29: Aftershocks

"John? What do you mean? Is everything alright?" Kawao asked, confused.

"You lied to me!" he slurred, stumbling towards the bed.

"You promised me... hic... that you wouldn't tangle with the pirates!... And you broke that promise! You broke it!"

"I know! I'm really sorry. But I had no other choice! If I hadn't fought them, then now..."

"Stop making excuses! To me or to yourself. You knew you could have avoided it. But you did it anyway. You abused my trust!"

"So you would have preferred if the harbor was destroyed because I did nothing?"

"Yes! Because then you wouldn't have broken your promise!"

For a moment, there was silence.

"If the people from the harbor report this to the army, we're finished!"

They were uneasy, muttering fearfully to themselves.

"QUIET!" the deputy shouted, slamming a knife into a nearby wall.

"We don't need to worry! Even if they contact the army, we still have enough time to get out of here! We should start preparing. Let the others know!"

The others nodded hesitantly and then left.

While the pirates were preparing to flee, rumors began to slowly spread elsewhere, infecting a large city with possible falsehoods.

This was the beginning of a hunt that would spread across the entire land, targeting only one person:

Kawao.
