Vol.25 Ch.568 - a fairy's job is never done

After that, it had already gotten pretty dark out, so we opted to quickly go back to our homes and sleep. In the morning, we were greeted to a fresh new and sunny day, the tropical air greeting us with a refreshing scent flowing all the way from our nostrils to our lungs. And yes, I said "we".

"Good morning, Nelly." Showa bowed her head lightly, just as she did before, "Did you sleep well?"

"Now that I really stop to think about it after the fact..." I rubbed my Eyes, "Was there really a need for you to sleep here with me? Of course, we had the top bunk free and all, but still—Isn't your family worried you didn't show up home last night?"

"They're not." She assured me, "It's not like I can go far anyways. I don't know how to swim nor sail a boat."

"Really? You can't swim?" I almost let out a smirk, "For someone who can do all those cool and flashy moves in a fight, I'm surprised the ever reliable battle maiden can't do something as simple as swimming."

"I can hunt fish in the shallows just fine, so I never had a reason to go farther than that." She explained, "That being said, I'm not completely useless when placed in the water. I can doggy paddle just fine."

Doggy paddle, she said! This girl just never misses with the cuteness! But to think such a perfect woman exists in this land, who's both reliable in being a bodyguard as well as having a cute poet girl personality. Then add the cute face, White hair with striking Red Eyes and her half-naked daily attire... Yep, safe to say there's no guy who wouldn't want her! Heh, I can already imagine Lem's face when they meet! Oh wait...

"What's the matter? You aren't undressing as erotically as you did yesterday." She actually noticed something so miniscule.

"Is there a way to change into your clothes more or less erotically?" I cucked my head back.

"Very much so." She explained, "Yesterday, you went through the motions very slowly, practically teasing my Eyes with your display as you carefully pulled up your shirt, stuck your butt out as the pants just fell right off..."

"You don't have to go that into detail." I could feel my cheeks turning Red, "You seriously are a weirdo, damn."

"In any case, this time you just speedily put them on without any signs of emotion, staring into an empty dot in space as if lost in thought." She sighed, "Showed nothing, leaving even the entire concept of changing clothes to the imagination. Not good, zero out of ten."

So now I'm getting rated? Well excuse me for trying not to keep you waiting! Next time I should seriously go to the bathroom when I change. I just kinda felt like it'd be too much of a chore to do it if I don't have to.

"I am just preparing you for when Lem awakes." She said with a stern yet caring tone.

"I'll obviously go to another room when he comes to live here!" I shouted, "You think I'm some sort of pervert to be letting him see me like that?"

"I can't possibly know that." She went to leave the room, "Now, shall we go?"

"Go? Go where?"

"To visit him." She pointed, "Your friend Lem. Is that not what you do on a daily basis?"

She wants to visit him that badly? Geez, even I can hold off waiting for at least 24 hours before checking up on him. A-And I don't mean that in any weird way, mind you! Sigh, but still, I'm kind of worried all over again now after seeing her this eager over Lem. Also factor in the fact that she thinks he's handsome and cute, plus the little brother thing...

"Hrmm..." I mulled it over in my head for a bit before finding an excuse, "No, let's first go visit your family and tell them where you were. I don't like how uninformed we left them about it."

"I told you, they don't mind at all-"

"I wanna make a good first impression!" I kept being insistant about it, "The people of this island already have a difficult view on me, but at the very least, I'd like it if your family didn't think of me as a kidnapper."

"I'm older than you." She explained, "And I'm an adult."

"Well, "adultnapping" isn't a term in any dictionary I know of so bear with me for now." I groaned, "Come on, lead me to your house. It may not mean much for you, or even maybe your family for that matter, but it sure as hell means a lot to me. Think of it as another example of our cultures' differences."

"Will we ever find common ground on this topic of cultures?" She rolled her Eyes, "It feels like you're just making stuff up at this point."

"Aren't all traditions made up?"

"Fair enough."

And so, we left the house and made sure to lock it twice. Not that it meant much, since if anyone really wanted to steal stuff, they could just as easily break the windows and enter that way, but I'd at least like to forbid anyone from outright entering through an unlocked door. Plus, Meil would always chew me out whenever I forgot to lock the door back home, so I just kinda learned to always lock it.

"Oh my Gaaaawsh!" A small buck toothed little boy greeted us at the door before yelling to the other tenants, "Shou! Shell! Sis brought the Fairy!"

Immediately, the house erupted into screams of disbelief and excitement as two other boys around the same age and with similar features to this one came rushing in. It was quite the adorable sight, seeing their Eyes twinkle when they saw me standing next to Showa. They're quite young, but older than Cene. I'd say around ten or so.

"Miss Fairy! Is it true, is it true?!" One boy asked, short of breath, "Are you gonna grant us wishes if we behave?"

"I'm telling you, I was there when it happened!" The other one annoyedly replied, "Everyone got her magical sweets that day, and they tasted super good! You didn't believe me back then, so why are you suddenly asking her like you did!"

"Grrr, shut up, the both of you!" The third one got angry, "You're gonna end up on her naughty list if you keep yelling so loud!"

"Once again, Shou has the most reason." Showa patted him on the head, "Shell, Sharp, regardless of who's at the door, can you tell me what the proper way to greet them is?"

"To calmly introduce ourselves with a smile..." They sulked.

Ah, they were a bit loud (not like I cared), but it seems they have a disciplined side under it. Their parent's must have taught them well, cause they all seem to be very sweet. After this, they introduced themselves by age, starting with the most steadfast one, Shell, then the rowdies one, Sharp, and finally the youngest brother, Shou, who was the one Showa praised just now.

