Avrin placed the sack down and frowned as he looked at the beast. It had almost pierced through his head which would have killed him in an instant and he was not going to let it get away especially since it was worth quite a bit. Though looking at it he saw the moonlight sparkle across its scales, yet its screeching like a harpy was enough to make one no longer admire its beauty and simply want to stomp it to death.
Avrin didn't move but he took a defensive stance, this stance was commonplace within the white dragon clan. Avrin could not simply attack it as he wanted to catch it alive. While he took his defensive stance he began to gather dark matter under his feet and into the ground.
The Silver Scaled Beaker carefully began to pace back and forth causing its body to wiggle almost like a worm. Two minutes had gone by and yet Avrin had not moved an inch. The creature was beginning to grow hungry and impatient, it no longer wanted to wait and shot towards Avrin again intending to go for his legs this time to cut off his retreat and gain a level advantage, its small arms, despite their size, were quite strong as it let the creature dig its claws in and then shoot like a miniature rocket while spiraling towards Avrin.
Dirt kicked up behind the creature as it fired its body towards him like an arrow, though Avrin simply glanced with some disdain as he curved his right foot downward before swiftly kicking with a controlled amount of force upward. The kick smacked the bottom of the creature's jaw, the vibration caused by the attack rattled its mind a bit and the power of the kick also launched several meters. All of this was done precisely from an onlookers perspective.
But Avrin was not done, he waved his hand as nebula mist surged from it and soon the ground split as a large mist shot upward and engulfed the creature that began to wriggle around in fright and anger. Despite how much it struggled it was not able to free itself in mid air, this allowed the nebula mist around it to take shape, and soon a large glowing purple cage was formed around it. The creature began to smack against the cage but it was small enough to not allow it to build momentum. Avrin knew it would be troublesome if he gave it room.
The creature began to screech with anger, as it opened its beak and began to gnaw on the cage. “Will you shut up...” Avrin reached up and grabbed the ring holder at the top of the cage and started shaking the cage until the creature grew quiet and dizzy, no longer daring to make a sound.
Avrin then turned and walked back a step before reaching down to grab the sack filled with materials, he then turned and looked up, at this time it was nearing 5 in the morning. Calculating his time to reach the village from here he would be there by 8 or 9 which could be considered perfect for most merchants to open up shop. He soon left and began to make his way towards the direction of the village while following his hearing, though this led him to take a small detour.
By now he had enough dark matter to fully reform his attire, and his hood was covering his head. He didn't expect to meet people here and was grateful because converting his body at this point would use a bit of dark matter and was dangerous due to the recovery and inexperience.
Avrin quietly sat down on a small boulder as he shut his eyes for a moment to see how his recovery was fairing, though he couldn't enter his inner workings still. “-Perfect, I should be able to reach a preferable state in no time if I continue this up. My physical strength should be as strong as someone at the Master level, but this is just external, my particles still need to recover all their energy. At that point I should be able to reach the Sage level in both ability and strength and after that I will be back to my original strength in no time at all. Though why do I feel as if something has changed, I feel lighter and stronger than I was at the Master level, interesting-”
Avrin suddenly turned his head in the direction left of him and spotted several orange lights making their way in this direction, his eyes narrowed, but nebula mist covered his face before it reformed into the shape of a plain mask with durability no less than iron yet was as light as plastic, it perfectly fit over his face and covered it well with the cloak.
At that moment a group of 10 individuals came out from the bushes in a bunch, consisting of 3 girls and 7 males. “Big brother I told you it's strange...we haven't found anything for awhile and you want us to go near the inner parts? It's too strange and we shouldn't go there.” a soft sweet sounding voice from a short haired green female wearing simple leather attire with a short sword on her waist spoke with some dissatisfaction and a pouty face.
Though as they were walking, the male she spoke to had a serious expression as if he were contemplating something, he seemed to be in his early 30’s with a short black beard and combed black hair as well as a scar across the bridge of his nose. His attire consisted of some plate and chain with the remainder being leather, he had a longsword on his back and was holding up a torch.
The rest of the people following close behind and chatting also wore similar attire and seemed at ease while some at the flank and rear of the group seemed on watch and looked with caution. The man holding the torch and the brother of the female who had seemed dissatisfied suddenly stopped as he quickly held his torch forward, he spotted a dark figure several meters in front and entered a battle stance as he spoke.
“Show yourself!” in a quick moment everyone grew tense as they knew this forest was dangerous. They quickly unsheathed their weapons and got in a formation known to them, 2 of the females as well as a male stood in the back and held out their hands at the same time runic circles began to hover across their wrists as if they were preparing to attack.
