Chapter 45: It's Probably Nothing

Chapter 45: It's Probably Nothing

After Blind's phone call to the chief, Mina was silent. She was mulling over the thoughts in her head. Where could Raven possibly have been if he wasn't at the police office downtown? There was no way he was tied up in suspicious Aura dealings was he?

After all, he was an upstanding attorney who taught Mina some super handy tips and tricks she never even learned at the Lawson Academy. Of it wasn't for his sleight of hands he showed her during cross examination, she probably would have been a stay at home soccer mom. She sunk lower and lower in her seat, completely caught in her personal conundrum.

"What's wrong?" Blind asked, surprisingly gallantly.

"Er...how do you know something's wrong?" Mina asked, fidgeting over his question.

"I may not be able to see," Blind said curtly, "But I certainly know when a obnoxiously chatty person is silent. Is this over Mr. Lockwood?"

"No..." Mina exclaimed, before sighing. "Yes. He lied to me tonight. In fact, he's the reason I had to walk through that dangerous alleyway. Do you think he..."

"Did it on purpose?" Blind said cutting her off. "If you want my honest opinion..."

Mina immediately perked up. She was exhausted, but Blind was literally the only person she wanted to talk to about this.

"He's a completely careless idiot!" Blind answered.

"What...the what?" Mina stammered.

"I've dealt with this guy before and he's an extremely gifted attorney, but I think he has a bad case of ADD, because he doesn't seem to care about anything that's happening in the present."

"You're...right..." Mina said, thinking of all his day trips to the casino and resorts.

"I had a court case against this guy," Blind remarked. "And he spent 15 minutes of his client's time picking up a ham, cheese and snail sandwich from Les Schargo's. He then showed up 'fashionably late' as he called it."

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

"And what happened?" Mina asked with her hands clasped together. "I don't think I've heard this one..."

"He won the case," Blind muttered, a hint of contempt in his voice. "Got his client off scot free while wolfing down a putrid sandwich. Maybe it was the fumes that was making my grandma nauseous, but she saw his side almost immediately."

"That's my Raven..." Mina said softly.

"Court case in point," Blind said, raising a finger. "He is endlessly talented and thoughtful when he wants to be. But like a cat, he just keeps chasing that shiny object. If you ask me, what Raven did was nothing out of the ordinary."

"You're right..." Mina said again. "It's probably nothing..."

Normally, her anxiety wouldn't allow her to feel at ease after such an encounter, but this was Blind. He was one of the most together prosecutors ever (and his dashing good looks were a bonus.)

"If I were you, rookie," Blind said as the limo pulled up to her apartment. "I'd sleep it off. The best officers...or at least, the best we could find, are combing the city for this escaped villain, and tomorrow you can tell your mentor that he really needs to stay on the ball."

Mina nodded with a wide smile. "Of course, I will, Willy! Just because you said so I will."

"Jeez, you're submissive," Blind remarked as she exited the vehicle. "I wish you were like that in court."

Blind turned to face her as she stood outside. "But just a word of warning, I'm going all out against your client two days from now. Monty Banks is a slime that many a prosecutor has been trying to jail for twenty years!"

"I...uh...don't blame them," Mina said with another head nod. "I wouldn't have taken this case normally. It's just...I...actually think he's innocent...this time."

"Well then," Blind scoffed. "No use telling me now. Tell that to the justice. Prove that to the world! You've really impressed me, but I think that you're going to need to bring your A-plus-game this time around...especially since they are probably involved."

"Who?" Mina said, but Blind cut her off again.

"Get some rest, Mina." Blind said softly. "Somehow you're not that annoying outside of court. I wouldn't mind another outing like this sometime..."

Mina raised her finger, but the electronically operated door closed, leaving her in the autumn air. She went to wave, but she remembered that Blind couldn't see her.

"Oh my lawdy," Mina gasped after the car pulled away.

"Another outing...?" she said, placing her hands to her cheeks. "I'm not that annoying? Why does this sound like a passive aggressive way of saying he likes me!"

She would have melted on the spot if she didn't have to think about two other things. She'd have to confront Raven tomorrow and...the Aura may be pulling the strings in her next court case!
