Chapter 161: Rarer than Being Struck by Lightning

Bird Brains Lawyering Co, 8:00 PM, July

Rain poured heavily on the roof as thunder rolled and crashed like a set of cymbals. Mina reclined on the sofa in lounge area, watching her adversary on TV. Maxine Electra was having her official debate with the incumbent president, Gary Louse.

She was dressed down. A pink Ninja Kitty shirt and jean shorts. Her hair remained a dyed yellow, tied back in pigtails. It was a sick reminder of her failed attempt to infiltrate the Electra Company.

Her besties Winona and Trudy accompanied her, and together they snacked on trashy pepperoni pizza from the fast food chain, Pizza Shack and riffed on Mina's unfortunate hair color.

"Gee," Trudy said as she slurped the cheese off a gooey slice. "We used to be the Three Non Blondes. Now we're the Two Non Blondes and a Blonde!"

Winona smirked, being careful not to smudge her gothic purple lip-gloss as she ate. "That's a bigger mouthful than your pizza slice, Trudy."

Mina rolled her eyes, feeling helplessly drowned in a sea of peroxide. "I almost feel those two meanie girls did this to me on purpose. They probably knew I wasn't going to get an actual job at the Electra Company and they ruined my brainy brunette locks on purpose."

"I could have told you that," Trudy answered, pinching some pepperoni off another slice. "My mum tried to sign up to be a janitor there and they said, 'you need a doctorate in Janitorial Studies!' Those don't even exist!"

Mina just leaned back into the sofa, letting the fluffy cushion swallow her. This was the worst year ever. No job, no fake job, fake hair and...the only thing she had going for her, just walked through the door.

The upstairs door of Bird Brains opened and Blind came in, sporting his spiffy silver fedora, and a suave grey detective suit.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

"Whoa momma!" Mina exclaimed. "You can inspect my gadgets anyday."

William merely scoffed as he sat down beside her and nuzzled her. "Dorky comments like that only work when you're adorkable."

Her Willy had been quite successful being a blind detective, almost as much as a blind prosecutor. But like Mina, his current case dogged him. Trudy chewed loudly with her mouth open as she talked. "Did you ever find the whereabouts of that Maria Santiago art thief? I hear she's more elusive than the guy from Where's Walfredo."

Blind shook his head. "No. I'd say she's managed to pull the wool over my eyes for this long, but that's redundant in my case."

Winona smiled sweetly. "Imagine she works at the art museum or something obvious like that."

Blind frowned as he squeezed Mina's shoulders tight. "I really don't think that's possible. We vetted everyone there. Just seems my adversary is always one step ahead of me."

Even resting her head on Blind's toned pec, didn't do much to comfort Mina's restless soul. "Tell me about it," she sighed. "Maxine is so many steps ahead of me that, she's lapped me again. She's completely untouchable."

Suprisingly, Blind placed his hand to her mouth, quieting her with a single finger. It was kinda sexy, but baffling. She wished she could look into his eyes to see what lay inside them currently, but that was an impossibility.

"Why did you shush me?" Mina asked.

"Because," Blind said. "No one in this world is impenetrable. Not even the richest man, woman or anyone in this world. You might have to think outside of the box, but Maxine does have a weakness. It's fitting for me to say, but sometimes your eyes can't see something lying right in front of your face."

Mina thought on his words, wishing she had some sugar free yogurt for a real Yogurt Meditation. Instead, she turned her eyes to the TV where President Gary Louse was managed to get several words edgewise over Electra.

"Whoa Nelly!" Trudy exclaimed, picking more cheese off the box. "This guy's an even bigger mouth than Maxine. He's totally yakking louder than the Queen of Mean."

Mina was amazed too. Electra was bright red, her eyes looking like they could catch fire and incinerate her nemesis. If it meant anything, at least Electra might not become president if he kept this up.

When the debate ended, Electra refused to shake hands with her opponent. The president seemed to have won, at least according to the consensus in the room.

At long last, Maxine had been treated to a final helping of karma.

The cameras panned to outside the Business Park municipal building where the debate was being held. Gary Louse walked to his limo in the parking lot in the rain.

Then the unthinkable happened.

He was struck by lightning.