"They're triplets." Showa explained, "Though they can't be any more different in terms of personalities, sometimes it really does feel like they're a single little brother with how scarily similar they think."

"Yeah!" All three grinned in unison.

What a fun family! They seem to be enjoying themselves, ah, but I didn't come here just to meet them. I have a duty to fulfill as Showa's friend.

"Nice to meet you three, you're very sweet. Expect some presents in the coming future." I gave them a hearty smile before asking, "Now, can I ask where your parents are?"

Immediately, the air went quiet. Neither awkward nor said, to them I assume it was like I asked how the weather was, but it was their answer that made me wish I hadn't asked. The boys didn't even blink as they said it too, which really made it difficult to hear.

"Mom died when she gave birth to us." They still kept smiling innocently, "We don't remember our dad."

"Sorry, Nelly. I guess I forgot to mention this detail of our family." Showa sighed, "We don't have parents. Dad sailed away from the Archipelago around the time mom was pregnant, and he never came back."

"A-Ah, my condolences for your mother." I bit my tongue, "So, did your father make it?"

"How would I know?" She shrugged, "But I hope he did, cause that's all I can do. Well, that, and taking care of these little guys."

Hugging all three with a crouched hug and a hearty grin, I couldn't even begin to imagine how she could do it so easily. Though I certainly don't know her circumstances, the fact of the matter is that she lost both parents at a young age and had to take care of not one, not two, but three little boys at once. No wonder she's so strong and reliable, it was probably from taking care of them in their mother's stead. How noble, yet sad all the same.

"You three." I took Misfortune out, "What do you want the Fairy to give you? It doesn't have to be food, just imagine anything and I'll give it to you."

"Whoaaa~! Really!?" Sharp grinned from ear to ear, "Then I want a ball! Kicking a rock hurts my foot!"

Yeesh, I can imagine. Maybe I should get him some shoes as well while I'm at it, in that case. Not like he'd wear them, though.

"Here you are." I handed it to him.

"Ooh! Awesome!" Shell smiled, "Me next, me next!"

"Haha, what do you want?"

"Ice cream!" He said, "I didn't get to try it, so I want it all to myself this time!"

"Greedy!" Sharp gave him a sidelong glare as he kicked the ball around.

"Don't worry, there'll be enough to share and then some!" I summoned in an entire table, "By the way, be sure to brush your teeth after. Or at the very least wash them off with water."

"Yaaay!"

Phew! I'm really getting the hang of this Book! To think I had such a power for so long, but I completely slept on it! Geez, I could've been making people happy this entire time if only I had known about it.

"Well, whatver." I shrugged, "And you, Shou? What would you like?"

"...To meet my mom." He uttered quietly, "Just once, if possible."

"Shou!" Showa got fussy.

"But I wanna meet her!" He pleaded, "You keep telling us how awesome she is, and kind, and caring! But we never got to meet her, and I'm really sad about that! If the Fairy can grant any wish, then I'd like to be able to meet this person for myself!"

All the boys then turned to me expectantly, nervously waiting to hear my reply. It's a difficult request, and certainly a heavy one for a ten year old to be making, but it wasn't completely unexpected. As the responsible one of the three, I assume he must feel pretty guilty about their mother's death. Thankfully, the Book can revive people as well, so the little boy will no longer have to bear this burden on his shoulder. I imagine it had been weighing down on him for quite a while now.

"Hey." Showa closed the Book in my hands forcibly, "What do you think you're doing?"

"I-I can do it!" I hastily replied.

"Sis, let her write!" The other boys complained.

"Why won't you let me?!" Shou shouted, "Why won't you let me apologize to mom!?"

"Because she never blamed you!" Showa finally shrieked.

"......"

"...Sigh, she never blamed you, Shou. She never blamed any of you for being born, far from it." Showa said in a melancholy tone, "The pregnancy was tough for her, and when the doctors saw she would give birth to triplets, everyone had advised her not to go through with it."

"Would it have saved her life?" I asked.

"Most definitely. But she declined far too easily." Showa gave a warm smile, "It's not every day that triplets are born. She told everyone in that room, me included, that she would do her best to successfully give birth and survive to live with us. "We would be such a happy family then" she said."

"...But she died." Shou sulked.

"Yes, but she fulfilled her promise." Showa nodded, "She successfully gave birth to the best brothers I could ask for, and she created the happiest family on the island."

"Sis..."

I... I see now. It wasn't the trials and tribulations of raising three kids as a single mother that made her like this. It was precisely these three bundles of joy that motivated Showa to wake up every day and strive to become the perfect caretaker for them. How noble, how...

"Incredible." I shed a tear, "A-Ah?"

"Pff! You crying?" Shell jeered, "The Fairy's a crybaby!"

"Seriously, only babies cry, miss Fairy!" Sharp mocked me, "You're way too old for that!"

"You two...! Sorry about them." Showa apologized, "If you want, I can take the presents away."

"Don't!" They both immediately backpaddled, "Miss Fairy is awesome! Cute! Sweet! Incredible! Miss Fairy all the way!"

"Haha, guess you don't have to after all." I wiped the tears away to smile at the third, most quiet one of the boys, "And you, Shou? I still haven't given you a gift yet."

"...To keep my family happy." He smiled, "I'd like this family we still have to remain healthy and happy, as we are now. Nothing more."

"This kid... Ask for a damned toy or something!" Showa fussed before laughing, "Honestly, you're even more of an adult than me sometimes! I'd have wished for the old man to break his back."

"Hehe, that can all be arranged." I clicked the pen open, "All your wishes, I'll make them come true. That's a Fairy's job, after all."
