Chapter 396

The tentacled monstrosity started to gather a massive ball of energy between its other tentacles, causing the air to hum. The energy was tinted with purple light, an energy form that Sam had not seen yet. Either it was some sort of rare elemental attunement, or a special form of mana. In any case, he was glad that it wasn’t directed at the city.

The Twilight Titan raised one arm, creating a massive shield around it. The monster planted its feet and prepared to receive the attack. As the whirling ball of energy grew to its full size, Sam could feel the hairs on his neck stand on end. The monster roared and loosed the attack a moment later. A spear of purple light exploded outwards, hammering into the Titan’s shield with a colossal bang. The energy rushed outwards and then imploded back on itself, creating a set of double explosions. The second one was even more powerful than the first. The first blast caused the Titan to stumble, and the second forced its shield out of the way.

With a sudden turn of speed, the Rift Beast surged forwards, enveloping the Titan with its tentacles. It was quite a bit smaller than the other monster, but it was clearly stronger relative to that size. Purple lightning crackled along its body as it attacked, and the Titan let out a bellow of rage. The Rift Beast started to squeeze, and the Titan groaned in pain, trying to push the monster off. Eventually, the Titan summoned a stiletto blade of darkness, and drove it into the main body of the Rift Beast, causing it to let go in surprise. The Titan quickly took the initiative, and grabbed the monster by one of its tentacles. With a roar of exertion, it gripped the main body of the Rift Beast and started to pull.

The wet squelch of ripping flesh serenaded the battlefield as the Titan tore the tentacle off of the Rift Beast. The creature let out a keening cry of pain and wriggled free. Although it was a more cohesive being and had greater destructive potential, its body was weaker, and it was a lot less intelligent. The Titan had a good shot at winning, but it would be heavily injured if it won.

The city defenders watched as the monsters duked it out, too afraid of angering them to attack. One E Rank monster was bad enough, but two would be a death sentence for the city.

The Rift Beast let out a screech of pure rage, and a dome of purple energy expanded outwards as it made its displeasure known. A sudden surge of energy erupted out from its missing limb, and an ethereal tentacle of purple light took its place. A sudden tear in the fabric of reality appeared in front of the monster, and it thrust two tentacles through it. Another rift appeared near the Titan’s head, and the tentacles flew down, wrapping around it. A blaze of purple light erupted into being, and the Titan staggered as its flesh was torn apart. It beat at its head with its hands, before summoning another weapon from the darkness that surrounded it.

A massive spear dropped into its hands, and the Titan thrust it through the rift, impaling the monster on the other side. Brackish blood spilled out onto the ground as the spear punched through the main body of the Rift Beast. Its tentacles went limp, and it began to fall. As its tentacles withdrew, it revealed the head of the Titan, which was eaten away by the purple energy, reduced to a nub of darkness. As the Titan let out a roar of victory, the Rift Beast revealed its final ability.

A circular portal appeared in front of it, and a sudden pulse of power ripped through the world. A presence dropped down upon the world like a lead weight as something gazed through the portal. Although none of the defenders could see it, they could see its effects. A cone of devastation rippled outwards from the portal, simply evaporating everything in its way. The Titan was caught in its path, and it let out a cry of pain as its body was blasted away from its core. A blinding pulse of light followed the devastation, and then the portal faded away, revealing the corpse of the Rift Beast lying behind it. The Twilight Titan lay on the ground, its body reduced by almost three quarters. However, it was still alive.

As the monster began to rise, Sam leaped over the walls, screaming out a war cry as he went. His aura billowed out, inspiring the other soldiers, and as he landed, hundreds landed beside him. He charged towards the Titan, starting to pump his power into his weapon. The head of his hammer blazed like a star, and as he neared, he leaped into the air, teleporting the rest of the way. Even in its reduced state, the Titan was huge.

Sam reached its greatly diminished head a few seconds later, and dropped out of the sky, driving his hammer down into the monster’s face as he did so. As he made contact, the tip of the hammer exploded with power, sending a ripple of destruction down into the monster’s head. Behind him, the other fighters laid into its limbs, rendering it unable to rise. Sam raised his hammer once more, and stared into the hate filled eyes of the Titan. Then he simply brought it down, and evaporated the last traces of resistance that the monster had. With a shudder, the shadowy body of the Titan disappeared, leaving only its shattered core behind. Essence poured into Sam, but it was a lot less than he could have received. The presence of the Rift Beast had cut the essence rewards significantly.
