Chapter 212: Taking A Final Risque

Chapter 212: Taking A Final Risque

All eyes were on Mina with this dramatic revelation. Even her enemies couldn't take their peepers off her. Or more specifically, the baggy she dangled in front of everyone showcasing the sparkling bauble that had been stolen by Maria Santiago herself.

Except it hadn't been.

The curator Jem Diamond had it all along.

"What does this mean?" the judge asked, she too was fully entranced.

A bead of sweat inched down Mina's cheek. She tapped her fingers nervously. "It means, that Jem Diamond stole the Rubylove and paid the price. Someone blew him to Kingdom come."

Inspector Croissant held his hand to his face and let out a rousing round of haw haw haws! "And are you implying that Ms. Santiago killed Diamond over the Rubylove?! Eef so, you are simply doing the work of my prosecutor and moi!"

Monica remained confident on the stand surprisingly. "Actually mis amores," she said, brimming with confidence. "She's actually proving quite the opposite. She's proving that YOU killed him! And that you had taken a hat I left in Quebec in order to frame for it!"

The detective's eye widened hugely behind his magnified monocle. "Oh ho? And how do you prove zat! Robot boy! Do your work and pros-zee-cute zis senorita already!"

But Mr. Borg was silent. Silent expect for one sentence from his vocoder. "Go on," he said to Mina. "Prove it."

"Buh-wuh-buh-huh!" Mina blurted, the wires in her brain attempting to fuse a connection.

"C'mon chica!" Monica exclaimed, brushing her flowing chocolate hair and dazzling her. "Take one last risk!"

Feeling the infectious flamboyance of the true Maria Santiago, Mina nodded. She would have to take one last risk. Or rather one last Le Risque!"

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Mina threw her hand forward. "Monica...or rather Maria Santiago couldn't have killed Mr. Diamond for one reason. She wasn't there. She was busy stealing something at the same time! The fake Rubylove!"

Inspector Croissant nearly choked on the crumbs of his faux French pastry. But he still had one last card up his trenchcoat. "Oh yeah, Miss Pinky? Where is it then, haw?"

Mina held her hands to her cheeks. "oh nosy. I didn't even think of that?!"

Breathing harder, the room spun around her. This risk had not paid off until a fabulous accented voice interrupted the detective's snide laughs.

"Senorita Rosa! Is this what you're looking for!"

Miraculously, Maria Montero produced a sparkling ruby from her pockets. Or at least, it resembled one. She held it to the light, nearly dazzling everyone in the process!"

"Where in the zowie did you get that?!" Mina screamed.

Monica Montero chuckled deeply. "Why? Do you not know who I am?"

She pulled the invisible brim over her eyes. "Saludos. I am Maria Santiago, famed and fabulous master thief!"

There was a resounding cry from the crowd. The famous thief had managed to pull one over everyone. The judge, the prosecutor and yes, Inspector Croix-Saint.

Or rather, Pierre Le Risque!

Speaking of the thief turned detective, the man had turned around in his dark trench coat. Mina was dying to see the expression in his stupid face now that he was exposed like the fake Rubylove.

"Mr. Croix-Saint?" the judge demanded. "I would like to question your alibi!"

Instead, of answer about his alibi, Croix-Saint started laughing hard and sharp with a loud "haw haw haw!"

Either he had snapped, Mina thought, or he was attempting to huff laughing gas to death. Without warning, the man turned around and with a powerful leap, jumped onto the prosecution's desk.

"Fools!" he chuckled, kicking his paper work off the desk. "You may 'ave thought I was good Detective Croix-Saint, but I am not. I am...!!!"

He ripped his curly long mustache off his face, screaming in pain. "I am Pierre Le Risque, master French Canadian jewel thief!"

"Wait!" Mina exclaimed. "That was a false mustache?!!"

Pierre whimpered and sobbed. "It's not! I just wanted to rip something off dramatically!"

Mina placed her hands on her hips. "Well you already ripped everyone off dramatically."

Divine nodded alongside Mina. "Yes he has. Now please, Balif the bailiff, will you please take out the trash?!"

The hulking, bald man headed straight for the leaping interloper. "Oh mommy!" he cried as his criminal career came to an end.
