Chapter 110 - Work
----------------------------------------
Peronell and Ramiel bantered all noon. It took a grumpy stomach to make Peronell leave. Ramiel didn’t quite hate her, and there was something about her that made Ramiel feel like he forgot some things. He thought about that feeling but discarded it as he returns to his usual spot in the fireplace. Ramiel liked the fireplace for the warm sensation that permeates on his body, which makes Ramiel feel comfortable.
Even though he is in pain, Ramiel who got sadly used to it, felt relaxed. The wood burning, the pot that is placed on top of the fireplace boiling, and the way the embers rise and vanishes made Ramiel feel strangely empty. He watched the flames move, hugging his knees, Ramiel tugged his head from left to right.
A footstep echoed outside.
Turning his neck out, he saw the medium size figure of Pablo entering.
“What’s up, Pablo?”
“I got your ale, my man, where’s your gourd?”
“I ain’t got the money, so peace for now.”
“Don’t worry this can be my treat, my friend. I imagine that Peronell has been annoying you? I can hear you two bantering at my Inn.” Pablo smiled.
“Well, if she isn’t doing it to kick me out of my house then I would have found her charming...that bitch.”
“Haha, forgive cousin, she has the temper of a child.”
Saying that, Pablo took the gourd of ale, he pulled the cork and started to fill it with ale. The liquid fell down like a faucet, and after the gourd was full. Pablo handed it to Ramiel.
“There you go.”
“Thank you Pablo...even though I do not have the money.”
“Don’t mention it brother, you are a friend of mine now that you live in the village. And besides, if you want work you can always check on me. I can have you fetch things or kill some pests for some gold.”
“You do that?”
“Yeah I do, the folks around here or the soldiers in the encampment a few yards away from this village put request. They say that it is too tiresome to take them on when they are watching the trail for bandits, so they usually leave it to us.”
“Is that so?”
“We have no problem with it.” Pablo sat on the floor cross-legged, putting his hand on his thigh. “The gold is best, and it is a good way to have the guards, or the fighting folks here to move. I take on some requests when I have time, but mostly before you arrive, Abby was the only one dealing with these tasks. You should try it brother, it pays too, can put food on your table, but I am not going to pretend there isn’t any danger.”
“Work huh...maybe I could use one...I really don’t have anything to do, and being penniless is rather depressing.”
“True that brother, besides I think you can handle yourself well man. Some few wandering goblins shouldn’t kill you.”
Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.
“Very well, I will think about it.”
“Good, see you later brother, I got to man the Inn, peace.”
Pablo stood up and went back to his Inn.
With him gone, Ramiel reclined on the carpeted floor and thought about taking some work.
...
The next day, Ramiel woke up with a wanting to take work. He went up from his bed and started dressing himself up. His leather armor that is a bit weary, his boots, his capelet, his leather pouches, and the leg brace he spent a fortune to buy.
Armed and ready, Ramiel went out of his house and head towards Pablo’s Inn.
As Ramiel was out, the ever dedicated Peronell went inside her former house and spoke of insults only to find out that Ramiel was not in, making a fool of herself.
Back to Ramiel, he went and took on a single request from Pablo. It was simply a request to a kill two goblins who have been camping near the walls of the village. The two goblins are located in the woods, near the mountainside, just beneath a cave opening that can’t be reached without a ladder.
Ramiel found the goblins near their campfire. They seemed to be cooking two skinned rabbits they hunted. For the goblins, they have red skinned and have two protruding horns. Ramiel was at a distance, just behind a giant tree, that has a bit of flower blooming on its leaves. This was Ramiel’s effective range, so he lifted two of his hands, took a deep breath as his veins appeared on his hand.
With Ramiel’s condition, he is overtaxing himself just by casting. So when casting two spells at once, and with his low mana capacity, it can be said that this is making a toll on him.
But Ramiel didn’t stop as he forms two images on his mind. The first image, he casted a helmet made of barrier, extending around the goblin’s neck as the goblin leans on the campfire’s smoke. The second image, he casted a ring like barrier on one of the goblin’s neck.
As the helmet-like barrier appeared, the goblin that was leaning started coughing as the smoke chokes the goblin. The other goblin, who Ramiel casted a barrier on the neck, started clawing the barrier, trying to remove it. Ramiel didn’t want the barrier to break soon, so he slightly changed the image of the barrier to a spiked choker, but instead of the spikes pointing away from the neck, Ramiel made the spikes dig into the goblin’s neck, killing the goblin.
As the other goblin was dead, Ramiel took a glance at the other one. The Goblin who he casted with a helmet like barrier was trying to break the barrier by using his club, but since the smoke was choking the goblin, the goblin quickly loses its strength and died.
Ramiel didn’t want to take chances so he extended the blade of his right bracer, and stab it in the goblin’s neck. With blood coming out, and the goblins not moving, Ramiel went and collected their fingers as a proof that they have been slain.
Putting the fingers into a pouch, Ramiel immediately evacuated the area, returning to the village.
