Chapter 2 - Life of a Beggar

----------------------------------------

In the main streets of the Town of Tal, there is a woman with silver hair. Fluttering wildly as the hair passes by, this woman is wearing a brown dress. Carrying a bag of goods, the woman scanned the main streets with her gray eyes and spotted a beggar raising his palms towards the people walking by.

The smell of the beggar was too much to handle. She herself felt her nose shrink but even so, she walked to the beggar. Took hard bread from her goods, and gave it. The Beggar looked at the food and nods his head. The woman with silver hair then smiled and continued walking out of the place.

She handed the beggar hard bread instead of coins because she knew the beggar. This beggar was none other than the dumb mute infamous even in the slums. Apparently, the dumb mute could not even understand how the currency works in the town. So giving him a gold coin will be worthless. She is a kindhearted woman and seeing such pitiful man always makes her feel pity. That is why she helps him.

But even so, the dumb mute was not the only one she gives filial pity. There are others like the dumb mute, and thus she couldn’t entertain or try to contact the dumb mute.

The Dumb Mute who got the bread ate it immediately. It was hard, and certainly not that appetizing compared to the soft bread of his past world. But even so, it was tasty enough for him, and his condition isn’t really that great he just can complain about some hard bread. He even eats organs and heats them up on torches. That is why the dumb mute can only steel his stomach.

Currently, he is still sitting on the main streets. He felt stared everywhere, and even though it is painful for him to be looked at. Ramiel, the dumb mute endured while trying not to imagine what the passersby are saying. Even he could understand that the people around him look at him as a pathetic beggar.

He understood it greatly. Even though the people around him call him a dumb mute, it doesn’t mean that he really is. It is just that being transported into an other world without any gifts, or sudden ability to speak the language of the land put Ramiel into this state.

Without any ability to communicate and understand, Ramiel can only act like this. No one would teach him; the world isn’t that kind to teach some dumb mute how to understand words. Only a few people might able to do so, but even with that, they wouldn’t bother to waste their time towards Ramiel.

Ramiel stared at the sky. Clouds that look like flowers and a bird that he doesn’t recognize reflect upon his eyes. It has been a month since he arrived here. He doesn’t know how and why he was put into this world. Ramiel thinks that this is some unlucky event. He never believed that something like this would happen. And if there is one thing that he could wish that have happened. It would be that he was able to understand the words of the land.

Looking down back at the streets, Ramiel continued his begging. It is pathetic and unsightly, but even so, he got used to this kind of life. It wasn’t because he adopts quickly, but because he has no choice to do so.

“Fucking beggar get out of my way.”

A man carrying a sword on his waist kicked Ramiel in the face. Ramiel fell back, his face colliding with a small pool of water. Coughing blood, and spitting out of the water out of his mouth. Ramiel regains his position, wiped the dirt and blood off his mouth and continued begging as if nothing happened.

Endure, endure, me...

Ramiel’s mind focused on that one single thing. His heart aches, his shoulder trembling, but even so he raises his palms up and continued begging for pity.

...

The sun was up in the sky, and the begging Ramiel moved out of the main streets. He avoided the wrath of the soldiers patrolling and went to the river near the town. In this river, he could drink the water. It is crystal clear, and you can see the bottom of the river. Ramiel sees the fishes down the water, and once he thought he could fish. But sadly, without any fishing pole or bait, the act of fishing was lost on him.

Ramiel wasn’t learned on how to do such things. He was an average young man, who graduated high school, and stayed years depressed on his parents’ home. He never had to work, and the life of comfort made him lazy. Hence, now he finds himself in this foreign land unable to do anything other than beg.

Ramiel cupped his hand and drink more water. After that, he sat near the river, which usually doesn’t have that many people since they fear that monsters and beasts would come to swipe them. In fact, despite the town of Tal being a rich hub for the Kingdom of Lin. There isn’t really a wall that separates it from the wilderness since doing so would cut the river that passes through the town.

That is why they never bothered to build a wall, but instead placed soldiers outside the town, hunting down monsters and beasts. But anyway, this bank is Ramiel safe haven. During the day, he would stay here and stare at the river to ease his mind. As a beggar, he never really had that much of a choice on what to do. There is no one to talk to, everyone avoids him for his nickname around the town, and that he knows that his existence is a bother to people.

That is why in this river he is at peace. But even so, this river turns into a nightmare at night, so he only stays here during daylight, while he then sleeps in the makeshift shelter of his back in the slums.
