Chapter 41 - Be a Man and Burn

Chapter 41 - Be a Man and Burn

“So? What do you want?” Taylor's dad asks before taking a sip of the steaming hot coffee.

Taylor takes a sip of his hot chocolate and stares blankly at the table. “I was wondering if you knew something…” Taylor begins to say.

“Knew something about what?” Taylor's dad says with a chuckle. He smelled Taylor miles before he had arrived at the house. At first he thought it was food delivering itself to him and he was surprised when he saw that it was his son.

“Ah…” Taylor says, unsure how to explain it. “I'm… starting to lose control… And I don’t know why. Whenever I get into a fight, my consciousness fades and instincts take over. There’s no skill when I fight… I just become an animal…” Taylor tries to say, ashamed to admit it.

Taylor’s dad laughs out loud. He was very amused at how his son turned out. “Taylor, I’m an Asura.” He starts to say with a smile. “But I started out as a demon. You’re a half-blood demon, Taylor.” He says, grinning at the shock on Taylor’s face. “The only thing keeping you sane this whole time was your mother, and if you lived a normal life you would have been fine. But I don’t know when or how; you somehow started cultivating. That was something neither your mother or I intended for you, but you still found yourself on that path. You can only blame the world, Taylor.” He says with a smile.

Taylor takes a moment to process the information before looking his dad in the eyes. “So how do I control myself?” Taylor asks, hoping for an answer.

“I don’t know, Taylor. As a demon, I was barely aware of the things I was doing. I fought, shed blood and survived, like a rat in the sewer. And one day, I woke up and began to cultivate. It taught me discipline and it taught me control. But the cultivation technique you’re practicing is teaching you freedom and freedom for a demon is… not ideal.” Taylor’s father says with a serious stare; he didn’t want to admit it but he was a little worried for his son.

Taylor’s eyes widen. It’s my cultivation technique! Fuck! It taught me to be honest with myself but who knew I was a piece of shit all along? And I can't even switch techniques! Taylor thinks somewhat angrily. Taylor looks back on the start of his cultivation journey and sighs. I really should have given up cultivation back then… He thinks bitterly. “There has to be something I can do. Don’t tell me you don’t have suggestions.” Taylor says, hoping for some fatherly guidance for once.

“I don’t know what to tell you Taylor. You can either play this out carefully, trying to control what can’t be controlled or you can be a man and burn like god intended. The demon side of you and the human side are in conflict; I say just let both sides fight it out naturally. You might destroy yourself and the things you care about but it’s also possible your two sides will find common ground.” Taylor’s dad says honestly. “Also, I don’t think you have it in you to control either side of your identity.” He says with a laugh. He knew his son; he was emotional and he was honest. If he felt something should be done, he didn’t consider whether it was wrong, he would just do it. It’s possible that could lead him on the wrong side of the world, but that was up to fate.
