Chapter 163

Chapter 163

Mark, Natasha, the two mages Aldeen and Lossa, and the rest of the guards returned to where the villagers were hiding. They needed to be informed that the village was now safe and that the Wyverns were vanquished so they could start rebuilding their homes.

When they arrived at the villager’s hiding place, Natasha spoke with the village chief and informed them that they could go home. The villagers cheered and started packing to go home. The mages wanted to leave immediately to report their mission completion, but Natasha and the other guards wanted to stay for a little while to assist the villagers.

Mark told everyone that he would follow Natasha’s lead and that shut up the mages. A couple of children were sick and Lossa admitted that he knew the spell “Cure Wounds” and since he didn’t get the chance to use it during the battle, it was used to heal the sick children.

The group helped the villagers carry their things back to their village. When they got there, everybody got busy in fixing their homes. Mark wanted to help but he really didn’t know what to do so he asked Natasha for guidance. The guard captain led Mark to the village chief to ask if they could help with something.

Hubbard, the village chief mentioned that since it was nearing evening, it would be best if they could assist in fixing and cleaning the village hall so they could stay there for the night and Natasha agreed.

It only took an hour for Mark and his group to fix the village hall since it was not that big, then Mark asked the guards to help him set up the table where he could serve food.

While they were eating, the group heard knocking on the door and when one of the guards opened it, they saw that the village chief brought a basket of bread. Natasha invited the old man inside since it was cold.

“I brought you bread for your dinner, but I can see that you don’t need it.”

Mark saw that Hubbard was eyeing their dinner and he couldn’t blame the old man since their feast looked good enough to be served on a noble’s table according to the mages.

“Old man Hubbard, please join us. As you can see there’s plenty of food.” Mark stood up and offered his seat to the village chief, and then he summoned another one from his inventory.

At first, the old man kept on declining, but his eyes never left the food on the table, and with much persuasion, Hubbard joined their dinner.

The meal passed quickly, and old man Hubbard kept saying that he had never eaten food so good before in his life and all of the guards nodded agreeing with the old chief.

“I’m glad you like it. What about the other villager’s situation? You mentioned earlier that the Wyvern had eaten all of the livestock. Will your people suffer this winter?”

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

The old village chief laughed.

“Are you worried that we would get hungry? You don’t need to worry about us. We have a lot of grain stored and that will keep us till spring and then we could get new livestock by then. The forest will also provide us with bountiful food even in the depths of the winter. The only problem that we have right now is the children of the two people who died.”

“What do you mean by that?” Mark asked the village chief.

“The children of the two people who died were twins and they’re only six years old. Normally anyone in here would take care of those kids but this place and its people are very superstitious. They keep claiming that the twins summoned the Wyvern disaster and if they stay here, they will summon another disaster eventually.”

“That’s absurd!” Mark exclaimed.

“Unfortunately, isolated villages are very superstitious, and you will not be able to change their mind once they decide on something. If those orphans stay here, they will live a hard life.”

“Once spring arrives, I’m planning to bring them to the orphanage in the city, but the other villagers kept on asking me to ask you if you can take them immediately.”

Mark was really irritated about the superstitious behavior of the villagers.

“We will take them to the city with us, so you don’t need to worry. I saw them earlier. They were the sick boy and girl that Lossa healed earlier right?”

“Yes. Thank you for bringing them to the city. It’s about time for me to leave. I’ll bring the kids and their belongings here tomorrow before you leave.”

The old village chief left. Natasha then turned to Mark and smiled.

“Look at you deciding to bring those orphans with us without asking me.”

Mark realized that he just decided to bring the kids with them without asking for Natasha’s permission and blushed.

“I’m sorry. It’s just that this type of behavior just makes me angry.”

Natasha and the rest laughed.

“You don’t have to apologize. We would be bringing them with us when we leave anyway even if you have not decided on it since it’s our city’s policy regarding orphans.”

“That’s a good policy! I didn’t expect to find something like that here.” Mark said to Natasha, surprised.

“What do you think of us, barbarians?”

Mark apologized again and everyone just laughed.

Everyone then prepared their bedding to sleep.

“I prefer my RV,” Mark commented while preparing the bedding they would use for sleep.

“What’s an RV?” Ardeen asked.

“The huge caravan where we slept when we were on the road.”

“Oh yes. The bed was soft and clean, and the heat was comfortable. You can go to the toilet whenever you want, and the water is warm.” Natasha said.

“It’s just for one night. You can use it again Lord Mark once we are on the road.” Lossa added.

Everyone then slept but Mark couldn’t, so he took his smartphone from his Inventory to read a stored web novel. When Natasha saw the small device, she curiously asked what it was, and Mark explained to her that it was a device that his homeland was using to communicate with each other, but it wouldn’t work in this place since it lacked the central rune that was floating high above the air that would make the device work. He explained to the guard captain that he could only use it to read novels, watch shows, or play games.

“You can watch shows on these tiny things? What do you mean to play games?”

Mark saw that the mages and even the rest of the guards were watching them, so he showed everyone his smartphone and even played a short video clip. He also played a game for a minute to show Natasha and the rest of the group.
