038-The silent war

Another 5 months flew by, luckily nothing had happened. Apparently Adam had misunderstood the times of the old man without eyes and thought that the changes in the bookshelves on the school floor would be immediate. But it seems that the shelves measure time in a different way and the process was quite slow.

However, after 5 months, some slight changes might start to show on the shelves, from new books to mysterious mist. There were also bookshelves that were fighting to grow, their fights were quite slow and usually consisted of using the librarians to steal the books from the other shelf.

Any bookshelf without books was considered a loser, and the losing shelf would be destroyed by the winner. However, the fights between bookshelves were incredibly complex: from using alliances, book exchanges and even betrayals, everything could be seen.

But most fights ended in a non-aggression pact with favorable terms for the side most likely to win, so not many of the bookshelves were destroyed. However, there were not a few librarians who sought to motivate the conflict to obtain more benefits, so some fights ended with the two shelves destroyed, being devoured by the intelligent neutrals.

As the old man with no eyes had said: the time after an ascent was a chaos that developed at a snail's pace and grew with time. Librarians knew this phenomenon as the silent war, and it could last for years or decades, finally returning to another new balance of power.

What was absolute chaos for the librarians is that during this war, the bookshelves used to change their rules and conditions in order to get more out of the situation. But since there was the bad side, there was also the good side, there were new books and secrets to discover, and every day there were going to be more until the war stopped. This motivated all the librarians to go out and re-scan the floor every day.

But the eyeless old man hadn't been wrong about the greed among librarians: many incidents and thefts could be seen all over the floor. Luckily for Adam, there was a rule about not touching students or teachers put in place by the Baron; for which he was safe on this floor and classes could continue normally, despite the fact that outside chaos seemed to reign in many hexagons.

What Adam had yet to see were the strange creatures mentioned by the old eyeless man. But knowing that the eyeless old man was bold enough to start expanding between floors and create an alternate passageway; he must know more than anyone about these struggles.

So Adam always tried to go the bygone paths, the librarians wouldn't attack him, but the creatures might.

Today Adam was walking to school, it was a very special day, he had managed to reach the 40-page mark, and they were going to celebrate it in class with the teacher.
