Chapter 9 – Corruption
Days have passed since the time with the fenrirs and it seems that we are getting close to the city which made Reila quite happy as it has been a while since she has slept on a bed. Arriving at the gate the guards halted us. They both seem to wear luxurious high rank magical beast armor.
Guard#1: Halt! State your business!
Nelus: We are just staying for two nights, is it possible for us to enter?
Guard#2: Well… if you can pay 250 blue elder wood coins then we might consider…
Reila: Why is it so expensive!?
Gurad#1: If you can’t pay then just leave here!
Nelus: (If I consider how much blue elder wood coins are worth, in the other worlds it equals silver coins so it is indeed too expensive to just enter. Well it is quite okay as in my realm I do have some elder wood seeds planted, still I need to be cost expensive so that I won’t over spend than what I can provide. I might still need it in the future.) Here are the coins.
Guard#1: Ohh! Very nice you can go in. Hehehe…
Guard#2: Nice girl you have with you!
The guard said as he slaps Reila's behind. Reila then glares at them as she runs behind Nelus.
Nelus: I think it is quite rude to do such actions…
Guard#1: Get used to it! Everyone is like this.
Reila: I don’t think I will like it here…
We headed to the nearest inn and it seems its quality is quite low, with damaged wooden walls and wooden floors.
Innkeeper: Hello… would you like to stay for the night?
Nelus: Yes miss, how much will two nights be worth?
Reila: (If just entering the city is that much… I have a bad feeling about this…)
Innkeeper: 25 red elderwood coins for each person a night.
Nelus: Very reasonable price.
Innkeeper: Of course as in this city this is a low class inn, the high class ones cost at least 200 blue elder wood coins.
Nelus: Quite a large difference…
Innkeeper: In this city, wealth is power. If you have enough you could do anything you want like if you go against the rules you can just bribe the guards.
Nelus: I see… so it is such a place.
Reila: Its so different than our village…
Innkeeper: Are you both hungry? Let me cook up something for you two.
Reila: Thank you!
A few minutes had passed and we were both served with bread and barbecued meat with a sweet scented sauce.
Reila: It is so delicious!!
Innkeeper: Well I can get by. So why is such a couple like you two in such a city like this?
Reila: A c-couple… we look like a couple? K-kyaaa…
Reila squeals as she covers her face.
Nelus: We are just passing by as we are headed somewhere.
Reila: No reaction whatsoever…
Innkeeper: So you two aren’t a couple? Mmm… Maybe I’ll take him for myself.
Reila: Y-you can’t!!!
Nelus: ?
Innkeeper: Ehehe. I might be young but I’m already married you know. You seem easy to tease so I can’t help myself.
Reila: Fuu... I don't know what your talking about...
Nelus: I agree, Reila is an emotional type which can easily be affected by it. Mila said to me once to tease Reila regularly.
Reila: Lord Nelus!!! Mila! What are you teaching Lord Nelus!?
Nelus: Which reminds me… Mila said that once there is a good atmosphere going, I need to tell you this at least once as it seems we have a good weather today, I think it is time for me to tell you her message.
Reila: What message is it?
Nelus: Reila, you are very beautiful, any man will be happy to have a wife like you. Especially me.
Reila: Kyaaaaa!!!! L-lord Nelus!? Wh-what is that Mila making you say!?
Innkeeper: I don’t think that is what she meant for having a good atmosphere…
Nelus: It isn’t? Isn’t Mila married… why would she ask you to be her wife? Also is she secretly a male, pertaining to the last part of the message?
Reila: Hahh… Well it was good while it lasted and it seems when I get back… Mila will be in for a scolding… hehehe…
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
Nelus: I felt a premonition… Mila I feel kind of sorry for her…
Innkeeper: Hahaha… Such an interesting people, you two are.
As I head towards my room Reila head to hers as we both bid each other goodnight. She fell asleep, as for me I am still thinking to myself. This city I feel that more than half of it consist of people with evil intentions. People kept looking at Reila with lustful eyes but it seems that Reila seems used to it and people around us are suffering. Only those people who seemed rich are enjoying life while using the poor to further their wealth. I do not like those kind of people, if they die their souls are hard to cleanse… some are even impossible to clean and their souls are thereby eradicated. Only evil Gods benefit from evil souls and if the evil Gods outnumbered the good Gods I feel that the future will become bleak.
I waited for the night to pass and morning to arrive. I got out of my room and it seems that Reila is still sleeping. I go downstairs and saw an awfully rich man arguing with the innkeeper.
Rich Man: I heard you had an elf as one of your customers. Mmm… Let me see her we are just here to have a talk with her.
Reila: Huh?... What is going on here?
As Reila emerged from the stairway the man instantly looked at her and headed towards her as Reila sensing the surrounding hid behind me.
Rich Man: Oho is she yours? I would like to buy her, elven slave are hard to get these days especially with a quality such as her. Name your price.
Reila: L-Lord Nelus… this man is creepy.
Nelus: She is not for sale.
Rich Man: Come on I’ll pay you 500 black elder wood coins.
Nelus: I will never sell her as a life cannot be bought with petty money.
Rich Man: If you can’t come into terms with me then we will take her! As for you die! Boys!!!
A few dozen of large men emerged from the doorway holding weapons.
Rich Man: I’ll give you another chance give her to me.
???: *Glow*
Nelus: As I have sai… (KILL THEM! KILL THEM!) a-aargh!!!
Rich Man: B-boys attack!!
Reila: What is wrong Lord Nellus!?
Nelus: (In books it said when anger is felt just inhale a deep breath and calm oneself) Hhaaahhh…
Some of the men headed towards Reila but was stopped by a barrier made of electricity. Reila then created energy balls made of light and threw them towards the men and is repelled towards each other as they fall down unconscious. All of the remaining men were trapped in a cage made of lightning that seems to get smaller and smaller, crushing and electrifying them until they fade consciousness.
Rich Man: I’m not done yet! I hired a dozen rank C, five rank B and a rank A mana swordsmen.
Using
Rich Man: Y-y-you’ll pay for this! I’ll come back!
Nelus: Are you okay Reila?
Reila: Yes… thank you Lord Nelus.
Nelus: Sorry for the trouble we caused…
Innkeeper: Its okay, I am used to it.
Nelus: Reila, what about we look around for some books, there seems to be a bookstore nearby.
Reila: Sure Lord Nelus!
We got out of the inn as we heard an announcement.
Man: Bow down all of you! The eldest princess, Nemina is here.
Everyone bowed down except for me and Reila. The people looked over the people then at us as she grinned… is it my imagination? The innkeeper got out of the inn.
Innkeeper: What is going… the princess!? You two bow down!
The innkeeper pulled Reila into a bowing position while I ignored it. As the princess left we were warned by the innkeeper to be careful next time as we headed towards the bookstore.