“Hmm.” Avrin raised his head and glanced at the man in front carefully eyeing them curiously. Both sides were silent, it was only when the silver scaled beaker began to screech and try to move about in the cage that Avrin turned to look at it and gave the cage a soft kick. “I said shut up...” At this point the female by her brother’s side gazed with awe. “T...that’s a Silver Scaled Beaker!! Brother that's exactly what Lady Missla wanted!” speaking as if the creature was already hers she wiggled a bit causing her fairly proportional bust to jiggle slightly.
The man eyed Avrin for a few more moments, he saw that avrin was alone yet still managed to capture a silver scaled beaker which would pose a great risk for even them. He released his grip on the long sword that remained on his back and then showed a tough smile as he looked at Avrin.
“Sorry about that friend, I thought you were something else.” the man seemed oddly friendly all of a sudden but Avrin knew from the words of the girl this creature was something they wanted so he didn't bother to incline in small chat. “Make an offer.” he spoke a simple phrase.
“Offer?” the girl tilted her head a little confused, and the others behind her seemed to look confused as well as they looked at each other. The man at the front stood clueless for a moment before he gave a heavy laugh. “Ah, mister you seem to have keen foresight, ok since we are in a rush for a gift how about 1 unclouded crystal?”
Avrin snickered behind his mask. “I would have settled for 3 but because you tried to rip me off so badly I want 5 now..” Avrin showed no mercy as he still casually sat on the rock, of course the creature in the cage was afraid Avrin would shake it again so it didn't dare speak make a sound.
Though hearing Avrin’s offer the man felt a little miserable as he was about to speak one of the girls from the back who seemed to be a mage felt anger in her heart and roared out towards avrin. “You!! How dare you, you are speaking to a captain of the Anzazia Mercenary Group!! Now show him some face and take captain Lev’s offer!”
Avrin raised up both hands and and held up six fingers. “Give face? What the hell is that? It sounds perverted, regardless thank blabbermouth over there because I want 6 now!”. A small commotion broke out in the group and Lev felt his face pale a little, a tall man behind him who looked like a rogue whispered among the group. “I say we just beat him to a pulp and take it...”
Lev hearing this took a deep breath. “Mister, I apologize for my subordinates words and my attempts at swindling you. I'll be honest with you, I have a total of 8 unclouded crystals with me, I hope that by telling you this it shows my honesty towards you and that you will give me a fair price.”
Avrin smiled, he could demand it all but he knew the man didn't take uneccesary action, looking at them all Avrin felt their strengths their levels ranged from beginner to a few being trained. As for Lev, Avrin felt his mana matched that of a mid level trained individual nearing the peak, but he could tell by a glance this man had battle instinct and most likely feared avrin because of his ability to capture a silver scaled beaker on his own without assistance.
“Do you have any information books?” Avrin suddenly spoke, Lev suddenly spoke after hearing Avrin. “Lisa” his sister who was seemingly excited yet nervous quickly rushed to the back of the group where an individual was carrying a large backpack, she shuffled through it before pulling out 8 books and returning in confusion, she stood beside Lev as she held the books. “Mister I'm not sure why you need books but I have 8 as you can see, they range from a creature encyclopedia describing those from the trained level to the master level. I also have some common reading material about our country and also a book that describes, Sigil Crafting.”
Almost immediately after hearing the final word Avrin quickly spoke. “Give me 3 unclouded crystals and give me the books and you can have this thing” Avrin softly kicked the cage again which made the beaker screech silently.
Lev sighed in relief before nodding, after a few moments Avrin was going over the book describing sigil crafting while Lev’s sister Lisa was holding and glancing at the beaker which was gnawing on one of the dark matter bars. “After 10 more hours the magic holding the cage will vanish,” Avrin spoke before he placed the books in the sack and placed it over his shoulder.
Lev glanced at Avrin and stepped in front of him before extending his hand out. “Friend I didn't get your name, anyone who can handle a Silver Scale on their own definitely has some metal of worth, what is your name?”
Avrin looked at his hand and then extended his own before clasping onto Lev’s hand, though the others were gazing at the Beaker some were glancing at Lev and Avrin with curiosity though if they looked closely several veins around Lev’s arms and forehead bulged as he tried to grip around Avrin’s hand with all his strength but he felt as if he couldn't make him budge at all, as if he were attempting to forcefully crush a steel ingot it was simply impossible with his strength.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
“-Strong...-” Lev thought as he smiled, Avrin simply glanced through the eye holes of the mask with indifference to him Lev’s grip was simply a firm handshake and he didn't even know he was attempting to test his strength until he saw his expression.
“Avrin.” he spoke. Lev then let go of Avrin’s hand and nodded. “Avrin hopefully we can encounter each other again, you gave me a good deal today” he then turned to head towards his group. Lisa glanced at Avrin and looked at him curiously she could see his eyes were glowing blue, and she wasn't sure why but she felt her soul shake and body quiver faintly. It made her turn a soft shade of red before turning around and walking off to follow the rest of the group that intended to go forward.
