20: Exam

Raja Kint breathed in deeply and exhaled. The wind lightly tickles his skin while he enjoys the hot rays of the sun.

The grass ruffled behind Raja Kint.

“It’s the day we finally reach the sect. It’s truly amazing to think we were in that hellhole just a couple of weeks ago. Now we can once again enjoy the beauty of nature.”

“I gotta admit that I truly have a newfound love for nature.” Raja Kint looked over to see Parsinos next to him finishing his step.

The two began walking forward.

After a few hours of traveling, the two found a main road. There were tens of people traveling on this road. They joined the side traveling toward the Sect.

After a while, the two saw the front of the Kint Sect. With a landscape of tall white buildings. And above the entrance is the name “Kint” printed there.

Raja Kint narrowed his eyes looking at the Kint name. He could tell the name was made from arrays. Looking away from the sign he turned his attention toward the sect entrance.

The two walked through the sect entrance and went to the side of the road.

“This is where we part ways. I’ll be looking forward to reading about your future achievements.” Parsinos turned and walked off into the distance.

Raja Kint quickly said, “Make sure you have enough room for all the papers you’ll have of me.” Parsinos shoulders moved up and down from his laughter.

Raja Kint sighed and looked around. He calls out to another young man. The young man stopped and looked at Raja Kint.

“Do you know any good taverns around here?”

“There’s a popular tavern four blocks up and two blocks to the left.”

Raja Kint threw the boy some ki stones and went to the tavern. Once he got there he seated himself at a table in the corner. A waiter came over and Raja Kint ordered meat, bread and water.

When the waiter returned Raja Kint asked about good inns and when the sect entrance exam was to start. Learning that the exam was only one week from now.

After finishing his meal he went to the inn the waiter mentioned. When he arrived he could tell just from the outside how high quality this inn was. He entered and booked the third-best room. Only because the other two were occupied.

Raja Kint goes to his room and begins cultivating. Spending so much time traveling with Parsinos he has been getting closer to a breakthrough.

With peace around him, he focused solely on his breakthrough and took out a ki stone.

After three days Raja Kint exhaled as he welcomed the eighth inner ki. With this breakthrough, he should be unrivaled within the inner ki realm. He also couldn’t help but wonder if he could take on an outer ki realm.

He traveled downstairs to the tavern this inn has. On arrival, he saw a few young kids like himself discussing things. He sat down close enough to hear their conversation. And gave off zero hints that he was listening.

A black-robed young boy says, “The Fenix Sect is in serious trouble. Nobody was expecting a genius to appear from such a small sect.”

The yellow–robed boy adds, “He must have stumbled on a great opportunity. He’s the rising star in our country. Heck, he may even compete in the competition and win.”

A blue-robed girl says, “That empire competition isn't far away. Can he even become strong enough in time?”

“Hmph, you mustn’t belittle geniuses with great luck. He’s doing things we’ll never do.” replied the yellow-robed boy.

Raja Kint became curious about this supposed genius. He walks over to the group of three and introduces himself.

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

“You were mentioning a rising star in the country. What’s his name?” asks Raja Kint.

The girl replies, “We’re not sure but can you not butt into our conversation.”

“Maybe you should just leave now before you cause trouble for yourself. After all, it’s rude to listen in on conversations.” added the black-robed boy.

Raja Kint left and walked into his room. Now wasn’t the time to get into petty fights. He needs to conserve himself for the entrance exam.

Time quickly flew by and the day of the exam arrived. Raja Kint woke up and gathered his things. Leaving the inn he traveled in the direction of the academy.

After a short while he arrived at the academy and saw tens of other kids there as well. Many of them are accompanied by adults. He also noticed the three kids from his inn present as well.

Raja Kint sat down and decided to cultivate until the exam started. After a few hours, three adults appeared from within the academy.

One man with a grey robe and two women. One with a white robe and the other with a red robe.

Raja Kint couldn’t tell exactly how strong they were. At a minimum, he could tell each of them was stronger than the outer ki realm from the town.

The white-robed woman projected her voice. “All of you here present will now begin the entrance exam.”

The excitement in the kids' eyes was apparent. The adults present also showed nervousness. Raja Kint could tell that this academy was a big deal. He couldn’t blame them, he learned firsthand what lacking strength meant.

The red-robed woman stepped forward and waved her hand. A two-meter grey rock appeared in the shape of a cylinder.

“You all will come up individually and be tested for your ki aptitude. There are five colors corresponding to your potential. Red means middle outer ki realm. Blue is late outer ki realm. Pink is a chance at the limbo realm. Yellow is the embryo limbo realm. And green means corporeal limbo realm.” Her eyes surveyed the crowd before continuing.

“You will step up one at a time and place your hand on this stone. The stone will glow one of the five colors for you. If the stone doesn’t glow at least blue then don’t expect to enter the academy.”

Raja Kint could see how nervous the people present were. Regardless he entered around the middle of the line.

Watching those ahead Raja Kint was shocked to see the low aptitude these kids have. Most of the kids couldn’t even get at least a blue glow. He watched as the three from the tavern all got a blue glow. Showing that they were probably from good families.

After about forty kids went. Only about ten glowed blue and one glowed pink. Soon enough Raja Kint’s turn arrived. He walked up to the stone and placed his hand. He’s curious as to what the stone will glow for him. Considering that he knew his aptitude was far beyond the limbo realm.

The stone glowed green and then began cracking.

“Stop!” said the red-robed woman.

Raja Kint removed his hand and looked at her. She looked at him with furrowed brows. After a few moments, she spoke, “You pass.” Raja Kint went to the group who passed and began cultivating.

Everyone present was shocked to see not only a green glow but the stone had also cracked. The three examiners glanced at Raja Kint.

The white-robed woman asks, “How old are you?”

“Nine.” Raja Kint didn’t need to open his eyes to see who she asked. With his performance, he knew the question was directed at him. What he wasn’t expecting was total silence. He opened his eyes and saw everyone looking at him in disbelief.

The white-robed woman chuckled, “Eighth inner ki at only nine years old. We’ve stumbled upon a once-in-a-lifetime prodigy.”

The red-robed woman looked toward the rest of the line. “What are you all gawking at? Come place your hand on this stone.”

The rest of the kids continued with the first test. Out of about the ninety kids present only thirty qualified to enter the sect. And two of those thirty incurred a pink glow. And one person got a yellow glow.

The red-robed woman waved her hand and the stone returned to her ring. She stepped back and looked at the grey-robed man.

The grey-robed man stepped forward. “Now that your ki aptitude has been tested. You will now undergo a test of willpower. On the path of cultivation, you will come across moments where just pushing, just reaching that extra inch deeper will be all the difference.”

He took out a white disk from his ring. “This object will test all of you at the same time. Your cultivation has nothing to do with this object. You should also know that there are three difficulties. Within each difficulty is a constantly progressing test of your will. Keep in mind that all of you have guaranteed your admissions. But now you must show us that you deserve special treatment within the sect. In case you’re wondering. The first level equates to the inner and outer ki realms. The second level equates to the first two stages of the limbo realm. And the third level equates to a willpower reaching the peak of limbo realm. Now come forward and test yourselves.”

The thirty kids walked forward as the man sent the white disk above their heads. Raja Kint got into a meditative position and closed his eyes.

“Level one,” says the man.

A light pressure descended onto Raja Kint’s mind.
