Chapter 31 - transl.

Without knowing it, he explored the elevation at its safest time of day, because according to the statement of the young nobleman the plateau was haunted by something during the day, which according to the statements of Bard was something like the undead. not really death appeared.

They were, rather, seemed to be possessed in one way or another. It was just their movement that was reminiscent of the undead. The whole conversation that followed provided quite a bit of information. Before that, he was neither aware that this world had the undead, nor that there was a republic whose form of rule was a stark contrast to the nobility. With that he could not even say with certainty in which time cycle their history was, but perhaps also historical divisions of the earth were completely inappropriate.

The humanoids did not appear to be human either, albeit human-like. According to Bard, they had a skin tone reminiscent of emerald or a metal, which is also much tougher compared to human beings, in their forehead they had a third eye that seemed to shimmer in a constant mana shimmer.

Her figure was tall as well as thin. Her fingers were longer than people's. In addition, they had no hair on their heads or in any other visible places. But in contrast to their appearance, it seemed that they slept at night and did not take a shuffling gait until the sun rose.

Whatever these humanoid occupants gave their normal eyes a glassy shimmer, but the descriptions couldn't replace the picture as he peered out the window and saw a single one of them roaming around town.

Contrary to a zombie, the chaser whom Bard spoke was anything but stupid because he seemed to be checking the houses in a rather complicated pattern. Turned handles, peered inside or knocked in windows to hear a reaction.

But probably the most striking feature was that they had no legs, but rather had the lower body of a snake, even if they lacked the usual scales. Something that at least some of the furniture in the various dwellings could now better explain. Somehow they reminded him a little of Naga, but looked just as strange to them.

Bard: “They are all swarming in the center. All of its buildings are brightly lit at night as well as during the day. Whatever energy this city is about to go out, the lights tend to flicker every now and then. We broke into the ruins at night, where they slept in some caves under the city, we had to fight our way through. It was terribly hot there and the light reminded us of the sunlight. ”

So UV lights shot through his head, whatever these humanoid beings are, they needed sunlight, maybe something that was in them, but gave for it there is only one way. Bard seemed way too nervous to face any of them.

However, this was too excellent an opportunity to catch one of the creatures, to study it, to learn from its physiology. Just how could he do this? Soon it should appear in front of her house one way or another.

To be on the safe side, he began excavating the ground directly in front of the house with the stone molding, with a wafer-thin layer of earth to serve as a cover for the pit, which probably could not support the weight of this creature.

Of course he could fight fair or honorably, but for what? What purpose was fairness, honor, decency if it stood between one's own survival? No, first he wanted to know what it could do. Presumably the hole stopped this thing for too long.

While he was still molding, he turned to Bard: “Weaknesses?”

Bard answered, trembling, almost stuttering: “What?”

Magna had no patience left: “I asked if the things were weakening? Do they weaken other than the dark? How do they react to fire? Like on stone or water? Any information?"

Bard: " I, I don't know. We had a magician on the team, but he hadn't lasted long. Then we met them in hand-to-hand combat. Your skin is incredibly robust against sharp or stabbing weapons. Blunt did a few effects, but none of them were moving. In the ruin they just overrun us after daybreak. ”

So Bard basically didn't know anything about the weaknesses of these things when you peeled off the darkness! Magna slowly went through the skills in his head that could have an effect on it. Many options were not open to him. First he could check the elements, then a couple of mana-based skills, like the mana hands to hold it in place, telekinesis to attack weak points with the needles. Unfortunately, telekinesis only worked on inanimate objects. He couldn't just grab someone and throw them around with it.

As a precaution, he began to fill the hole with the hydrogen-oxygen mixture. Regardless of whether it worked, the whole area, probably the whole plateau, would be notified by the explosion.

It was just an escape plan, he reassured himself in his mind. After all, he couldn't blow something up every time just because he was running out of ideas.

The time until the thing appeared in front of her door passed a lot faster than Magna could have expected. But before it slid into the exact area in front of the door, it instinctively paused. Did it know? Was it going through his head? Could it feel the trap?

Only a moment later it snaked its way further towards the door, whereupon it was rewarded with the sound of the floor breaking and the sound of the darkness disappearing below them. The hole had taken on some decent size. After opening the door, like looking into the hole, he could see it down there, crawling around like a trapped animal.

Behind him, Bard stammered a few incomplete words after seeing it straight away. Magna, on the other hand, was far more interested in the creature and its behavior. This was appropriate behavior for intelligent beings. Out of curiosity, he sent a few waves of mana down the hole, whereupon he got strange results. The creature itself seemed dead, but also alive, which reminded him of Bard's descriptions, but there seemed to be something inside his head, something very much alive!

