after me?" Mina demanded as the limo pulled out. "It's not like I committed the murder!"
Blind and Divine were silent until they had escaped the courthouse's parking lot. Blind placed a consoling hand on his girlfriend's shoulder. Divine, however, was as caustic as usual. "Dear, I'm surprised that big beaky birdman didn't teach you about reputations as a defense attorney. One bad client can soil you forever, and that pop star was as bad as they come."
Mina buried her face in her hands. "Oh noes... Don't let this happen to me!"
Surprisingly, Divine's face softened. "Fortunately, dear, you also have a top court justice and foxy gramma in law to speak to the press for you and clear things up ."
Lifting her head, Mina gazed at Divine. For the first time, the grouchy justice looked like a sweet grandma to her. "O-M-G. Really?"
"Of course, sweetie!" Divine said. "You were on the right side of justice. My side!"
"Can I hug you, gramma?" Mina exclaimed as Blind gave them both a look of approval.
Divine Justice nodded. "Just don't mess up my back, dear!"
Mina was about to hug a court justice for the first time in her life when suddenly the Ninja Kitty chiptune went off on her E-Phone. She nearly did a double take when she saw the Caller ID.
It was Maxine Electra. A call from the devil.
She decided the best thing to do was put the phone on speaker so her savvy legal boyfriend and grandma could hear.
"Hello?" Mina asked.
A husky and very satisfied voice answered. "Is this Mina Hawkins? The small town, small time defense attorney?"
Mina took a deep breath. "Yes. It is..."
"Check the news tonight, baby!" Electra chortled. "And remember, when you cross wires with me, you'll never attorney in this town again!
