Chapter 14 – Swollen Throat

Chapter 14 –  Swollen Throat

----------------------------------------

Last week of the Winter Season, specifically two days before the new cycle comes in. Ramiel, who was tired from his work, woke up with an enlarged lymph node on his throat. The first thing he felt was a pain in his gums, and then he was unable to swallow without experiencing pain on his throat.

He first thought why such thing appeared but then he remembered that he was feeding on thrown away organs for a good whole month. As someone who has never been that resistant to diseases. Obviously, the consequences of eating those almost rotten organs would finally show up.

It’s painful. Looks like this is what I got after eating those things. I guess this is an infection. The problem now is where to get some cure for this. This isn’t the modern world where I can just go to a doctor for a checkup when I have the money. Or buy some antibiotics on a pharmacy.

In this world, medicine hasn’t really progressed that much. With the use of healing spells, most of the healers or priest doesn’t have the mind to progress medicine. Alchemy, on the other hand, is limited on healing potions, curing poison or transforming metal to gold.

The art of Science is stuck on a bottleneck in this world. Not many rely on such arts, especially when you have oracles, priests, and magic around to rely on.  Complacency is a common fault of any humans even in this world. They rely too much on their magic, and never on how to do it without it.

Now what I am going to do? Ramiel thought. He isn’t a person of science either. He has been away from any education institution. So all those knowledge he learned from high school is almost forgotten by him now. He is an average person, after all, it is to be expected he would sooner forget. It’s not like he is some kind of amazing person that would somehow memorize the periodic table, know his element and then somehow recognize materials or recreate them.

He knows the materials but it doesn’t mean he can make one. It’s like wanting to create a gun. Ramiel might know the shape of a gun. But will he know the right parts, how it is shaped, where to get bullets, and the other small parts needed?

No, that is wishful thinking. Ramiel obviously wouldn’t know anything nor does he have the skill to make on. So talking about creating any sort of things from the modern world is impossible at best.

He can probably cook some basic modern food. Pancake, eggs, meat and that kind of stuff, but for complicated things like medicine; he won’t have any single clue. It worries him that he isn’t some genius. And with the lymph node on his throat bulging, Ramiel could not help but smile wearily and remind himself to never eat organs again.

Unlike in his world where the animals at least get vaccinated and sterilized, this world has none of that.

...

Ramiel went down the stairs to begin his work. Felli was the first one on the floor. She wakes up much earlier to prepare the Inn. Not only that the customers who are staying at the Inn would like their breakfast. It is also the time where Felli tries to persuade the customers by stomach on to come back to her Inn.

Felli, in every early morning, prepares various dishes she learned from her time being a caravan master. This morning, in particular, she is cooking a dish well known in the East. A dish made by stuffing a duck, then roasting it. Currently, she is in the process of roasting. Ramiel was about to wrapped the white cloth around his waist when Felli managed to take a glance at his neck.

“Wait,” Felli said.

Ramie understood that word. So he tilted his head towards Felli and gestured what is wrong. Felli obviously knows Ramiel still can’t understand her. So she pointed on his neck. Ramiel got what she meant and scratched his head on how to tell her.

Felli then grabs her chin and thought. An idea came to her head, so she removes her gloves, touched Ramiel’s neck and muttered words incomprehensible to Ramiel. As he mutters, particles of light gathered on her hand, and in her palm, a ball of light appeared. Moving her palm towards the swollen neck of Ramiel, she tried to heal Ramiel’s swollen lymph node only to find out that it isn’t healing.

I wonder what this? It is not a wound, nor is it got hurt by something blunt...thought Felli, in wonder at Ramiel’s wound.

Ramie shook his hands and gestured that he is okay. Felli got what he meant but gestured him to wrap his swollen throat with something. Ramiel really didn’t get why, but nonetheless, he did what he was gestured to do.

Felli for now put aside the swollen throat of Ramiel. She doesn’t know what it really is and judging how okay Ramiel is. She felt that it isn’t that much of a big deal. Or she hopes.

She rather not thought that he got some unknown disease. Even worse, her customers might think that her worker is serving food while having such swollen throat. She doesn’t want to think that it is harmful, so she ordered Ramiel to cover it up.

As for why the basic healing spell didn’t work on him. She really doesn’t know. But as it stands, healing spells works by accelerating the regeneration process of the target’s wound. Ramiel’s wound isn’t really a ‘wound’ and is more of a natural infection. So obviously the lump on Ramiel’s throat wouldn’t heal. But if Felli managed to configure her healing spell to target the infection that occurred on Ramiel’s throat. Then the possibility of it being cured would be high.

But as it stands, Felli isn’t really that capable as a mage. Aside from being good at handling a sword, she isn’t that proficient in the arts of magic. Thus Ramiel’s problem for his throat is a mystery at the moment.
