17: Ruins of a Forgotten Time

He had never seen anything like this before.

The ruins looked like they were over a hundred years old.

Slowly, he crept through them.

The only sounds were those of the local wildlife. It was hard to distinguish what anything was supposed to be, yet somehow, this place felt familiar to him.

As if he had been here before.

A loud, booming rattle echoed through the ruins, startling a few birds.

,What was that?´ he wondered, and started searching for the source of the noise.

After a short while, he saw some cables on the ground, leading out of the ruins.

He followed them.

The cables were quite thick, almost like tree roots.

A little later, he reached an entrance at a hill that led into the ground.

,Did that noise come from here?´

He got his answer from an even more tremendous roar, making him cover his ears.

,I must be pretty far from the harbor if no one else hears this.´

After a brief hesitation, he opened the metal door and stepped inside.

In front of him lay a long, dark corridor.

As he felt his way along the wall, he accidentally hit a switch. Suddenly, the lights in the corridor turned on.

In the distance, he could see another door.

What puzzled him most was how the lights suddenly came on in the tunnel. How was that possible? For now, he continued onward.

He tried to open the door, but it was locked. Or was it just stuck?

He gathered some energy and pulled the door open with a loud crash. Apparently, it had been locked because he had ripped it off its hinges.

In front of him lay a larger room with many tables covered in strange apparatuses. He couldn't identify any of the devices, but by now, he was almost used to seeing and experiencing things he couldn't explain.

Then he suddenly noticed a man on the other side of the room.

The man had been staring at him the whole time.

For a moment, both were silent. Then Kawao noticed the man's coat. It was the same as the one worn by the pirate leader he had just defeated!

"Who are you?" Kawao asked seriously.

"I'd like to know that as well," the man replied.
