54: The Story of Finn

54: The Story of Finn

Finn was born during the final years of the last War of the Lost.

When he was six years old, he was conscripted.

This might sound very early, but at that time, the Kasakan government was planning to create a unit of child soldiers, which, along with other projects, was supposed to turn the tide of the war in their favor.

Although it wasn't his fault, he regrets every day of his life that he can't remember his mother.

Before joining the army, he only had faint memories of his time in the slums.

But he could still remember his early days in the army very well.

If he didn't follow orders, he was punished.

He still has nightmares from that time:

...

It scared him!

But whenever he didn't do what they said, they dragged him there and threw him in.

It was a dark pit, whose bottom he never saw before they threw him in.

He always felt like he was falling forever before he hit the ground with a dull thud.

At first, he still cried.

...

But no one came.

No one comforted him.

But if he did what they said, he was rewarded.

Then he wouldn't have to go back into the pit again and again.

...

But he couldn't manage it.

What they demanded of him was impossible.

They wanted them to be better than the other adults.

To run faster, fight better, be better... at everything.

Yet all he wanted was to be back home.

...

With his parents, his family, his home.

But unless he delivered good results, he would never be allowed to go home.

But he was sure he would never manage that.

----------------------------------------

After what felt like endless nightmares, he came to the conclusion that he would only make it back home if he obeyed their orders.

...

And so he did.

The following weeks and months were hell for him.

But he fought through.

Then, three years after he was taken from his home, the news he had been waiting for all those years finally came.

"The war is over! We don't need you brats anymore! Get back to wherever you came from!"

This news made him incredibly happy.

After three years in hell, he would finally be allowed to return home.

But he had no idea what awaited him there.
