Chapter 177: Unlucky Seven

The masked maniac shoved his hand behind the door, preventing Mina from leaving the bathroom. She gasped as beady eyes learned through the blood red sevens on his mask.

It didn't take a master detective to know who it was.

"S-s-sev..." Mina murmured.

"The unluckiest Seven you'll ever come across, beotch!" the man sniveled with his knife behind her soft neck. "You scream and I stab!"

Mina wanted to scream anyway. She was about to lose her mind from the sheer fear. Was this the end? At the hand of a psycho killer defense attorney? Even if she got out of this, maybe she'd retire from the defense position if this is what her profession resorted to.

"Why...?" Mina choked. "Why do this? If anyone discovers you, you're bound to lose everything."

"Everything..." he sneered. "I have nothing to lose. I've had nothing for a long time..."

His voice cracked a little over the last admission. Maybe there was some emotion motivating his rampage? Like a trusty attorney, it was up to Mina to break down his argument and bide some time. Not just for the sake of the case, but her life as well.

"What do you mean 'you've had nothing's?" Mina whispered. "You're an accomplished defense attorney defending a corrupt billionaire? What more could you possibly want?"

"I dunno, Not-Ashley," Sev growled. "Love? Adoration? Even acknowledgement?"

"From Ashley..." Mina mouthed and Sev's knife trembled. "Ashley never even acknowledged you!"

"And it's not like I don't stand out!" Sev cried, his voice soaked in disgusting phlegm from all that rasping.

Mina resisted all urge to remark "You got that right..."

But she didn't want to trigger him further. Especially when he was one trigger away from murdering her.

"She just cared about that pretty-boy William!" Sev snarled. "They were always together on campus. If I didn't know any better it was an arranged marriage how close they were!"

Mina resisted rolling her eyes. It basically WAS an arranged marriage set up by two snooty families for two similar yet incompatible prodigies. Did she tell him? Perhaps she'd let him talk more and just waste more time. They'd be easily discovered that way.

"From the shadows," Sev expounded "I did everything for her. And by everything, I did the greatest act of revenge when Mr. Twinkles broke her maiden heart during the bar exam."

Mina's eyes bulged open. "Greatest act of revenge?"

Sev's bloodshot eyes flared with madness behind the mask. No doubt there was a twisted smile on his face when he told Mina the truth. "It was I who threw acid in his face. Cheating eyes can't leer when they're burned out!"

Mina drew a sharp breath and her fists balled up. They weren't exactly weapons of mass destruction, but she was ready to punch Severus Silverman into a brand new dimension.

"You...blinded...my Blind!"

Sev chuckled, but slowly his mirth transformed into self righteous rage. "I wanted to do more than that. I wanted him never to work in the legal business again. And yet, that creep prevailed. And worse...I told Ashley, my beloved and she screamed that she never wanted to see me again! When it was me who righted the wrong! Me ME MEEEEEE!"

Mina wanted so badly to wring his neck and scream, "You're not an opera singer, you are the biggest monster to ever exist in the court of law!"

"But don't worry," Sev said, catching his breath. "I took care of Ashley. Seems I'm more in love with the concept of her than her in actuality. She made a hole in my heart and I made bullet holes in her!"

Again, Mina's arms seized up. Her eyes dilated with cracked sclera over the horror of Sev's murderous rampage. He had attempted to ruin the lives of two of the greatest prosecutors she had ever known. He was truly an unlucky seven that had inflicted misery on all those he had come in contact with.

"And now," Sev said, drawing the knife ever closer to her throat. "I'm going to kill William's pretty little girlfriend. The one he preferred over a legitimate genius. Well, now he will have neither!"
