After much reflection and meditation, Adam requested the four magical books mentioned by his godfather. In reality, the young man took quite a long time to decide, to the point that he spent an entire month in the cave pondering his future and what skills could make it easier. Undoubtedly, it was a heavy month for Adam, as he couldn't leave the cave since he couldn't re-enter it anymore.
However, the month of reflection didn't serve him much, as the young hero couldn't gather enough confidence to make such an important decision on his own, a decision that could change his life forever. So, in the end, Adam succumbed to the pressure of the moment and reluctantly accepted the list proposed by his godfather.
Throughout the month, Adam would always wake up at night feeling a terrible pinch in the thumb of his right hand. Fortunately, it only happened once per night, and with time, the young man got used to the interrupted sleep caused by the pinch, but the pain was still unbearable.
As time went on, the purging didn't seem to happen, and therefore Adam assumed that the eyeless old man had lied to him to ease the pressure of getting the black robe. In fact, the lie proved quite useful since, in the end, the young hero managed to take things more lightly and enjoy life a bit without focusing so much on studying the language, which ended up helping him quite a lot.
Currently, Adam was about to open and read his third magical book: 'The Lunatic'. This book had a wooden cover and was quite thick, with many pages inside.
Upon opening the book, the young man noticed there were at least 1000 pages with lines. Interestingly, all 1000 pages with lines seemed to be empty. Nevertheless, Adam slowly went through each blank page; he knew that the stories inside the book were important, and even a page with nothing written could hold some meaning to solve the riddle of this magical book.
When he reached page number 500, he had made it halfway through the book, but all the lines were still empty. As time passed, there were only a few pages left to finish reading the book, and by now, all the previous pages were still blank.
In the end, Adam reached the last page, page 1001 of the book. To his surprise, this page did have something written at the bottom. Specifically, on the last line. It was a very short sentence that said:
This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.
> 'How inconvenient, it seems I forgot to write the story.'
*Poof*...When the young man read that sentence in his mind, the book closed by itself with such force that, luckily, Adam had taken his fingers away, or he would have lost them.
The book didn't disappear; instead, it reopened to the last page, and Adam once again saw that the only thing written in the book was the short sentence: 'How inconvenient, it seems I forgot to write the story.' But there was a difference; the sentence was now on the second-to-last line! The sentence had moved up one line!
To make sure it was the same sentence, Adam read it in his mind again, and as he did, the book slammed shut and reopened. The young hero immediately noticed that the sentence had moved up another line.
Upon realizing this, Adam understood the problem and held his head while shouting in anger:
—But are you kidding me! I have to repeat this damn sentence over a million times!
The eyeless old man came out to see the boy complaining, and with a wicked smile on his face, he said:
—Yes, it's a marvelous book, a wizard gave it to me after I completed my first ascent as a magical bookshelf.
—More than a book, it's a torture tool!—Adam complained while counting the number of lines on each page.
—That's why they removed it from the gold and silver floors and gave it to me...—The eyeless old man said, feeling some remorse —Imagine wizards outside in the corridors, repeating the same phrase over and over like lunatics. And think about the suffering of the librarians who managed to learn this skill without knowing what they would get at the end of reading all the lines.
—Did you meet a wizard?—Adam asked, recalling what the eyeless old man had said. At first, he thought he misheard, but the old man had clearly repeated the word "wizard".
—I'm a magical bookshelf: Who else but me would meet wizards?—The eyeless old man asked mockingly at the question —But you're mistaken: we're not talking about the same kind of wizards.
—Are there more than one type of wizard?—Adam asked curiously. He still remembered that the path to becoming a wizard involved reading magical books, so he had always been curious about the subject, especially now that he had started reading his magical books.
—You'll find out soon enough, young man—The eyeless old man replied with a very happy smile on his face —For now, I wish you luck reading that book until you go lunatic.
After saying that, the eyeless old man hid in his wall. Adam looked at the thick book on his desk and held his head, massaging his forehead for quite some time. Then the young man went to make himself some coffee because this was going to take much longer than he had anticipated.
