Chapter 8: The Brotherhood (Part 1)

As the violent elemental fluctuations gradually ceased, what appeared before Felix was a lifelike ice sculpture!

The middle-aged assassin stood about three steps in front of Felix. His dagger was even poised at Felix's neck, but unfortunately, he could no longer move a step. A force of frost had crept up from his feet into his body, instantly freezing his blood and solidifying his heart as he was about to slit Felix’s throat.

Winter of the Dead was the highest-level frost magic Felix had mastered so far, recorded in the Felendia Library's "Lich Manuscript".

In fact, Felix didn’t understand even a single frost skill of a death knight; all his methods of using the power of frost were imitated from liches. This approach to harnessing frost power leaned more towards elemental ice magic and didn't require close combat like a death knight would.

The Felendia library's collection was limited. So far, Felix had found only two books that detailed methods of using the power of frost: "The Compendium of Necromancy" and the "Lich Manuscript".

The former introduced only the most basic applications of frost power, with the only useful spell for Felix being a multi-elemental magic called Frost Nova. On the other hand, the thin "Lich Manuscript" contained much knowledge Felix needed to acquire, including the variations of frost power and the incantations of three major frost magics.

Winter of the Dead was the only frost magic that Felix could currently use. It was a unique technique of using frost power to freeze an enemy's blood.

After killing the middle-aged assassin, Felix took a deep breath and stepped back slowly, feeling the undeniable heartache from his depleted magic power. Although he had always been dedicated to researching how to conserve magic and reduce consumption while building magical channels, the effects of such conservation were extremely limited without a substantial foundation of magic power.

Looking into the eyes of the middle-aged assassin, Felix shook his head and snapped off the dagger coated with deep blue poison from the ice sculpture.

With a "crack", due to excessive force and the assassin already frozen solid by Winter of the Dead, Felix also broke off the half of the assassin's hand that had frozen blood vessels.

The roof was in disarray. The commotion had evidently alarmed the residents below, as distant clamorous voices could be heard. Such intense elemental fluctuations were bound to attract the attention of the Imperial City guards.

Felix straightened his clothes and then took out a magic scroll from his sleeve, now useless. The unbelievable multiple spells cast in the assassin's eyes were nothing but Felix activating the magic scroll with a burst of magic while chanting the incantation of Winter of the Dead!

Although his mental strength was formidable, it wasn’t so aberrant that he could cast two spells at once.

A two-headed ogre could cast multiple spells because it had two heads, which often argued with each other. Felix couldn’t do multiple spells, but activating a magic scroll with an extra burst of magic while chanting the incantation of Winter of the Dead was no problem for him with his immense mental power.

Besides, as cautious as Felix was, how could he use a high-level skill in front of a high-level assassin without any preparation?

After melting the ice on the severed hand, Felix summoned a flame in his palm and collected the two identical daggers into the Blue Crystal. To understand the identity of the middle-aged assassin, he might need to visit Saint Erde Cathedral.

As the ice melted, blood began to seep from the severed hand. Felix stepped back slightly to avoid being splashed.

The frost power containing undead energy was different from ordinary ice elements; it had a strong corrosive effect and elemental stability. Unless Felix intentionally dispersed the magic, the frost power would linger on the assassin's body for a long time.

The noisy voices were getting closer. Felix glanced at the completely frozen body of the middle-aged assassin. Now he hesitated - should he take the assassin's body with him or leave it here? Just as Felix was about to pick up the frozen body, a faint crossbow sound reached his ears!

Almost simultaneously with the sound of the crossbow, Felix unhesitatingly pulled over the frozen body of the assassin to shield himself, then he burst back, summoning the remaining frost power in his body to form a shield of ice in front of him!

There's another assassin!

Three crossbow bolts were fired. The first pierced through the frozen body of the middle-aged assassin, almost passing through it, coated with a deep blue poison. The second bolt struck Felix's shield of ice and lodged in his armor. Seeing the bolt stuck in his silvery armor, Felix's pupils contracted sharply, a sense of foreboding rising in his heart.

Demonbane Bolt!

Almost simultaneously with the last sound of the crossbow, Felix fell backward to the ground. In that instant, he closed his eyes and, using his powerful mental strength, locked onto the direction from which the bolts were coming and activated the magic rune on his left arm with his last bit of magic power.

Death’s Touch!

The third bolt pierced through the silvery armor on Felix and into his ribs, barely missing his heart due to his timely fall.

Armor-Piercing Bolt!

At the same time, a muffled groan came from the hidden assassin in the dark corner.

Two cylindrical objects were thrown onto the rooftop and then exploded with a "bang", spreading a greyish-white mist. Suddenly, the surroundings were enveloped in a dense fog, obscuring all visibility. As soon as Felix inhaled the fog, he felt dizzy and, without hesitation, leaped off the roof, heading towards Felendia.

The fog is poisonous!

The death knight’s physique dulled the physical pain, making the agony of the bolt colliding with his ribs bearable as he moved. His control over blood also significantly slowed the bleeding, although Felix's handsome face turned terrifyingly pale due to blood loss. But at least the pain was within his tolerance.

Blood was a crucial power source for a living death knight, as his power of frost was hidden within it!

Before entering the wutong forest, Felix glanced back at the rooftop. The patrolling knights of the Imperial City had arrived, but the frozen body of the middle-aged assassin was gone, seemingly taken away by the later assassin amidst the fog.

It seemed neither Felix nor the mysterious assassins wanted the Empire's forces involved. Enduring the pain, Felix gritted his teeth, summoned his magic for one last Aeromaneuver, and swiftly fled towards Felendia. He couldn't be sure if more assassins were trailing him; the safest place for now was only Felendia.

Once inside the protective net of the magic tower, Felix finally breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at the crossbow bolt that had penetrated deep into his waist and a hint of killing intent flashed across his pale face.

He had been careless.

He never expected another assassin hidden in the shadows, prepared with expensive Demonbane and Armor-Piercing Bolts to kill him!

The previous ambush and the blue poison on the bolts were just diversions.

The real threat was the two bolts from the second assassin: first, the Demonbane Bolt to penetrate his magical shield, followed by the Armor-Piercing Bolt to pierce his silvery armor. If Felix hadn’t used Death’s Touch to hit the assassin, he would have faced a relentless pursuit.

Luckily, Felix had worn a metal armor under his cloak these past few days due to a sense of unknown danger. Otherwise, the second Demonbane Bolt might have been fatal.

“Paralysis Enchantment!”

Upon entering Felendia, Felix first cast a "Paralysis Enchantment" on himself. Then, gritting his teeth, he used the remaining strength to forcibly snap the Armor-Piercing Bolt lodged in him.

The bolt had pierced through the armor and lodged in his lung, and forcibly removing it could have severely damaged his lung. To extract the bolt, surgery was needed, and now only the succubus could help him.

Felix overestimated his tolerance for pain; he fainted from blood loss while snapping the bolt.

When he woke up, he found himself in his room, with the magic clock on the wall showing it was a quarter past three in the afternoon the next day.

Felix felt extremely hungry, a result of excessive blood loss. With his free left hand, he pulled back the covers and saw his naked body, but the arrowhead inside him had been removed, and the wound was stitched with rune thread.

An alchemical concoction still fresh on it – the half bottle of Dragon Potion left, a potion that briefly grants one the powerful regenerative abilities of a dragon by enhancing metabolism and wound healing.

As Felix was checking his wounds, the door opened.

The succubus sister, clad in a slightly tight mage robe, walked in holding a tray with freshly prepared liquid food. The tight mage robe was almost bursting at the seams due to her ample bosom, but this oppressive curve had its own seductive allure.
