Chapter 5 - (transl.)

He had barely closed an eye that night. Still, he rested his mind as best he could. He meditated through the night, which allowed him to put his thoughts aside and give the tired mind at least part of the recovery. He still hadn't distributed the new points.

Above all, a lot of news came in last night that he tried to block out. On that one night he won a few levels just by his traps, which brought him to level 15 without further ado, with which he earned a total of 112 points that wanted to be redistributed. It would be an integral part of his preparations for what was to come.

He called his status in his field of vision and began to distribute his points. Most of all he needed new magic. That meant his willpower needed a strong update and so he gave it 45 points, his intelligence 42 points, which apparently determined his mana supply, had become an equally important resource for him. The remaining points were distributed in such a way that it fit and looked best for him. He always found odd numbers that weren't rounded off unpleasant.

In addition, it had finally become necessary for him to rearrange his status. The chaos in his skills almost drove him insane, but how should he best and most effectively sort it out?

Well, first of all, he could gain general skills. He could also subdivide these in motion. Then any close combat skills.

Then he acquired some mana-related skills. Furthermore, he had the formation of the earth, which he regarded as elementary. That should at least give him an overview of his possibilities.

At last he could start creating new magic. Inwardly, he was still crying about the fact that there were no classes, because classes offered a significant advantage over free magic. He didn't need to understand or research the magic and could just learn the spells and work with them.

But first he had to run out of his traps. Most of them contained dead deer without antlers, a few saber foxes were also included. In fact, something that came close to a wolf. In one there was a giant snake that was impaled cleanly, in another something that looked like a wild boar if it had been crossed with a lion.

The biology that created a magical world caused a new amazement, how else should he describe the diversity of the different animals?

He collected the animaland was already looking forward to his Lord's Supper, which would be more than abundant due to the plentiful booty. He spent most of his morning skinning the corpses, stretching the skins, pulling the meat from the bones, and designing a small smokehouse. Here, too, the formation of the earth was used again. The meat would have kept a lot longer if it had been smoked compared to if it had only been fried. Only his Lord's Supper was fried that day. After spending most of his morning securing his food, he began examining the live traps. Not all had caught something and if the animal didn't interest him, then he did it from a distance either with his earth shaping or a few mana bolts. He freshened up all the traps that he cleared and added more in the vicinity. Every fight that took place an arm's length away was a good fight, he wrote down in his mind.

The whole action earned him two more levels and the points landed immediately in his intelligence. Every time it was an absolutely euphoric feeling to go up a step. Distributing the points and expanding the strengths was a completely different high that had to be experienced and enjoyed.

In one of the live traps one of these wolf-like things ran in circles. While looking at it, he identified the animal in its trap [iron fur level 30]. The animal was much bigger than the Siberian wolves and if it weren't for the trapped in the pit, it would surely go up to his shoulders. It was a larger specimen than the others he had fished from the death traps. There was an almost uncanny intelligence in his eyes that seemed to be studying him. The fur was black as night and looked stiff in places like scales. Its tail was bushier than that of normal wolves, but here too the fur looked like it could harden naturally. It just looked up at him, but didn't take his eyes off him for a second.

Magna decided this would be the animal he wanted to tame! It would be an ideal companion and he was no taller than 160 cm, so it could also serve as a mount. Behind him lay a couple of corpses in their freshness. The wolf sniffed and he could see the saliva on the wolf. He had never had the intention to torture an animal, so he threw one of the carcasses down into the pit.

"Have a taste for it smaller, see you tomorrow!"

Only then did he leave the wolf, which was caught in one of the traps in the thickest part of the forest. In general, the yield and the animals in this area were completely different.

For lunch he tossed a few slices of the meat into the fireplace and waited for them to be done. Again he was playing around with his mana in the fire, always trying to grab it, but the fire felt consuming to him. “Maybe that was the point?”

“Fire is consuming, earth, stone, metals are static. Water gives, but what is wind then? Is the peculiar nature of things important in order to gain a spell from it? ”

Talking to himself, brooding, he almost reached into the fire with his hand before he noticed how something was draining his mana, the flames gathered on his hand, without burning it. His own mana protected him.

[System: Congratulations, you've acquired the fire manipulation skill. Used correctly, they no longer fear the cold in life. As the level rises, the cost of your mana decreases slightly and the application gains power]

"Huh?"

