Chapter 12: Goldie Digsy

The idyllic countryside outside of Business Park rolled by in greens, yellows. Gravel roads ran parallel to the fields and were criss-crossed with telephone lines and pylons. The breeze from the rolled down window whipped Mina's dark brown hair and made her squint as she searched for a location hidden in the hills.

Gemini took a road off of the interstate road to follow an enormous mountain that it curved around. Slowly but surely, it revealed a mansion built into the rocks.

"Wowie zowie!" she exclaimed. "The Rocketstar Ranch. I never thought I'd see it, much less know where it is!"

"Just remember kid," Raven said as he pulled up to a cobalt gate enforced by pointed spikes. "We're not here on a sight seeing tour. No swooning at handsome actors and no asking for autographs."

Mina placed her hand to her chin and grinned. "Aww man, but I was gonna pawn those autographs off so we could afford a bigger TV at the office!"

Raven brushed his goatee. "Ok...maybe that's the one exception!"

To the left of the gate, a small booth housed a guard. The guard, a non-plussed woman turned her bored looking eyes towards Raven's car. Dressed head to toe in a Zork Empire officer's uniform, she looked like she'd rather be anywhere in the world (or out of this world) than where she currently was. She loudly chewed and cracked a wad of gum between her teeth. "Welcome to Rocketstar Ranch..." She muttered. "Where outer space truly is the place."

As Raven rolled down the window, her demeanor nearly changed. "Oh hello, cutie!" she said, her eyelids suddenly lowering. "What business do you have here?"

Raven smirked. "Get a lot of nerds around here don't ya?"

"Yes," the woman said, nearly swallowing her gum. "Seeing you is literally a breath of fresh air in an endless space void!"

"Well, I do have an air of debonair!" Raven cackled to himself. "At least, that's what my mom says"

Mina angrily tapped him on the shoulder. "Can you stop flirting with the guard lady. We need to get inside and see the crime scene!"

"Hey now," Raven cawed. "I wasn't flirting. I was uh distracting her so we could sneak in!"

"You were what?!" the female guard exclaimed, gulping down her gum. She coughed but reached for her walkie talkie, ready to radio help.

"Oh no no!" Raven shouted and he turned to Mina. "Look what ya did, kid! Now we're going to jail. She's gonna call the fuzz on us! Or the space police!"

Mina sighed and pulled a bronze badge from her pocket. It was emblazoned with the words "Business Park Attorney." She flashed it at the guard.

"Attorney?!" she said, nearly dropping her receiver. "You're..."

"State attorneys!" Mina said flashing a shiny grin to match her badge. "We're here for the Star Skye case!"

"Oh..." the woman said, rolling her eyes. "You work for her. That...b..."

"I sure have an 'itch'" Raven said suddenly scratching his head. "But yeah, seems Star is giving you a nasty itch too."

"Ugh..." The guard said. "She makes me ugh."

"What's wrong with her?" Mina asked. "She seemed fine to me."

The female guard looked back and forth before muttering, "she literally stole the love of my life!"

"Whaaaaat?!" Raven and Mina both exclaimed.

Mina shook her head in disbelief. "What do you mean?"

The young woman's teeth spread apart in a grimace. "I pined for Dirk Lord! I'm a very big fan. But he only had eyes for that muscle toned mega woman."

"Dirk Lord?" Mina asked, her eyes lined with questions. "Isn't he a bit geeky and old? I though you said you didn't like nerds!"

With a playful wink, the guard untied her blonde hair and gave a sparkling grin. "But the difference is, he's a rich actor! It doesn't matter what he looks like."

Mina and Raven looked at each other. "Um, excuse me lady..." Raven asked in his equally geeky voice. "Are you a gold..."

"Why yes," the female guard giggled. "My name is Goldie. Goldie Digsy. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Attorney. Care to tell me your net worth?"

"Ummm," Raven said, raising his eyebrows. "When I went fishing this weekend, my net didn't catch anything of worth..."

"Forget it," Goldie muttered. "Anyway,"--she pressed a button and the gate slowly creaked open. "Enjoy your visit and I hope you don't find anything of worth. Y'know, to help your case!"

"Why?" Mina asked, feeling a bit nervous.

Goldie's face gave a dour frown. "If I'm trapped in here without a nerdy but rich millionaire to whisk me away, I hope Star rots in jail too."

As they drove inside, they thanked Goldie but Mina couldn't shake the feeling they found their first suspect. And she had a motive worth its price in gold.