Avrin didn't linger around anymore as he still had things to sell, he held his hand out and had 3 index finger nail sized crystals, these looked like haze crystals but these crystals had more mist inside of them and were somewhat clearer. Avrin continued to walk and placed one in his mouth and swallowed it.
As soon as it slid down his throat his body couldn't wait and the crystal wasn't even able to enter his stomach before it was melted down and converted into dark matter that was absorbed into the walls of his esophagus.
Avrin felt a fresh feeling and gave a soft breath that was cold enough to cause a mist to appear, “Strangely leaves a sweet minty aftertaste.“ Avrin felt that this crystal was significantly more appealing than the haze crystals it made him wonder about the higher ranked crystals if they tasted this fresh and appealing he may simply devour these things. Even though he doesn't need to eat it made his tastebuds tingle.
Several hours later as Avrin left he noticed more and more groups of adventurers making their way inside the forest as well as some who had already begun to set up a small camp. Avrin figured at this time many would start their day by preparing to hunt beasts to sell at the villages special trade market where lucent crystals were used as currency instead of coins.
Some gazed strangely at the black cloaked avrin who with one hand held a full stitched bag on his back while with the other was holding a book to do with sigil crafting. “-It seems it's not anything special nor unique to them. The method of creating this seems simple enough, but something like this is definitely interesting. Sigil crafting is simply an emblem etched with countless runes and symbols to form a sigil, though each set of symbols and rune engravings represents a certain equipment ranging from amulets, armor and weapons. Mmm again it needs mana? Nonsense, it shouldn't be an issue for me to mimic it with dark matter, this could be a good step for me to begin until I have a source of lucent crystals.-”
As Avrin walked out of the forest he followed a set path, he shut the book and glanced forward, from this area he was able to see the open area even better than at Calomia’s home. He could see merchant caravans going back and forth from a small outpost just outside of the forest heading towards the direction of the village, Avrin ignored this and simply went on his way.
The landscape could be said to be quite pristine, open plains with farmland as well as wooden palisades spanning around a soft perimeter around a bit of the forest to keep certain areas free from creatures. Of course this place seemed to be big for people to make money from so it meant that food needed to be acquired which brought a need for farms to be made closer.
As Avrin continued down the path he felt a little nostalgia, he remembered when he broke out of the sylph forest and explored out to his first town, the current feeling was as if he were redoing that journey but he no longer feared being threatened by anyone. He doubted there was anyone around here at the high god level or above, to his knowledge this part of the landmass was a backwater area.
Avrin was tinkering around with a small mass of dark matter in his hand, it was shaped like an octagon and he willed random runes to be etched into it to form what was needed, right now he was carefully willing the dark matter and giving it orders. He was now able to communicate with the particles of dark matter formed by energy outside of his body and not just inside, making things much more useful for him. He held the 2 inch wide and 2 inch tall octagon that was as thick as a thumb he carefully examined it, right now it was simply using his will to program the dark matter but it wouldn't mean much if only he could use it.
Right now the sigil he had created was quite simple, it had an obsidian look to it and seemed quite sturdy, though since he intended to sell these he would need a symbol. He began to tinker around with the makeshift sigil and had formed a rough eight-pointed star with the inside being a soft shade of purple while it was outlined by a black color. Using dark matter, he had a circle made around it that was dotted precisely every few centimeters, and from there he took inspiration from his dark matter cores’ surroundings. He had a large sphere in the middle of the symbol, and connected to that sphere were four lines that connected to two medium sized spheres and two smaller sized spheres which had three dots lined in front of them.
(A.N: Please refer to Spectral Regalias cover, the symbol on the mask is the symbol used on the sigil )
Avrin had a simple solution for the issue regarding dark matter not being able to be felt by anyone other than Spectrals. He pulled out an unclouded lucent crystal and within moments the sigil shot sharp veins towards the crystal and impaled it; however, it didn't devour it. Soon the sigil began to draw in mana, seemingly pumping it from the crystal. Finally, the crystal was then swallowed by the sigil to become the core. Now when Avrin looked at the sigil he created, it looked like a genuine sigil. The sigil would slowly feed from the crystal, only enough to keep itself sustained. As a safeguard, the moment someone tries to tinker with it or extract the crystal Avrin had ordered the particles to simply self destruct.
“Trigger” he spoke and in a moment the sigil morphed in his hand and formed into a foot long dagger. It took the shape of a dark matter weapon with the lucent crystal encrusted within its hilt. “Trigger necklace” he spoke again and the weapon condensed and reformed back into a necklace with the lucent crystal set in the pendant. “Trigger ring” the sigil once more transformed, this time into a ring with the crystal set at the top like an overgrown diamond with a few dark veins to bind it in place.