[System: Do you want to accept this skill?]

Only a quick yes came into his mind.

[System: skill fire manipulation acquired level 1 acquired.]

[System: gained experience.]

What was much more interesting for him, however, was how the new skill had arranged itself directly under the elements. Surprised, he couldn't wait and began to manipulate the fire to the ideal heat for his steaks. He had to ask himself whether he could only manipulate an existing fire or whether it was possible for him to create one as well.

After his steaks were ready, he fixed his gaze on his hand and began to imagine a ball of fire. Although he had some knowledge, his naturally high willpower was now enough to shape it from it. This confirmed one of his theories about the functionality of magic and its balance.

“But would the spell then work as he imagined it or as physics dictated it? Would the system make up for this lack of knowledge? ”

In fact, that only raised more questions, but for a test, he threw the fireball onto a smaller rock formation. There it shattered, as he imagined it before, but it didn't really seem to have the properties of fire, it did let out something like a flame explosion, but something about it felt completely wrong. Finally he tried again, but this time he supplemented his willpower with his knowledge of it and actually it behaved a little differently than before, because there was no real explosion, but the fire looked for a few seconds to hold on to something that could consume it before it finally dissolved without a new supply of oxygen and fuel.

That little substantial difference could be crucial in a fight. If he combined the two further, then he would be able to make the fireworks almost like napalm. It would stick to its destination, where it would then consume it all until there is nothing left of it. The heat would also have to increase enormously for this purpose.

In fact, he couldn't wait. In his notebook he began to formulate questions and possible answers, as well as theories about magic and its functions.

It didn't take much longer to unlock the water manipulation, which, as expected, had a giving affinity, but if things had any affinities then they only defined their natural behavior. "Maybe, maybe the wind would be neutral then?"

It didn't take much longer to prove this. Soon he also had the wind manipulation. "Can I also manipulate metal?"

He reached curiously for the dagger at his side, which he injected a small part of his mana into and waited for a reaction that actually occurred. Another skill was added to his new one.

In that one day he had achieved a lot more than originally expected. He could hardly help it and played with his new magic all day. He brought her up a few notches, but he hadn't formed new skills from it, nor did the system recognize his pit traps as traps. "Why was that like that? Did he do something wrong? Or did he have to standardize things so that they could be recognized, just as he practically standardized his bolts? ”

He only found the entrance to his hut to be drawn to the new ideas when night had already fallen and he was creating some new skills for his elements. until he almost ran out of mana. Among them were earth spears, wind scythes, water scythes and fireballs! He neatly jotted down each new skill in his notebook to remind himself how to document their creative process in more detail.

Anything that helped him to survive would serve him and at least when it came to his own survival he could be more than ruthless. He felt he couldn't afford morals. Plus, people who were guided by their morals have always been predictable, and predictability can be very quick to lose.

He didn't delude himself for a single second about how this world would treat him. It was a eat or die mentality that was slowly starting to form in his mind. Others would have called it the law of the jungle. He knew deep down that if he didn't mentally adapt to his new situation, he would very soon have ended up impaled in a pit himself.

For the night he gathered again by the fireplace. It didn't take much longer until he could hear the rhythmic noises of the drums in the distance again. It had come a little closer to him again and he could identify the sound much better. Before he fell asleep, he was greeted by a message that he had not expected.

[System: you have a human level ?? killed.]killed

[System: Youan enemy 60 steps above your own. Bonus experience granted.]pissed

The news completely took him off. It had come completely unexpected for him. While he expected some creature responsible for these drums to jump into his traps, he couldn't wait for an ordinary person to do so.

The person also clearly appeared to have died from the trap. It also seemed unlikely to him that anyone would fall into his traps, but on the other hand he was also unaware of how close he lived to the edge of the forest or even the nearest settlement. This would clearly mean trouble for him. Maybe he had to leave home again? He would go one way or another if what was coming from the depths of the forest got more to him than he could bear, but he just hadn't expected people from the other side. That would create a whole different kind of anger.

He decided to put out the fire in the chimney with the water manipulation, to gather all his clutter and finally to hide under the log cabin in his distress. He would spend the night cuddled up in his skins before heading back to the surface in daylight.
