The E Ranker’s feet blazed with light, and he shot off across the ground, anticipating an easy victory against the three newcomers. Lao snapped his fingers, and a band of blue light appeared before the other man. He impacted it with a curious twanging noise, as if bouncing off a rubber band. Blood ran down Lao’s nose as he maintained control over the force being channeled through his Dao construct. Then the band snapped back, and his enemy was catapulted into the air.
Jeffrey leveled his gun at the E Ranker and fired a bullet of condensed mana and conceptual Accuracy slicing through the air. So fast was it that its path was completely straight. It hammered into the other man’s neck, tearing straight through. Only the raw might of an E Ranker had prevented the man from dying instantly.
Talnor sliced down with his katana, the air splitting in half before it. Lightning burst out of the weapon, and the skies above began to darken. At his level of power, he could extend his elemental mastery to the world around him at a limited degree. As he became stronger and continued to follow the path of the storm, he would be able to create hurricanes and tornadoes with ease.
A wave of electricity rampaged across the sky, centering on the E Ranker still flying backwards. The man had a look of rage on his face, completely unfazed by the hole through his neck. It was already healing over at a visible rate. Before Talnor’s strike could connect, the E Ranker slammed his palms together. A shockwave raced out through space, tearing the wave of lightning apart. Then he snapped free of the influence of the force propelling him backwards, and flipped over.
With his head facing down, flares of energy erupted from the soles of his feet, sending him down like a meteor. Jeffrey squeezed off a few more bullets, but they simply caused superficial wounds on his target.
The E Ranker let out a roar of anger as the air around him shattered before his speed. A sonic boom rattled the windows of the nearby houses, and as his speed continued to increase, they broke into a thousand pieces.
Talnor leaped back, lightning sparking around his form. He was the fastest amongst them, and he quickly had cleared a few hundred feet of distance. The others weren’t far behind, but it was almost too late. Their foe impacted the concrete below like a meteor, and the ground rippled upwards. Streaks of Dao energy followed the cracks, but it was only from a first order Dao Seed.
The three captains wove together their own Daos, creating a net of conceptual power that prevented the E Ranker’s own from spreading. Had his attack been allowed to rampage unchecked, it would have destroyed the entire city.

As it was, a dome of multicolored light spread out around the impact zone, and a miasma of exotic energy crackled within. In between bolts of purple lightning and explosions of rampant power, the face of the glowering invader was revealed as he strode towards his enemies. Unfortunately, he was completely immune to the effects of his own attack.
He waved his hands, and the power condensed into a tiny marble of energy, hovering delicately before him. Its size belied its destructive potential, and the world around it began to warp.
Jeffrey grit his teeth. “Shit.”
“We have to hold the line,” Talnor added, straining to pump more of his Dao energy into the shield wall surrounding their enemy. “It falls to us to defend the city.”
“Where are the others?” Lao said. “If Eduardo and some of the other elites were here, this battle would be far easier.”
Before anyone could respond, the E Ranker thrust his hands forth and let his attack loose. The air screamed as concentrated Dao energy tore through it, and a shockwave coursed through the air behind, ruffling the man’s hair. Then it struck the shield and the ground buckled. The defenders were sent hurtling back as the sheer force of the Daos fighting sent a ripple through the air. All around, buildings shuddered and crumbled. Even if they won, this battle would be close.
Falaron Tyndor, third of his name, was one of the lowest of the low amongst the Enlightened Tier forces of his sect. Not even one of the named members of his faction, he had been sent to Earth to act as nothing more than what was essentially gilded cannon fodder. As an E Ranker, he should have been like a god of battle against those of a lower Rank, but he had been warned about this planet.
Before coming, his mind had been set on victory, knowing that the two premier defenders of the planet, Sam Atlas and the Overlord, were gone. Apparently, both of them had not only killed E Rankers while still at F Rank, but they had killed members of the Athari family themselves. He had no wish to fight such monsters, especially now that they had broken through. The only reason he was even here was because they were gone.
Now that he was here though, he found his resolve beginning to crumble. He was being matched by a paltry crew of Peak F-Rankers, ones he had never even heard of before. The only reason he was still unharmed was because the majority of their power had been used to shield their people and city, rather than strike him. His throat still twinged, even though it was healed. That should have been almost impossible for a mere F-Ranker to achieve.
Scanning them on a basic level merely revealed their names and levels, which meant nothing to him. When he channeled his Dao into it though, he was faced with a terrifying sight. One of them had a Legendary class, and multiple Mythical skills. For an F Ranker, that was beyond belief.
The other two were almost as potent, with one of them wielding an immense amount of power in the realm of the Dao, and the other filled with elemental power. Falaron’s heart sank. He was in deep trouble. His only hope was to continue to threaten the city, rather than his foes. That would allow him to stall until help came.