“That should be it for now.” Avrin at first silently questioned his ability to easily recreate something like this. He remembered God speaking about his god’s heart and its powers of creation.. When Avrin pondered on that piece of information, it didn't seem so surprising. He knew that he had a lot to learn, and that he wasn't able to recreate different types of energy, mana for instance, but he was satisfied for now. He stowed the sigil and stopped where a bend in the road and a break in the trees allowed him to overlook the village ahead. Of Course this also had the potential to cause issues in the future.
The village of Roth was established along a broad river that spanned hundreds of miles in either direction, connecting the ocean to the large lake of the city that could be seen at the edge of the horizon. The village was neither rich nor poor and was fairly average with a population of a couple thousand. Its houses were built from wood and stone and included some fairly common shops such as butchers and small book shops. The village was divided into several sections. The southern portion of the village was the poorer part of the village with homes built simply from wood, and was the section Calomia had previously made a living in helping.
The northern section, which contained a larger bulk of buildings, were all made out of carved stone, and were decently made with more care. The paths leading across the village were well maintained gravel, likely left over from carving the stones for the houses.
Connected to the northern section was a walled-off elliptical section that was over 400 meters long and 100 meters wide. The walls around this area were all higher than even those protecting the village, they manned by guards adorned in scaled uniform armor with a simple grey shield emblazoned with two swords crossed under a shield. Each guard had a careful look, as if they didn't dare not be cautious.
This heavily guarded section was the market. The houses near the market section were all small mansions, and each one well made. In this village being closer to the marketplace was seen as a sign of prosperity and riches.
The market’s main entrance was marked by heavy gates, rich adornments, and the long line of buyers waiting to pass inspection. Away from the main entrance, a wider, less fanciful gate was manned with several more guards who were currently inspecting carriages of merchants wanting to sell their wares and peddle goods.
The merchant line was more efficient, and the line contained only three people, one with a carriage and two others who were carrying backpacks filled with goods. The guard inspecting a parchment containing a list of the goods furrowed his brow, he had a ragged, gritty look with a shaven face but a serious expression, the guard scratched his head and spoke after rolling up the parchment.
“You're all clear, pay the fee of 2 haze crystals or something of equal value and then enter.” The merchant didn't bother to linger as he led the small, 3-horned, bull-like creature (that was nearly double the size of a normal bull) to continue on in with the small carriage that definitely had a fair amount of goods within.
Avrin had arrived on time and was silently waiting in line, with his mask on, and the sack slung over his right shoulder. “-The price seems fair-” he spoke. The guard continued and faced the two individuals who were next and spoke. “List your category of goods or hand me a manifest” his answer seemed generic but it was spoken as if he had done it thousands of times. The two people simply handed the guard a parchment, and after some time the guard rolled the parchment and handed it back then repeated the same words he spoke to the merchant with the small carriage.
Soon as the two peddlers entered after paying the fee Avrin walked up and the guard who seemed bored glanced at him, though the moment he looked at Avrin he felt his body quiver a little. He was not sure why but he felt an urge to be somewhat more respectful. “Morning sir, list your category of goods or allow me to see a manifest.”
Avrin didn't bother wasting time and spoke. “Creature materials as well as a sigil.” The guard was a little stunned, a sigil could only be made by people who not only had a special talent for controlling mana but learnt a special magic that allowed them to combine the mana with materials to create a sigil, the materials varied depending on the sigil needed.
“Very good sir, usually merchants have manifests but by seeing you don’t I’m assuming your new? Hehe for a small price I’m willing to share some information if you are willing?” Avrin smirked silently behind his mask this guard. Of course he wouldn't leave a chance to make a small profit.
Avrin brought the sack out and pulled out one of the materials he had obtained from a creature. “I don't have any lucent crystals but will monster materials do?” Avrin pulled out one of the small leaf crystals he had taken from one of the creatures he killed earlier.
“Of course!” the guard happily accepted it and then looked around, he glanced at one of his fellow guards who then approached and handed a small booklet that had seemingly been prepared before. The guard handed it to Avrin and began to speak. “Since you are new I will explain some unspoken rules, the upper sections of the market are usually reserved for those merchants with more reputation than others, despite being a small village we have some shops from the three big players in this country, although they are minor minor branches they are still something; the Spring Institute, Artificer Consortium and the Highland Syndicate.”
Avrin was a little confused “I'm not from this region, can you tell me about these three establishments?” the guard in charge of things was stunned. He had never in his 30 years as a guard, and even 20 years as chief inspector,, seen nor heard of anyone who didn't know of these powerhouses.
