With exhaustion from the exhausting day, Adam sat at his desk. After losing consciousness while reading his fifth magical book, the eyeless old man had cleaned up the entire cave, so his desk was even cleaner than before.
Trying to clear his doubts and come up with a plan, Adam took out his godfather's biography and explained everything that had happened. Although his godfather had no knowledge of magical books, he had plenty of life experience, so Adam hoped to receive some good advice before attempting to read the last magical book on the list.
After a while, a message appeared in his godfather's biography:
'Unfortunately, I forgot many things in my life, and everything related to the secrets of the Builders' religion is the part I remember the least. What you experienced today was probably due to learning one of the secrets of the Magician's faith.
As for the rest, the decorations are usually a matter of status for the bookshelves, so don't worry too much about the hat; it might symbolize something very important to the eyeless old man.
Being a wizard can be useful, but it can also be a tragedy: you may see things that are best left ignored, but there's no turning back now. You can only adapt the best you can to the new situation and try to make the most of it. Good luck with your sixth magical book.'
The redhead read his godfather's words attentively, but unfortunately, it seemed that there wasn't much useful information regarding how to face the challenge of the sixth book. For now, the only clue he had was the information he obtained from reading his fifth book.
However, the young man wasn't entirely convinced that merely keeping his mouth shut would keep him alive in a challenge more complicated than the last one. In the last challenge, if it weren't for the healing lake, he probably would have died, and now the problem was that the lake couldn't save him inside a book.
Adam, with some fear of his uncertain future, went to ask the eyeless old man. It seemed that on this topic, he would give a more substantial response, so the best he could do right now was to gather more useful information.
—As the owner of the magic book, shouldn't it know what happens to me when I read it?—Adam asked one of the cave's walls.
The eyeless old man materialized and replied sadly:
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
—I only know the effect of the book vaguely. I don't know the process of how you obtain the powers. Besides, I never read the books: I ask them, and they tell me what they want.
—You talk to the books?—Adam asked in surprise, seeking more information.
—Of course...—the old man replied calmly—Besides, I remind you that each magical book has its own will, and as a magician, you should treat them like living beings.
—And couldn't you ask them what their riddle is? You should be like a father to them—Adam said, somewhat unsatisfied with the response.
—Yes, I could, and you could also ask me how to revive again...—the old man replied with irony —You're right, they're like my children, but they are whimsical children who don't listen to me...
—And can't you give me some useful advice?!—Adam asked in desperation— I don't want to die without my father seeing me in my black robe. But it would be foolish of me to waste your healing lake and leave before reading the book.
The eyeless old man looked him up and down and then glanced at his magician's hat, saying with much pity:
—If the old magician gave you advice: use it, he's like your godfather, but he will guide you on the path of religion. Another option is that you can talk to the magical books: just place your hand on the magical book and ask, maybe it will tell you the truth, maybe it will make things more complicated for you. Almost all my books like heroes, so it should make things easier for you.
—Could you bring me the book? That way, I can try talking to it...—Adam said, somewhat impatient.
—Are you going to read three magical books in a day?—commented the eyeless old man— If you want good advice: rest and practice your new skills before trying to obtain the book's ability. Last time, you didn't even prepare your shadow; don't rush so much. Your father waited for 15 years, he can wait a few more days.
—I guess you're right, I'm rushing too much...—murmured Adam, but he wasn't entirely sure whether to wait or not.
In the end, Adam decided to relax a bit and read some books for fun that he had missed. Luckily, he bought extra coffee, thinking it was like hot chocolate, so he had reserves to get rid of the cave's mushroom taste.
After reading for a few hours, Adam decided to take a bath. He took off his black robes and dove naked into the lake, letting the magical water clean his entire body like a robe.
But immediately, Adam felt that there was something abnormal with his body: Something was missing! The young man patted himself to check that everything was in order. Then, in desperation, Adam swam to the shore of the lake, leaving the comfortable massage of the water.
As he approached the shore, Adam stood up and looked at his crotch with anguish.
—Nooooooo!!—Adam shouted as if one of his children had been stolen. Adam touched his crotch as if to check that it wasn't just an illusion, but indeed something was missing.
—That explains a lot of jokes...—the eyeless old man said, looking at Adam with pity but without empathy, not understanding very well why there was so much desperation —Think of the positive side: At least you don't have to go to the bathroom to pee anymore.
*Puff*...Adam fainted on the shore of the lake; it seemed that the loss was too significant for the mind of the young hero.
