Chapter 158: The Megalomaniac Manager

Chapter 158: The Megalomaniac Manager

Inside, the elevator played a light bossa nova as Mina rode all the way up to the hell. Upon closer inspection, the tune was actually a musak rendition of the massive company's advertisement jingle, "Electra: All that's fit to plug in!"

Mina couldn't resist tapping her heel to the brainwashing slogan. She pressed the button for the 99th floor which sat at the top of a pyramid of buttons. Mina wasn't as OCD as her prosecutor boyfriend, but even she was irritated by the fact the building ended on an odd number. Electra thrived on orderly chaos it seemed, and having 99 floors fit nicely with her aesthetic.

At last, after what seemed like fifteen minutes, the elevator dinged at floor 99 and a recording of Electra's voice guffawed. "Floor 99. Much like me, baby, it seems you like things on the top."

Mina rolled her eyes. She was well aware of powerful men overcompensating, but Maxine Electra could not resist hammering home the power-top business woman aesthetic at every chance she got. She was beginning to realize why Sparky was so into domineering women. Seemed that's all he was raised around as a boy.

The doors slid open, and Mina entered the domain of her greatest enemy yet.

Much to her surprise, the top of the building was much more humble than the grand entrance. There were more secretary desks and cubicles. A business meeting room with glass windows and a round desk. Most notably, at the far end, there was a door with a massive thunderbolt engraving. It could be read all the way from the elevator. "The Big Bolt!" it said proudly, with "Maxine Electra" written beneath it.

No doubt, Mina would have to do some super sleuthing in there. But first, she'd have to land the job.

"Excuse me," a caustic British voice sounding like it was from upper class districts of London, England. "Are you from Gaper magazine?"

"Er....ah...no," Mina answered.

"Then, why are you just standing there gaping?"

Mina looked at the secretary desk. There sat a young woman with an incredibly pinched looking face. Her cheek bones and nose all were quite high on her face and her hair was a peculiar shade of strawberry blonde. Unlike Mina, this woman did wear chunky thunderbolt shaped earrings down to her shoulders.

"That's a new shade I haven't seen yet," Mina muttered, being used to lemon yellow and piss white for blonde hair. "That's a nice dye job."

"How very dare you!" the woman snapped. "That is my natural colour...and I do mean, colour with a U. That's how fancy I am!"

"Geez Louise," Mina muttered. "Somehow she makes Ashley and Vicki's uppityness look like downityness!"

Mina faked a smile (very easy to do in front of these kind of people) and bobbed her head. "Anyway, it's nice to meet you. Who exactly are you?"

The strawberry blonde rolled her eyes and sneered. "Did you even read my plaque, Yankee ditzbrain? My name is Erika. Erika Wattson. And I am the personal assistant manager of Ms. Electra herself. Anything that gets to Maxine goes through me first...if at all."

Mina put her hand to her chin and giggled. "Like her personal dustbin?"

Erika snorted. "How very dare you! I am more like a fancy disposal in a high end penthouse apartment and I will see to it that riff raff like you is done away with!"

"No wait," Mina said stifling a reach. "I have an appointment with Ms. Electra. Alexandria from the bottom floor vetted me through."

Erika squeezed a ballpoint pen so hard Mina was afraid the top would shoot off in an explosion of ink. "Those bottom feeders should know better than to let the hoi polloi into Ms. Maxine's domain. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to send you back down."

"No wait!" Mina said, and she whipped out her trump card again. "Vicki Electra personally recommended me."

Erika held her hand to her mouth and gave a posh chuckle. There was hate in her eyes, and admittedly, Mina had let her feelings of brunette superiority affect how she was talking to people in here.

Erika's voice bounced mirthfully. "You really think a piece of paper is going to let your shiny hiney into the domain of the head mistress, little girl?! This isn't a field trip. Ho ho! It took me an entire acting career in Great Britain to land me this job! Plus status, looks, charisma and pedigree. None of which you clearly have, Cali girl!"

"I beg your pardon, Ms. Wattson."

Erika's little tirade was interrupted by a boisterous and husky voice. Suddenly, Mina observed Erika was eating her words with a fork and spoon and gagging on them. Towering over her, was the Big Bolt herself, Maxine Electra.