If he didn't know better, he would have suspected a parasite, and it seemed to react strangely to the mana wave. It paused in its hustle and bustle to look around, confused. After all, he wanted to try his mana skills. With his mana hands he reached into the pit and gripped it tight, causing it to struggle in an attempt to free itself from the invisible grip that was holding it.

He then began aiming the mana bolts at the thing's eye as best he could. Not the two, but the thing in the middle of his forehead. Some of them missed, while more hit the eye directly. It seemed to pause for a very deep, long moment before pulling itself back together. Whatever lived in the head of this thing seemed to have some problems with mana.

Unfortunately, the attacks didn't seem to be doing very much. Finally the thing thrust its fingers like claws into the pit wall and slowly began to pull itself towards her.

From behind he could hear Bard mumbling over and over again, repeating over and over again: "This is bad, really bad, we're screwed. You now know that we are here. "

Magna tried to ignore it, but it actually seemed a bit of information to be: "What does she know?"

Bard: "You know, you knew it always, as soon as we saw one that they have seen us all."

Magna: “Fuck me sideways! Couldn't you have said that earlier? ”

Magna even forgot his polite address, if he had known that there was a crush consciousness, then he would have pissed off instead of looking for a fight. That was fucking bull shit! If it was true, the place would soon be swarming with them. He had to do it, and quickly. Before the thing pulled over the parapet, he reached down, putting his hand on his head and pumping as much mana into it as he could.

[System: You killed an unknown level Alien Worlds Parasite]

[System: You earned experience unknown.]

The thing twitched wildly, like electrified nerve tissue, before falling silently back into the pit. Why had he pumped mana into the skull of the thing? He didn't have a single bloody clue! It was goddamn gut instinct that told him this could stop it.

Basically, he wasn't really fighting against the being, but against whatever lived in its head. In the distance he could already make out some of the alien beings. They meandered in their masses directly towards their location.

Magna: "This is what it looks like when shit hits a fan!"

Bard: "When shit hits what?"

Instead of simply disappearing, he closed the door, thereby depriving him of his view of the creature, to see it shortly afterwards to disappear in its memory and to close the hole. Immediately afterwards he tore open the door and shouted inside: “We're getting out of here! Move on if you want to survive. ”

Bard barely moved, but was between a waking state and his state of shock.

Magna: "Goddamn it, you noble brat, the house of Astria!"

The mention of his house somehow seemed to get him back into action. Catching himself, he got up and walked towards him. Leica had been ready all along, in case the situation required. Magna grabbed his backpack for herself. Together they stormed out of the house with Leica, leading him in the direction he was coming from. It was always better to retreat over familiar terrain.

Bard: “Where are we going?"

Magna: " To your people. I don't trust them, but at least I trust you enough to say that you are completely decent. "

Bard: " Thank you, thank you! "

Magna: “Talk less, move more. Come on! ”

Together they fled through the areas he knew, using whatever they could find for cover. In the background, a few minutes later, hundreds of the creatures streamed over the small town.

Whereupon, after they searched everything in the place, they could neither find the strangers nor their other. But giving up was not a word in their lexicon, instead they drifted apart in all directions in search of them. If Magna could have seen this, he would have understood Bard's whimpering noise better.

In retrospect, it was probably his stupidest idea to want to study that thing. On the other hand, he had done it successfully, if surprisingly. As effective as the method was established, it was also impossible against larger groups or in a regular fight! Where he couldn't just lay his hand on one of his enemies.

A few of these beings seemed to be successfully following them. This just didn't allow them to take a break. They also seemed to keep catching up, at least according to his personal gut feeling. At least he has always been able to trust this one the most. Leica also seemed to notice something, because through the link he could sense her nervousness. Why did he keep falling into these situations?

Distracted for a moment, they turned a corner just to have one of the things staring at them. For a brief moment they were frozen. Even the thing didn't seem to move. In his head Magna just kept repeating a single word over and over again "shit" which clearly mutated into his new favorite word.

Before the thing could really react, he grabbed it in his Mana hands and stormed forward. It tried to punch at him, whereupon he could barely avoid the arms. He could hold it in place, but not restrict his arms. With a crack, his hand landed on the creature's skull and mana poured into its head.

Shortly thereafter, just like the other life form, it begins to twitch wildly. The system message confirmed what he already knew that Ding had been dead on the spot.

Bard: "Damn it, what was that ..."
