Chapter 173: The Whether Girl

Mina tried her best to look like a domineering prosecutor as she read her case file on Maxine Electra. She deepened her perky voice (even though it could hardly match Blind's or even Maxine's baritone) and puffed out her chest.

"My client, First Lady of America, Sherry Louse, has accused Maxine Electra, head of the Electra Company and presidential candidate of a shocking...underhanded tactic in order to defeat her competition."

"Oh?" Maxine Electra asked, raising her eyebrows on a frozen forehead. "What tactic did I commit, Ms. Prosecutor? And may I add that you look shockingly familiar?"

Mina gulped. Did Maxine recognize her from her brief stint as Andy Zapps?

Blind muttered softly to his prosecutor-turned-girlfriend. "Pay her no mind. If you have courage in your convictions, you'll convict her no doubt."

"Right..." Mina answered. "Maxine Electra is accused of striking my client with a bolt of lightning."

The crowd rumbled like a roll of thunder themselves. They knew of the lightning strike but they had no anticipated this defense-turned-prosecutor to accuse Maxine Electra of something worthy of the God of Thunder himself.

Maxine was completely unphased. As was Severus. A large serpentine smirk stretched across his face.

"I suppose she merely extended her hands and let the lightning fly from her fingertips? Are you calling my client a demi-god?"

"No..." Mina said. "Just a desperate billionaire who thinks she is one. And I have photographic evidence to prove it..."

Mina reached in her pocket expecting to feel her E-Phone. But much to her surprise and dismay, it was gone.

"Ummm..."

Divine offered her a cautious gaze. She didn't look ready to hammer her with her trademark sass, but rather merely concerned for her and Blind.

"Please don't tell me you have ants in your pants, child..." Divine answered as Mina continued to fidget.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"Er...no...it's more what isn't in my pants today!"

"Correction!" Severus exclaimed. "Justice, actually I believe her pants are on fire. Because she is a complete liar!"

The judge slammed her gavel. "I permit no more pants metaphors in this courtroom. Clearly, Prosecutor Hawkins does not have what she was looking for. If she can't find it, we will move onto the witnesses that Hawkins has procured."

"Perfect," Blind whispered. "This will stall them. Who did you choose as witnesses?"

"Erm..." Mina said, uncomfortable. "There were only a few people there and..."

Suddenly, the courtroom was filled with a news fanfare of the chintzy variety. The midi trumpets blasted loudly to announce a new on the scenes report from Ear Hearing News.

Mina gulped when she realized who'd be testifying.

It was the normally respectable ace reporter, Tim Justin, who unfortunately had been bought out by the Electra Company.

A sick grin formed on his face. His pants were no doubt stuffed with Electra money so he could afford a sleek new apartment and sports car. Or maybe he was smug because he had been seduced by the crafty cougar and gotten himself a silver fox. Either way, Mina knew he would do nothing but sway the court in her favor.

Both Severus and Electra rubbed their hands together hungrily as the young man stood up on the witness podium. He was handsome, young and charming. A perfect face for nightly news.

Mina asked the first question, hoping to grill him before he could formulate something to say in favor of the defense.

"Tim Justin," she said, pointing a finger in his direction. "You were with Ms. Electra on the night of the debate. I recall her telling Mr. Louse to be careful because lightning does strike twice. He was the struck by lightning. Do testify to this statement."

Both Tim and the defense were dead silent. Mina was motionless but inside she was doing a happy dance. She had stormed the stormers right out of the gate.

At last, Tim thrust his reporter's microphone forward. "This is Tim Justin, of Ear Hearing News, and I do not believe I am qualified to comment on the weather."

"Why not?" Mina asked. She glared at him. "Stop being a microphoney and answer my question..."

"I an a humble reporter," he said. "Not a weatherman."

Tim pointed beside him and Mina did a double take.

There was a young woman standing beside him in nothing but a bikini spangled in orange suns. She had long blonde hair, golden brown skin and large circular sun shaped earrings. And a yellow umbrella to boot.

"Here's Sunny Storms with the weather!" Tim Justin exclaimed.

"A weather girl?!" Mina exclaimed.

"Exactly!" Sunny shouted, twirling her umbrella and popping her foot up.

Mina couldn't believe it. She had never seen a witness redirect everyone else to another one. It was ridiculous, but it seemed that this is how the news worked...even in a courtroom?

This was Eagle Attorney level absurdity as Sunny and Justin traded places on the podium.

The charming weather girl gave everyone a wink and another foot pop. "I'll tell everyone WHETHER Electra did it or not!"
