Chapter 11: Aptitude Test

Chapter 11: Aptitude Test

Zero goes around the village looking for the most expensive house.

He eventually sees one made from bricks.

He knocks on the door and shortly afterwards a servant opens up.

"I would like to speak with the village chief."

The servant ask him to wait a few minutes and quickly runs off.

Afterwards a different servant approaches him and says they will meet in his living room.

He sees a big bellied old man, who initiates the conversation.

"I'm sorry to keep someone of such status waiting!"

"You do realize your village is getting raided right?"

"It happens every year or so, as long as they don't come after me, the losses are fine."

"Fair enough."

It seems my clothes make people think I have a high status.

I won't tell them otherwise though!

"It's no problem."

"May I ask who are esteemed guest is?"

"Zero"

The man pauses after I say that.

"A very exotic name, you have."

"So, why have you decided to pay this old man a visit?"

"I'm looking to speak to the acolyte that ran this years test?"

"I'm afraid he has already left."

But from the memory of that dead man... he should still be in the village.

I create a ball of fire in my hand.

The chief of the village immediately knows that this is either a level 2 or 3 acolyte or even an official wizard!

"I'm sorry for offending the grown up. I'll take you to see him right away!"

Zero is lead to a white tent.

The chief sends him off as he leaves him at the entrance.

He opens up the flap and walks in.

He sees a young man in a purple robe meditating.

The man has silver hair.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

"Hello?"

He opens his eyes.

"What do you want?"

"I'm here to get my aptitude tested."

"You missed the ceremony, you'll have to wait until next year."

I sigh and create fire in my hand.

"Now I'm a little confused. Normally, you wouldn't even become a wizard without getting your aptitude tested. But that spell requires the user to be at least a level 2 acolyte. How have you not been tested?"

From my many years of living in VR and from reading all those books, I easily make up a reason.

"I'm actually an official wizard. But I was attempting to do an experiment on the soul. I ended up wiping a lot of my memories. Now I have no idea where I am..."

"Pretty sketchy backstory... but ok. Let me get my equipment."

"My name is Steiner by the way, who are you?"

"I'm Zero."

"Nice name."

"Thanks."

I scan him

[ECHO]: {Name: "Steiner Eddge", Species: Human, Energy: 0 GR, Strength: 2, Vitality: 4, Mana: 357, Spirit: 10, Soul: 5}

Steiner rummages through his luggage and pulls out something that looks like a stamp.

He presses it down on my forehead and then checks it.

"Ha! To think it broke already."

"What do you mean?"

"That was the age test. We don't allow people over the age of 25 to join our academy. But look here. It says that you are 8 years old. Hahahahahaha"

I begin to laugh as well.

Until he pulls out another brand new stamp.

"Let's try it again."

"It still says you're eight years old... how old are you?"

"I'm eight..."

"Alright... enough playing around. Put your hand on this."

"This will tell you your aptitude. 13 is the highest, 1 is the lowest. This will effect your practice speed."

"After this, we will find out the element that you are most compatible with."

I put my hand on the crystal ball and feel a buzzing in my head.

"Hahahahahah! Your aptitude is a 1. This is literally impossible. How the hell did you become an official wizard with an aptitude of 1?"

"That isn't funny..."

"It's hilarious man."

All of a sudden lightning shoots out of the hand of Steiner and crashes against my nanite membrane, it then bounces off of it.

"You weren't lying... a passive shield is only something an official wizard would have."

Behold the power of technology!

Gotta fake it till you make it.

"Your entire existence is contradictory."

You have no idea man... no idea.

"haha- Mhmm. Let us check your elemental affinity."

"Put your finger in this bowl."

I place my finger in the bowl and see a variety of colors.

They all run away from my finger.

Except for a silver liquid.

As well as what looks like black ink

It wraps around my finger.

"Strong elemental affinity with metal. Minor elemental affinity with darkness."

Is it because of the nanites?

"You also have almost zero affinity with any other element. Based on everything I know... you shouldn't even be able to form a fireball in your hand unless your mastery of magic was godlike. Just who the hell are you?"

"I told you... weird experiment on the soul..."

"What academy did you come from? Let me guess, you don't remember?"

"It's almost like you just spawned in this world."

"Hahahahahha!"

I nervously laugh.

"Anyways... what are your plans?"

"Plans?"

"What do you plan to do until you recover your memories?"

"I would like to join an academy, and work on researching aspects of the soul."

"Hmm... maybe you were from the Soul Fire academy, if that is all you remember."

"That is quite far away."

I then ask.

"What are your plans?"

"I plan on heading back to my academy, turning in my task and getting more contribution points for a water clarity potion and breaking through to an official wizard!"

"What does a water clarity potion do exactly?"

"It only really helps speed up the etching process for runes."

"Interesting"

I need access to a library.

I ask Steiner if there is a library at his academy.

He tells me there is, but outsiders are not allowed.

He then jokingly says that I can come with him if I'm his servant.

I agree.

"Have you no pride? You're an official wizard!"

"Nope! No pride at all!"

"I do have one condition though."

"What is it?"

"Never tell anyone about my aptitude!"

This is just a small journey in my infinite life.

Who will remember me as a servant anyways?
