Chapter 66: A Eulogy of Smiles

Chapter 66: A Eulogy of Smiles

The smoldering ruins of the MT IT Institution left Mina in tears. The entire building had been demolished in a fiery burst of flames, leaving countless people wounded or dead. Raven was the biggest casualty as most were villainous soldiers of the Aura. Even though it was so awful to think of, Mina couldn't help but watch the smoke and fire burn the skies.

Bunting and Ritchie Lord were guided into the chief's police car, and they too seemed oddly quiet. But when Mina caught a glimpse of who was also in the car, she knew why.

Charlotte O'Scara was sitting between them, her deadly hands cuffed in the backseat. She hissed like a western rattlesnake when she saw her two trusted associates. "Yer lucky ma hands aren't free..." she said. "And I got a forced nail clipping. Else I would dice up your-not-so-pretty faces for failin' me!"

"If only they could hand cuff her mouth," Ritchie snickered, but he sobbed when Charlotte shot daggers from her eyes.

"Merci!" Bunting said. "We are lucky we are dainty men so we do not 'ave to go to prison with Miss Taurus!"

Charlotte's eyes dilated in absolute anger. "Oh you think yer gonna be safe from me?" she growled. "Do you know how many burly men from the Aura have been incarcerated?! Let's jus' say, they'd love a nice pair of demure skinny boys like you!"

Bunting and Ritchie began to hold each other and sob.

"Y'all haven't seen the last of me..." Charlotte said to Mina with a dark shadow cover her eyes. "If you really think you or that pretty-boy prosecutor can really stop us. Y'all got another thing coming."

"You know," Chief O'Law smirked. "These wonderful threats are all going on record right?!"

"Consarnit!" Charlotte howled. "From now on, I am usin' my country given right to remain silent and will simply glare at you with ma evil eyes."

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Charlotte scowled and glared at Mina. The young attorney wiped the tears from her eyes and said, "Time to do the only thing to combat that."

She turned aside to face Rita instead. There was a look of plausible sadness on the chief's face too, but she didn't cry. "I wish I was tough like you," Mina said, sniffling. "You are really strong, chief. Especially knowing your ex boyfriend died in a fiery explosion."

Rita managed a weak smile. "Oh, I'd be balling like a baby right now," she said, placing a consoling arm on Mina. "But the Slotox has frozen my face and that includes the tear ducts."

Mina sighed. "I wish I could get some o' that..."

"Hopefully, not for a long time," the chief answered, before she laughed. "But what am I saying, I'm still 29!"

"That you are," Mina said, looking away in utter sadness. "I just wish that wasn't the way my mentor and I had to part ways."

"Hey now," the chief remarked in her husky voice. "You know Raven...he was a total jokester and never liked to see anyone frown. I think smiling is the best way you could honor that birdbrain...."

Mina turned to face the chief again. "You know, you're right..." she said. "I can smile and..."

"Hello there ladies!" a deep, goofy and lispy voice called from behind them.

It was Monty Banks, and he had his toupee on backwards, making it look like a roughed up, dead squirrel on his head. He held his hands together and grinned widely. "And hello to you, my kind attorney!"

"What do you want?" Mina asked, feeling slightly annoyed. "I'm trying to smile right now and it's hard when you're around."

"Oh ho," Monty said, feigning hurt. "That stings so much, sweety. Especially, because I wanted to tell you, that you are about to get your student loans waived for good!"

"What?!" Mina stammered.

"You and that handsome young prosecutor flipped the case for me!" he exclaimed. "I...Monty P. Banks am still a free man!"

"That's wonderful!" Mina said, with a genuine smile. But soon, her face turned to one of panic. "That handsome young prosecutor...oh my lawdy. What happened to Blind?!"

The chief offered Mina a look of sadness. "He's in the hospital right now...those venomous nails put him in critical condition..."

"Hold my E-Phone!" Mina shouted, pulling it out of her pocket. "Or rather, I'll hold it. Because I'm taking a taxi straight to the hospital to see him! I can't let him die...not when..."

Mina gasped, realizing what she had been feeling towards Blind all along.

The young attorney balled up both her fists and held them tight to her chest. "I love him!"
